I gave up for two years, then started again three years ago.

I've got more important things to sort out before smoking.

It's the whole ritual that I love and there’s something filthy about a bit of tasty flange having a smoke.

I knocked it on the head midweek aside from the odd crafty one or two out of boredom.  The stench on clothes is the worst thing I don’t mind if I’m out on the beers but during the day you can smell a smoker a mile off.

If Dublin is anything to go by when this outdoor smoking malarkey kicks off it’ll be fantastic.  Prime killing fields for fanny and getting outside for perhaps not the best description here but a breather from a sweaty club is fantastic.

I quit over a year ago and went tee total up until the last few months...now I just have a couple when I actually go out and have a drink so I probably have about 5-10 a month often a lot less.

If people want to smoke fine, if people don't then fine. Down to the individual......no need to get put down by others, as you said Arriba you've had your imperfections in your time.

I gave up for 3 months earlier in the year, then I started again just to piss off non-smokers.  The only thing that's ever really bothered me is the cost, and I can afford it fine so I smoke.  People always say how it's a painful death but funnily I've never thought dieing was going to be nice.

During that three months I also gave updrink and drugs for 3 weeks, and fuck me did I feel strange

Well fair play & respect to you.

Smoking however, is something associated with footballing culture and unless a national ban is implemented it will be here to stay.

I smoke on and off pretty constantly. rarely during the day though, normally in the evening. The only thing that pisses me off about non-smokers - especially the ones that used to smoke and have successfully quit, is that they always presume you're trying to give up and even when you point out that you're not really and are quite happy smoking, there seems to be a presumption it's because you can't stop.

Drinking makes people violent and is the cause of so many social/pyshical/mental ills it's unreal.  Alright it's not directly comparible, but it is the equivilent in some ways of saying you wish people wouldn't drink around you.

And besides, for all that's said about passive smoking how many people do you hear of contracting lung cancer who've never smoked(apart from Roy Castle but he way taking in huge gulps of air in smoke filled rooms)?  It may be thousands, yet it seems to me you'd hear alot more about it if it was prevalant.

i cannot argue with any of your post.but would like to say that having smoke blown in the vacinity of someone could be found to be uncomfortable.that could be one ciggerette.would one pint of lager consumed cause such discomfort to a third party?

whenever the person in question is driving, i'd guess.

i still smoke, i've gone back to marlboro dykes as dunhills are only cheap in tesco and there's no tesco near me.

i got through about 2/3rds of a 20 pack on tuesday night, i chainsmoked like fuck in the second half.

i don't give a toss if people don't like me smoking, they can always move elsewhere.

arriba, it's great that you've got such strong opinions on every subject under the sun but do you really need to give us them at every available opportunity and insult everyone in the process? just a polite request, like.

No, and I understand that point which is why I said they're not directly comparible.  The issue here is whether the probable majority of people have the right to tell others what they should do because it annoys them.  IMHO the CG should have smoking sections so that people have choice, which is a fundamental tenet of society, rather than having everything you do dictated to you.

the county ground does have non-smoking sections. one in the nationwide and one in the town end.

therefore, if you sit in a non-smoking area and get cancer from somebody sat in a five metre radius of you, then it's your fault.

I flick a fag out of a car window once that came back in and landed in my friends hood, only I was too drunk to bother to tell him.  He fell asleep later in all his clothes and then found the hole and the butt in the morning and thought he'd fallen asleep smoking.   I didn't bother to tell him the truth.

As an ex smoker I find people that smoke really stink and I think shit, I must've smelt like that! People smoking doesn't bother me, most of my mates still smoke as well as the regulars in my local.

Giving up is easy enough though, as long as you are ready to give up! That is the key, if you ain't ready, it ain't gonna happen.

here goes, expecting a good lashing after this post.

Smoking v Drinking is not comparable, not in the slightest.

All the negative effects of drinking are against the law.  If i punch someone because I've drunk too much I can be charged with GBH.  If I smoke and puff it in someones face I am not breaking the law.  Therefore, drinking is not even in the same league.

I have never even put a cigarette into my mouth, and never wish to.  The things stink to high heaven, apart from being pretty damned bad for you.

I don't mind people smoking though, it's their choice, but I am of the opinion that most confined spaces should be covered by a ban - basically anywhere enclosed, and possibly (still undecided I think) parts of football grounds where seating is in place - because you technically can't chose to move, unless they allowed unrestricted seating.

On the passive smoking argument, that's just another one like the old days where people originally refused to accept smoking was a major cause of lung cancer.  It's near impossible to make a direct causal link between passive smoking and a death, it is possible to link increased exposure to high death rates for certain illnesses.

For football, I'm happy for smpoking to continue as it happens, because it is somehow a part of the feeling of being at football, although I'd make a song and a dance about an ignorant fool just blowing it in my face.

Take aim.....

nearly everyone seems to have strong opinions on everything.my comments were not meant to be insulting.if anyone has taken offence then i apologise.by calling smokers idiots ect was just my opinion, i say it to my mates and family all the time.its not meant in an insulting way at all.nor do i think i am better than smokers cause i've given up.

I must stop reading this thread. The more I read it, the more I want a fag!
It's like a sore tooth, I can't stop touching it.
Which, by the way, I also have and I am having root canal on Wednesday which is gonna set me back £170.00 :(

I am so fucking grumpy at the moment it's not funny.

The only thing that pisses me off about non-smokers - especially the ones that used to smoke and have successfully quit, is that they always presume you're trying to give up and even when you point out that you're not really and are quite happy smoking, there seems to be a presumption it's because you can't stop.

Good point, I don't wanna give up, has rarely crossed my mind, apart from when my old man started smoking again.

He was 60 aday and gave up for 10 years, and recently started again. I felt that he started again because i smoked, so was gonna give up to help him, but frankly, he couldn't give a shit.

On a side note, although still related, passive smoking is clearly bad for you, as is taking in any toxins. However, it has often been stated that living in a built up city will cause similar levels of toxins to be deposited in your lungs, as a full time smoker, which are just as likely to cause lung cancer.

In conclusion, what these studies state, is the government fuelled media likes to tell you how harmful smoking is, yet fail to state that you are just as likely to die of lung cancer by living in London.

In the same way, they like to tell you smokers cost the NHS some £100m a year. What they conveniently forget is that smoking earns the goverment the fat side of £9billion a year in tax.

You should all want us to smoke and be pleased we do. If we all stop smoking, your tax will go up to fill the massive void left by smoking related tax, or the best part of £9billion.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it people.

I'm not bothered by people smoking in pubs. Wouldn't take up smoking again myself though, and I haven't smoked anything (not talking ciggies here) for a while.

Losing the old man to lung cancer was a bit of an eye opener so now I've moved out of a house of stoners think I'll curb the smoking to the odd one at social gatherings, if the opportunity arises.

I'm meaning the stuff that causes you harm as opposed to the stuff that causes you an inconvenience.

Smoking makes you smell a bit, but so does not using deodorantm and drinking makes you wiff as well - so yes, those are all the same.  but the stuff that cuases physical injury to others from drink is not allowed, well not as far as I know.

i found it fairly easy to quit and smoked 20 b+h a day for years.i cut down to just smoking when in the pub then cut it out completely.the only time i get the urge for a ciggy now is with a pint but that is fading all the time.
my dad on the other hand really struggled to quit and found it hard going.he managed it eventually.
if someone really wants to give up they can with will power, without it you have no chance.

also there will always be people that want to smoke and have no intention of quitting.as long as it doesn't get blown over me then let them carry on.

but i believed people go to pubs so socialise.
i don't smoke, (when i drive to STFC) i don't drink yet i still meet you guys in the merlin for a chat pre game.

and so do i...

but as i live in the middle of nowhere and i have to travel to see any of my mates, i can't be arsed driving into oxford just to sit in a pub where i can't really do anything if i've spent most of my week socialising with them anyway.

so that means less money going to pubs, i won't buy drinks for myself and others, i'm less likely to go to a pub to eat and so on and so forth.

Have you ever thought about taking up religion SY?

no.

Never understood menthols, or lights or silvers or any of that guff.  Seems to me that by smoking you make an unhealthy choice. To then try to pass off some fags as a healthy option seems contradictory.  Its the same as going in to MacDonalds, ordering a supersize meal with an extra cheeseburger, and then ordering a diet coke.

For me, I like to get as much nicotine in my body for the money I spend.  Hence, Embassy no. 1 all the way.

I have given up for almost 4 weeks now.
Use the patches, they really do help.

Go see your doc, get them on prescription, £6.65 for two weeks worth instead of £30+.

Ralphy, hows the quitting going?  I'm over a week now, but don't really feel that much better.  I seem to be drinking more to ease the pain, but its not really helping.  My last one was last thursday night, at five to midnight.

Do you really want to quit though lads?

I couldn't because I don't want to give up my social habit.  Knocked mid-week on the head years ago cold turkey, which without sounding like a twat was pretty damn easy but I couldn’t knock the weekend social on the head for love nor money.

You get that smoooooth hit and gentle high with the cold cool refreshing taste of a cold one.   Plus it’s the ritual, the sub-rounds that chase the drinks, the infantile lighter thieving from one another and the opportunity to break the ice with smoking fadge.

Not everyones cup of tea but a hot woman smoking just makes the appeal that little more.

There is nothing to 'give up' !

Ms Bird: You don't 'need' to inhale poisonous fumes that are slowly killing you.

Patches are a waste of time: They prolong the retention of nicotine in your system and drag out the unpleasentness of stopping smoking.

Not smoking during the week but smoking at the weekend - You are still  addicted to a drug that is killing you.

To be honest, I don't care if you all die a horrible slow and painful death. I was sucked into the smoking thing on and off from 14-38 and I've probably done myself some irreversable damage. However, I am now doing my best to prevent my kids from losing their father before they get to my age ! I can't change the past but I can help shape the future.

Any of you other quitters put on weight?
I've probably gained over half a stone since I quit smoking. So I am on a diet now.

I need to weigh up my options. I can give up smoking, be a bit healthier for a while, carry on putting on weight and eventually die of heart failure, or I can start smoking again.
But I don't really wanna start smoking again as i've done alright so far.
