Post by: DMR on Thursday, March 23, 2006, 14:11:31
anyone been made better or worse off then?

as far as i'm concerned the inevitable raise on beer and cigarettes is always to be expected, but good on gordy for cutting road tax for us considerate drivers and whacking it up on the remarkably annoying SUV morons with their poncy public school attiudes

Not a great budget.  More Inheritance tax problems for the population, not that it affects me (other than at work) but it might one day.  Also bad news for people who are loaning computers from work with a view to by as there's a 20% tax on the value of the machine now.

The tax on 4 by 4's has pissed me off a little as I personally think the agricultural workers have it quite tough anyway.

I'm pleased to see that you childless tee-totallers out there will be stung yet further to subsidise my drinking and child-rearing. Thanks!

I think people should be more concerned about where all the extra money Brown has promised is going to come from (sale of assets/debts etc.)

Indirectly IHT, the threshold has gone up by £10,000, by the average house will go up by more than this over the next year, also ways of getting around IHT has been hinded by Brown's trust tax changes.

oooh good call  :)

but an extra company mobile phone for a family member who isn't a company employee is not really something that affects very many people and in fact is just closing a little loophole that was being exploited

Well it can't be tax on your loan pc from work, cos I mentioned that, how about the reduction in tax break if you invest in Venture Capital Trusts???  From 40% to 30%??

The temporary increase 2004 to 2006 to encourage investment was 40% and that was due to be reduced back to to 20% in April 2006 (as it was originally), however this has been increased to 30% relief.

i could list all the reductions in taxes and amendments to EIS limits etc but I can't be arsed  :P

Come on you cannot call that an increase in relief, although they may have planned to have cut it to 20% but then decided to increase it to 30%.

He should have announced that income tax would go up to 50% for higher rate payers then next year when he decides not ot increase it, he could state he's cut income tax by 10% and left it at 40%.  Political bollocks.

it was never going to be cut - its always been 20% relief increased to 40% for 2 years on a temporary basis

rather than letting the rate of relief go back down to its normal level, an interim relief of 30% (ie 20% + 10%) has been introduced

most venture capitalists are thrilled to bits its not gone back to 20% as they werent expecting an extra 10% relief from April  :)

Did I mention the limit for EIS relief has increased?

Good morning budget watchers.

I didn't realise that the 40% relief rate was only a temporary one, thanks for that.

I have now noticed that Landfill tax has gone up.

I've gotta say this budget's been a pain in the arse for us lot, our entire investment IFA 's are shitting themselves!

Landfill Tax has been on a rising scale for a few years now. This is one of the reasons your council tax goes up.

Recycle more though and your council pays less landfill tax, simple.

We pay the council to do that why should we sort stuff out into seperate boxes/containers etc?.

Landfill tax is going to go up every year until 2010 where it will be £35 per tonne (if the government stick to the plan). Cost of compliance is also an issue so it costs even more than this to comply to the landfill tax.

True, although I'm sure we could all do a little more. It's your money after all.

Landfill tax is used to increase the cost of waste disposal so other means of treatment and diversion become relatively cost effective.

The fact is though that we don't spend nearly enough on recycling. I think the germans pay three times as much as we do.

I thought the council are just paid to collect and dispose of our stuff, not sort it as well? When you go to the dump you put things in seperate skips don't you? Where's the difference with household rubbish?

We now have 3 bins (Mendip council). A brown one for all food and compostable stuff, a black one for recycleable that wont compost (glass etc) and then a normal bin for other stuff that doesn't fit the other 2 categories.

A little birdie tells me that our own Swindon Council pay for Kosovans, etc to get taxi's to and fro (job interviews, etc), mobile phones and also suitable clothes for job interviews!

This conversation started when he said that someone he knows had to sell his car to pay for a private operation for his mother, because the NHS waiting list was huge. 3 Kosovans came round with a cheque for the car from Swindon Borough Council. He obviously queried this with the council and they confirmed this was the case, and they agreed to buy them the car as it worked out cheaper than to keep paying for their taxi's everywhere.

To be fair, I am not 100% sure if this is truthful, or even accurate (it is only what I've been told, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Has anyone else heard similar stories?

Stop the world, I wanna get off.

Yeah, I heard that the council have employed hit squads to terrorise pensioners out of their homes so they can move baby raping foreigners in.They then force feed the pensioners with corn to such an extent that their livers treble in size. Then they make a pate out of the livers and feed it to johnny foreigner as a delicacy called pate de fois gran.

Is this what we pay our taxes for! :x
