Title: Best Way to City?
Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, April 21, 2006, 10:33:24
Never been to Ashton Gate before so I'm definately goin to the game, but can't decide whether to get the train or drive.

I've heard parking is crap so driving seems a bad idea, but then the train station is a 45 minute walk from the ground.

Anyone who's been before thats got suggestions?

Station is miles away but allows drinking.  Leave it late enough and everyone seems to make up car parks from memory.  I seem to remember parking on the slip road from the dual carriageway approaching the ground one year.

Its a long walk from the station especially at Plods pace.

Get there before the escort and you could do it in 25 minutes I reckon.

And what time do the 5-O normally turn up?

Whenever the "lads" do, it would seem.

That said I've avoided the escort before despite being on the same train as the lads as I dont dress in stone island etc :D

dead easy to drive, last time i went my old man drove. was quite easy to park and that was when we took quite a lot during the playoff season, though i don't remember where we parked - it was quite near the ground though. somehow we even managed to get a drink and a bacon sarnie in a city pub.

unless you fancy getting messed around by the police and possibly missing half the game, avoid the train.

There's plenty of off and on street parking for free if you get there before 2pm.  It's easy peasy to find, just follow all the other chavs from City!!

If I get stuck in a stupid escort again I may well jump in the river and swim, that took the complete piss that year

If I go I'll be coming from the other way so good chance I can miss the escort. although that will probably mean I'll get lost. Meh, I probably  wont go anyway.

8)  An interesting fact for you about trashton gate. Do you remember the christmas only fools and horses episode where they accidently bring an illegal immigrant back from france aka 'gary' ? .... well the bit where they are at that car boot sale in the car park was actually filmed in the car park outside trashton gate.

Am I missing something here? What is all this talk about the train at 8.30am????

I just looked and there is a train at 1.30 which I am relying on. Unless I'm being REALLY thick.......

Oh and is anybody walking from the ground to the train station right after the game? Because I'm gonna be lonely and bricking it otherwise

Leave the M5 at Junction 18, travel along the Portway (A4) following signs for the Bristol Airport/Taunton (A38). Over the swing bridge (Brunel Way), branching left into Winterstoke Road, and you will see the ground on your left. Parking at the ground is for permit holders only, so it is a case of finding some street parking.

For a map showing the location of Ashton Gate click here (to take you to the Street Map website).

To go to a simplified page, containing the directions and pub info, which you can print out click here.

The nearest railway station is Parson Street which is around a ten minute walk away from the ground. However few trains stop at this station so you are more likely to end up at  Bristol Temple Meads mainline station instead. This station is at least two miles from the ground and hence too far to walk, so best to jump in a taxi (around £6). Neil Le Milliere a visiting Exeter City supporter adds '"don't try and walk it from the station unless you really have to and then allow at least 3/4s of an hour for the journey". Chris Davis says; 'there are buses which leave from behind the Atyeo Stand at the end of the game which go to the centre of Bristol and Temple Meads Station at a cost of £1. Although predominantly for home fans, away fans could also use them'.

I think that it would be quicker to go down the M32 and go through broadmead to get there... provided you don't get lost

As someone who works in Bristol everyday, M32 is the best route but jsut be careful of the roadworks in the centre...

Its walkable distance to corn street (where all the pubs are). Come out the train station turn right. Its all signposted from there. Walk it in quarter of an hour.

But if I am going to get there at 2.15 I will have to head straight for the ground which is 2 miles away, which I reckon would take about half an hour
