Title: Anonymity Post by: singingiiiffy on Sunday, March 14, 2021, 18:50:20 The latest petition ready to hit parliament will discuss whether ID verification should be enforced for twitter etc.
Would you be in favour of this? Title: Re: Anonymity Post by: JBZ on Sunday, March 14, 2021, 18:52:50 Don't do Twitter and the like
Title: Re: Anonymity Post by: Flashheart on Sunday, March 14, 2021, 19:02:48 No.
Social media is often used by whistleblowers and people organizing protests etc. I agree that something needs to be done, but not this. I guess that would be the last of fast football goal uploads. As a compromise what if your account name could be anything you want but privacy laws meant that police could only use your registration details if you committed a crime. A kind of anonymity from joe public. Would be open to abuse however and Flashheart those are reasons i haven't though of. There will be quite a list of pros and cons on this one Title: Re: Anonymity Post by: JBZ on Sunday, March 14, 2021, 19:34:18 I agree that something has to be done to stop the abuse suffered by many on social media. Of course, that won't do anything about the fact that the alarming views that are so openly voiced will still be held and won't go away any time soon.
Title: Re: Anonymity Post by: Audrey on Monday, March 15, 2021, 05:55:09 No avatars on the forum. Should be proper pics of the posters.
If poss there should be a Like/Dislike button for posts instead of the ignore button. Even my esteemed ignore buddy JBZ makes the (very) occasional readable post! Title: Re: Anonymity Post by: RedRag on Monday, March 15, 2021, 10:31:36 Interesting question but anonymity of posting will never happen due to the sheer scale of internet participation. Outside of a totalitarian, China-style set up.
For better or worse, actually better AND worse, anonymity when posting is a good conduit for the free expression of ideas. Deniable and anonymous briefings to the Media, such as a Palace Insider or a source close to XYZ annoy me too because they carry influence free of any strings of accountability. Where prima facie criminal behaviour arises however, it seems quite reasonable for account details to be released to police, even if sheer volume probably means this has to be limited to more serious cases. This I favour id verification for sign ups. Title: Re: Anonymity Post by: RedRag on Monday, March 15, 2021, 10:41:42 Don't do Twitter and the like Agreed.I come across quite high instances of family feuds arising through facebook. Where no posting anonymity. Once you post something, it stays posted and tends to be seen by a very influential circle of friends, acquaintances and professional connections. Unlike a little secretive gossip, bitching or slagging off. It is often satisfying to vebalise and write out your righteous ire. The rule of not circulating it till you re-read and review it 24 hours later can make a lot of sense however. Title: Re: Anonymity Post by: Arriba on Monday, March 15, 2021, 11:30:10 No avatars on the forum. Should be proper pics of the posters. Don't see why anyone should have to provide their own photo but wouldn't really bother me if that were the case.If poss there should be a Like/Dislike button for posts instead of the ignore button. Even my esteemed ignore buddy JBZ makes the (very) occasional readable post! The like/dislike button just became a tool for hitting like or dislike regardless of the post made due to peoples like/dislike of that individual. Title: Re: Anonymity Post by: JBZ on Monday, March 15, 2021, 19:24:15 The like/dislike button just became a tool for hitting like or dislike regardless of the post made due to peoples like/dislike of that individual. I recall that one poster had a particular dislike of the old karma system. Just having a like button potentially gets round this although there may be subsequent gripes about not having enough likes. Title: Re: Anonymity Post by: flammableBen on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, 13:25:06 I think that if you are using a platform to unfairly attack people or spread and encourage harmful behaviour there should be consequences. Like today's Julie Birchill apology.
