Title: Hoddle set to leave Wolves in the summer?
Post by: Dazzza on Thursday, April 6, 2006, 11:51:27
Couple of today’s scandal rags have reported he’s not set or a new contract and will depart in the summer.

A bit harsh IMO as he’s slowly turned them round and has got them sniffing the arse of the playoffs like a Jack Russell.

I’ll ask the inevitable, should he, could he ever come back?

Got to admit although his stock has dropped I can’t see him being to short of offers and I’d wager a Championship or lower Prem side will soon snap him up.

If Hoddle came back he'd take us back to the premiership in no time. Legend.

Hoddle is a great manager, he got us there last time and has had success at loads of clubs including I would say Wolves. They would be foolish to not offer him another contract but if they don't they'll be plenty of clubs after him and with his wages we wouldn't have a chance anyway but he is definitely a Swindon legend.

DMR in generally agreeing with BWB shocker. Shame he was a complete tool for England.

The big question I always ask is would we have gone up if Hoddle was just a manager, because at the time he was still a class above on the pitch. On the occasions he didn't play we did still do ok i.e. Newcastle at home, though I doubt if he didn't play there would have been games where we wouldn't have picked up anything.

i love the bloke and think he's an absolute legend but there's no way he'd get us back to the premiership now, not with the club in the state that it is.

i doubt we'll ever play at the top level again and we'll only ever briefly flirt with division one status.

I think he could turn a few things around but the Premiership is a long way away. Survival in League One is the first stage, and then looking towards the championship but realistically the next 5 years will be no higher than that

Don't be so pessimistic. This is just a minor blip. We may not be back for a few years but a great club like this one will one day be challenging for the top flight once again even if it's not for some years.

Hoddle is not likely to be the man to do it though but it would be great, similar to how Redknapp has been revitalising Portsmouth, most of them weren't too happy about him coming back but they're coming around to it now.

We need a manager who can retain our league status next season, which is going to be an exceedingly difficult task....its not a job for a Hoddle.

Might as well stick with Iffy, he wants to prove himself, which is probably a good starting point.

We are currently signing up some of the players who have performed so poorly on a consistent basis this season....and little prospect of new blood outside of the usual flood of loans and maybe the odd kid playing some games.

I'd like to think Paul Smith could get fit and sign up for a year, but at his age the type of injury he has can be what causes retirement.

No, I believe it. We went right back down to division 4 back in the early 80's and then shot straight back up through the leagues, it's not easy but if you get on a roll it's possible, teams like Southend who were at the bottom of division 3/league 2 for years now look like getting successive promotions. If we go down this year, as long as we can survive on the financial tightrope then there's no reason why we can't come back up and then go up again at some point even if it's not for 10 years or more.

Invariably you do need a big name manager to do that. If you look at all out success in the past 20 years we've had a name that attracts players. Macari, Ardiles, Hoddle, McMahon, Todd, Evans all big names in football. Onuora sadly is not.

I think Reg has a valid point with regards to Iffy wanting to prove himself and I think he can do it.

Iffy has had poor circumstances to take over this club this season.  Andy King leaving during the season was the main factor but considering King did not motivate the team, Iffy had not only to remotivate players but also bring in new players on virtually no budget.  Players didn't get paid, stadium plans dissolved, not much has really gone right for him.  If he is able to keep us up this season then he IMO is more than worthy of managing this club next season.

I also would keep Iffy. Can't see anyone else turning it around, though if somehow we could attract a big name player manager i think it would be worth considering.

What attracts players is a fat wage packet...very little to do with the name negotiating it.

Back in the day we were known as a club that paid high wages....we're now known as a club that pays (not always on time) low wages.

Perhaps, but a named manager raises the profile of the club immediately. For example Ardiles and the likes of Lorenzo, of course there is the argentine connection but just the name of Ardiles was a plus in attracting better players.

Sorry, what exactly did Todd and/or Evans do for this club?

Not saying those two in particular did, just saying they were big names in football. Evans brought along Ruddock with him and was promised bigger things, however they never had enough time here anyway.

Though with the main 4 who did achieve some success they were all names in football.

the only reason Hoddle did so well as a manager here was because he was still an awesome player and one of the most talented players to ever grace the Swindon shirt....

No, that's just one of the reasons why he did so well. He also signed quality players like Taylor and Moncur - that has nothing to do with being a player and everything to do with being a manager.

Must've done. Hoddle was a succesful England manager and this when the team didn't have half as many world class players as we do now, if it wasn't for Beckham's stupidity we could have done very well at the 98 world cup.

He did well at Chelsea, signing players like Ruud Gullit and reaching the fa cup final and very well at Southampton.

He was sacked much too early into the season at Spurs where he didn't have a lot of money to spend which was a shame but helped build the basis of what is now proving to be a great side by signing players like Robbie Keane.

I'm in the strange position of agreeing with BWB and disagreeing with him at the same time.

He's right Hoddle is a fine coach. Some of that was fucked up by his slightly wacky personal philosophy of life, but anyone that thinks he was shit as England manager might want to go back and look at his record in competitive fixtures.

Venables team might have looked more creative at times but they had the advantage of having Gascoigne when he wasn't a basket case. Hoddle had nobody to replace him as there was a complete dearth of players that could both pass and dribble. (Imagine what he could have done with a squad that included Rooney and Joe Cole.)

However, as far as him coming here is concerned:

1. There's not a fucking prayer of it happening is there
2. I'm not sure how well he'd do at this level, or a rung down. When he was here before he inherited a squad that Ardiles had built on good footballing principles. (It was thinned out a good bit by the enforced sales after the relagation farce but Hod was given the resources to fill in the gaps.)

Final thing - I can't believe those of you that are STILL antagonistic towards him because he committed the crime of leaving for another club. It was what 15 years ago. Get over it. If you carry a grudge for that long, then at a club like ours you're going to spend virtually every game screaming at someone on the opposition side and you'll end up like that dribbling loon that used to hang about in the Townend.

I've no doubt that there is basically no chance at all that he'd ever come back that's true, if by some miracle he did though I'd certainly be more than happy to welcome him back.

It was meant a bit tongue-in-cheek when i said he'd definitely take us back to the premiership, because that would be an incredibly difficult task, I do think he would be very succesful in this division though and I don't think promotion to the championship would be too unrealistic. It's all hypothetical though of course.

1) I like Glenn Hoddle. He did the business with us... So, he didn't stay. So what! He went on to better things. Colin Calderwood didn't stay when we would have been better with him at the back in the Prem. We love him still though! (granted years more commitment)

2) I doubt there is anybody who could turn us around with the current state of the club.

I fucking love Glenn Hoddle and would welcome him back with open arms.  The man is a genius, and I will be eternally thankful for his time at our club.  The memories of those seasons he was in charge will live with me until the day I go senile in a old folks home, even then I hope I'll go on about Glenn, Colin, Martin Ling, Micky Hazard, Fraser Digby etc, as my bemused reletives crowd around me.
