Title: Leyton Orient v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Friday, October 3, 2014, 23:02:11
The Opponent:   Leyton Orient

Once again we are back on the road, this time with a trip to NE London. Recent away form has been beyond encouraging and I can’t see any reason why we can’t carry that form in today. The loss of Jon Obika is a blow, there is no doubt about that, but both Andy Williams and Michael Smith have looked sharp and have scored goals, it could be worse (Dossevi and Pericard).

In October 2011, Leyton Orient submitted a request to the Football League to move into and become tenants of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium, following complaints over West Ham United being given ownership over the stadium. Orient claimed that the stadium was too close to their stadium, which they claimed would breach FA rules, and by extension, move the club into bankruptcy. There has also been talk of the club moving into the 15,000 seater Riverbank Arena post-Olympics. Interestingly, Orient's crest is made up of two wyverns facing each other over a football. The wyvern symbol was introduced in 1976 and is believed to incorporate Orient's links with the City of London (the wyvern is the symbol of the Thames, it is believed to be the defender of the Thames) and with the sea, through the old Orient Shipping Company. The wyvern on the badge provided the inspiration for the club mascot Theo who got his name from a shortening of the club nickname, The O's.

Leytonstone has its fair share of notable folk including film director Alfred Hitchcock, photographer David Bailey, PR machine David Beckham, Cook Fanny Cradock, former England and Essex cricket captain Graham Gooch, footballers Justin and Gavin Hoyte, Colin Kazim-Richards, actor Sir Derek Jacobi, broadcaster and comedian Tony Robinson, general twat Jonathan Ross and his no mark brother Paul and Blue Peter’s Julie Sarpong.

Last Time Out –  Leyton Orient 2 Rochdale 3 Att  4405 - Two goals from Matty Done helped 10-man Rochdale to a 3-2 win at managerless Leyton Orient. Done struck first on four minutes from 20 yards before Jobi McAnuff's fierce volley levelled the scores. Dale defender Ashley Eastham saw red for bringing down Chris Dagnall but the striker's penalty was saved. Romain Vincelot's header gave the O's the lead before Peter Vincenti equalised and Done then stole it for the high-flying visitors on the break.
Starting XI –  Woods, Omuzusi, Baudry, Lowry, Jug Ear Cuthbert, McAnuff (Mooney 70), Cox, James (Pritchard 26), Vincelot, Henderson (Batt 67), Dagnall. Leyton Orient currently sit 19th on 10 points from 9 games.

They have served us both –  Adrian Whitbread, Teddy Ware, John Smith, Alex Revell, George O’Hanlon, Stan Morgan, Martin Ling, Pat Kanyuka, Tom Wells, Jonathan Tehoue, Billy Reynolds, Dave Partridge, Harry Morris, Craig Maskell, Richard Key, Percy Whipp, Norman Thomson, Alex Smith, David Peach, Tom Newton, Alan McCormack, Jimmy Lee, Billy Batty, Wayne Carlisle, Mark Cooper, Jamie Cureton, Jackie Dryden, Craig Easton, Steve Finney, John Gorman, Calvin Andrew, John Baynham, Glenn Cockerill, John Cornwell, Scott Cuthbert, Daren Dykes, Rhys Evans, Fred Fisher, Nigel Gray, Arthur Barraclough, Gary Alexander, Jack Brinton, Ralph Codling, Ian Culverhouse, Kevin Dearden, Stan Earl, Neale Fenn, Andy Frampton, Wayne Gray

One From The Past –  Saturday December 11th 1971 – Orient 0 Swindon Town 1 Back in the day of Football League Division 2, we travelled to Leytonstone and picked up the 3 points courtesy of an Arthur Horsfield goal. Some great names in the team that day including Rogers, Downsborough, Trollope, Mackay and Thomas. I’d take the same result today.

The Odds –  Leyton Orient 7/5  Draw 21/10  Swindon 21/10

The Son Says – .High on confidence with recent performances he has gone for a 2-0 Town win.

The Prediction – I went to Orient a few years back, dire 0-0 if I remember rightly, freezing cold and the grotty steak pie at the ground poisoned me. 2-1 Win, goals from Smith and Luongo, 4,878 with 688 from Swindon.

And Finally – Orient's golden years were in the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1961/62 season Orient were promoted to the top tier of English football, the First Division, now the FA Premier League, for the only time in their history, after finishing second in Division Two under the management of Johnny Carey. The team struggled in the top flight and were relegated from the top division the following season. Nonetheless, they did defeat local rivals West Ham United at home.

688 from Swindon is pretty conservative. I thought we'd sold more than that a few days ago?

That's about what Oxford took to Luton for their big "grudge match"
(on their website people say it's more dangerous than going to Swindon)

So pretty good turnout I'd say

Quality write up SR.

In many ways you have to admire the 3-4000 who turn up regularly to watch Orient, and it's good to see them unusually in a position to push on to massiveness. Despite a slow start, as pre-favourites to win the league, I think tomorrow will be a defining moment in their history

Considering we've pre-sold 904 tickets (on the official twitter) and they've had to release the away end to a pay on the gate deal I'd say we're looking at 1,100 away fans being there at least.

Buzzing for this. Had a night out with work mates, just got in, off to bed now, I'll see you chaps tomorrow! Got a drive to Frome in the old Mini in the morning, then a swap over to my mate's proper car suitable for a long trip to London followed by hopefully a quality game of footy.

Really excited for it and I'm very confident in a town win. 3-1.

Cheers for the top intro. Tough battle in the rain today. O's 1-1 Town. About time for another dubious penalty.

It would be a real shame if Orient suffered because of the Olympic Stadium situation. It is one of those clubs I've nothing against and feels like significant part of a town within a big city community. Still never seen us win there, or even score.

For all those going, enjoy your day in The Smoke.

Feeling confident which is a rare thing when we play away - surprised Orient are down there can`t believe they won`t improve - its ours to loose and I don`t think we will at least 0-2.....

Orient should be doing better than they are, but that just means we've got a bloody good chance at the 3 points today, particularly if we continue to play such brilliant football as we have been.

To those going, I expect to hear ole's over the radio when we dominate posession. I was planning to be there but my fucking boss called in sick so guess who has to cover  >:(

3-1 Town, Williams Smith and Byrne. Orient's will probably come from a penalty.

Nice write up as usual SR, even got me missing East London a bit...

Wasn't it the 1967 film 'Robbery' based on the Great Train Robbery that had the cast meeting on the terraces at an Orient v Swindon match and you could see glimpses of the game in the background?

We have only beaten them 4-0 once, back in 1968 at the CG but the scorers were Rogers, Trollope, Harland, Taylor (og).

back in 64 we won 3-0 away and Dennis Brown got all 3, maybe that's the one you're thinking of?

The only time I've seen an STFC player score 4 in an away game, was Dennis (Bullets) Brown at Bormuff in this month 48 years ago, which is quite a long time, and "Deadly" Duncan Shearer at Plymuff in this month, in 91.

Not sure there have been any other 4 goal away hauls, in the league.  One possibility, is when "Bronco" Layne scored 4 v Bath City at Twerton in an FA Cup replay in 1960, but I missed that one.

Oh yes...I used to like Bullets, so called as a lot of his goals came from range. I once did a bit of analysis on the proportion of home/away goals scored by STFC players with more than 30 League goals....and Bullets was one of maybe 2, who scored more away than at home.

Maybe time to do an upgrade on it, lost the original.

One 4 - 0 win that sticks in my mind was away at Watford in 1993. Was one of the best away days I've ever been to. Chalky hat-trick and one from Mitchell. A great forth goal and from what I remember we were in good voice that day.

Amazingly, I've seen quite a few 4's on the road down the years....but can't think I've seen a 5, which are rarer.  It includes 4's at Ashton Gate, v both Rovers and the Shitheads. 4's v Rovers at Eastville and Twerton, and 4 v Scum at the Manor.

A random memory from that Watford game, was in a quiet period, someone knocked their flask off in the side stand near Town fans, and the thing exploded on landing, with a proper bang!

Yeah I was at all the high scoring games as well that you mentioned, also a 6-0 away at Torquay under Hoddle when we played them off the park and 7-0 away at Kettering but I have never been to a Swindon 5 goal away match.

Thought Dunc Shearer was going to equal the scoring record when he got 4 away at Plymouth in a 4-0 away win too.

TBH it's about time we had one of these games, some very poorly reffed games have been in our past season and a half.

Bristol City drop points, leaving us 4 points off top with a game in hand. Obviously we'll lose 2nd place next weekend since we're not playing, but a strong position to be in.

Alternatively, 31 points until we're safe.

First time we've won 3 away league games in a row, since PdC's part season, when we did it twice, although the second time, contained wins under Picaretta, then MacDonald. So a good sign.

I'm inclined to think though, the international break, has come at a bad time...when you're on a roll, you want to play. The last one wasn't so bad as we had a few injuries.

Who knows if we can keep it up, or do like orient did last season.

Frankly, it's going to be interesting finding out.

Now everyone pray to the weather God so that the pitches don't turn into ploughed fields.

I'm quite confident this squad is massively better than I predicted pre-season. Now I'm worried about keeping it together in the January transfer window - and the fact we probably lose kas and mas to the pointless Asia cup!

On train back, fantastic performance today, rode our luck occasionally but fully deserve three points.

This is the most exciting team we have had in years, some of our football is just brilliant. Our midfield three were fantastic, totally controlled the game between them. Smith and Williams did well up front, held the ball up and brought others into the game.

Special mention to Nathan Bryne who was once again phenomenal, tore their LB to peices and was a constant threat. Only negative is that we occasionally overplayed at the back instead of clearing it upfield.

Another fantastic performance, I keep expexting us to fall off but this team just keeps proving me wrong.

Great turnout by town fans and made some good noise too, certainly put the orient fans to shame.

Yep, there's no point looking ahead and worrying about things that our out of your control, I think the Club is in pretty good hands. The men in charge will do everything they can to keep things going through the inevitably tricky times ahead.

I look forward to watching our goals on Sky tonight (eventually) and on everyone's favourite TV programme, The Football League Show, tomorrow morning. Then watching them again and maybe again after that. Then maybe several times more just for the hell of it.

Happy days.

That is a season-defining month.  In the PDC promotion season, it was when we started consistently beating the other sides around us at the top (Cheltenham, Shrewsbury, Southend) that I really started to believe we were on our way up.  Interesting.  I would regard 7 or 8 points from that run as satisfactory.

Real shame next Saturday is a non-runner that would have been a corker and real test to see if we are legimate. I think we are anyway after today as that Orient team is pretty decent on paper. They get a decent manager and they move up the table quickly.

How many home games have we got over the winter period? More importantly, against who are we going to be away?

Peterborough (A) and Franchise (A) should be ok, I imagine they spend the money on their pitch, but I'm just glad we've got a home game against Fleetwood because doubtless their pitch is going to resemble a pigyard over winter.

Today was #STFC's 300th 2-1 victory in the League since joining in 1920.

What a lovely fact.

They can where purple and Brian Marwood can score for Town.
and Calderwood can tell their hugely expensive alcoholic legend Jackanoski that he can climb out of his pocket at the end of the game

Great win if a little dubiously deserved (based on radio/twitter), at least based on first half..

Just got home!

Sat on hold on 606 waiting to tell them to stfu about City and pay attention to the club with 1.5 mil wage bill, a very young squad playing the best football in the league... didn't make it on! Maybe on the trip home from Yeovil.

That was an amazing day. Getting a bit of stick on Twitter about the smoke bombs and an apparent 'pitch invasion'.

But yeah, we definitely deserved the win!

Onwards and upwards.

Just got back - the away stand was fucking bouncing first half especially.

Two exquisitely crafted goals from us, some thuggish tackles from them.

If I had to sum up our performance, I'd say casual arrogance spilling over into complacency all too often.

Every single Orient opportunity originated from our misplaced passes, but our build up play was a joy to watch - again.

The lady linesman had a stinker first half -failed to flag them offside twice when they were yards off. And, just to show it was not bias but ineptness,  she flagged when Williams underhit a backpass straight into the path of an Orient forward.

The ref let go some dreadful tackles from them and the yellow he dished out early in the first half should have been a straight red - no argument.

For those who still say we should stop fannying around at the back should look at our opening goal.

Good short pass out from Wes and 5 passes later Smudge had slotted home.

Must mention Bell who looks he could be decent plus he appears to have a long throw in him.

Kasim was quiet again with Byrne and Smith vying for MOM

Shitty are a bit like Crawley under Evans aren't they?

I'm guessing a bit, but the Cotterill I remember made sure the ball spent a lot of time in the air and the football was industrial and direct. Our silkiness against that is a tough one to call. Although I'm sure Pulis/Stoke took many points off of Wenger at his peak.

Apparently 22 fouls by them....which suggests a deliberate attempt to kick us off the pitch, which I suppose we'll have to get used to.

One got thrown out  ;)

I got there Late ( Long Story ). Parked up round corner at 15:40ish. Got to ground as half time whistle blew. Fucktards had shut the turnstiles that were open 2 mins before when I drove past. Met another 2 later arrivals. Were told no Tickets. Met the one that got thrown out for smoking in the toilets. Walked all round the ground looking for some sort of officialdom to get in. Nothing.  Found an open door with a turnstile. Climbed over it and got in for Free. Had to sit the entire second half with the Orient Lot. One of there's totally lost the plot at the end calling all our players cheats. Wes gave him a wry ( your some sort of cunt smile ) as he walked off which seemed to infuriate the fuckwit even further. Went for a swift Pint after the game just past a KFC. Swindon Fans in good song and was outside having a fag when Kasim walked past. Why he weren't on the coach is a mystery.

As I only got in for the second half do I count as a half or a whole for the official figures.............. And the one that got chucked at half-time is he a half or a whole................. If we are both half's then there is no adjustment neccessary.....

Excellent day out.

Drove down and parked up easy at 1 ish. Tried to get a ticket only to be told the ticket office didn't open til 1:30pm....tinpot shit.

Enjoyed a pint in the coach n horses where Herthab insulted my hat......and hurt my feelings.

That pub truly is a shithole.....peeling wallpaper, sticky carpet and ripped seats...I will get a tetanus booster on Monday. But an excellent

Lots of singing, jostling and celery and beer throwing....my London mate got hit square in the back of the head with a pint....at £4:30 a pint for pissy Fosters they must have more money than sense!

Game was good. Lady Lino had a complete shocker...let the quick black lad in twice when clearly offside then flagged him off from a back pass....why didnt the ref over rule her!?

Cuthbert booked and my dream win and him getting a red was denied by another missed foul midway through the second half.

We didnt boss the game like Barnsley but were the better side and fucking about created a few chances for them which they should of buried.

Smiths goal was excellent as was the build up to Byrnes.

I thought Williams was poor today....pussy in the tackle, throwing his arms up every challenge.

Reeeeeeeves came on but instead of killing off the game we fucked about and nearly paid the price.

Anyway....I see a win at Orient for the first time and three points....Cuthbert getting Chopsy with the physio and the ref was icing on the cake.

NB The smoke bombs went off and it appears 5 coppers sat on a alleged offender....how many arrests did the Met make at the Emirates the other night?

Great win.

In a hotel in Creepy tonight for flying out from gatwick tomorrow. Thought I'd make use of the day whilst going down there, by stopping to watch the Town. Left swindon at 12, but the traffic and weather was fucking awful. Finally got to the ground at about 3:20 just in time to see Smudger net. Great turnout and noise from the town fans.

We were by far the better team. We were just taking the piss at times. They did fuck all but we let them in with some complacency and too much pissing about. Luckily they couldn't finish for shit. The could definitely tackle, badly, though. Shocker for the officials as previously mentioned by others.

Was funny watching Kasim walking down Leyton high street after the match, from the car, stuck in ridiculous traffic again. What a guy.
Traffic from Leyton to the blackwall tunnel was nose to tail pretty much all the way. Fuck knows how anyone gets anywhere in London by driving every day. Shocker. Off to Florida tomorrow for two weeks and don't miss a home game, thanks to internationals...smashing. Shame to have to break up our momentum though.

Oy Flash, you've been called out by SSP

Ha ha.....what happened?

Here are my negative texts:

Halftime:
Wiltshire. Very good display from the Town but got out of trouble with help from the awful lino. Need to be patient and it will happen...as long as we don't be silly at the back. Cuthbert getting a red is waiting to happen and I am here to see it. The flash

Fulltime:
Wiltshire. Ground out another result against a side that looked better than Barnsley without threatening up front, despite us handing them a few on a plate, including the goal at the end...Williams constant whinging and chickening out of tackles makes my blood boil. Midfield went very slack in the last 20. Two sharp goals won this game......at last i see us win at Orient...just a shame Cuthbert never got sent off......shake yer phone! The flash

Hope that doesn't lose us another 1000 off the gate....

I was in line for one of the two 'offsides' she let go early on and it was unbelievably appalling.  Had some sympathy with her for the backpass however, probably not easy to spot from her position.  It was the ref who should have seen clearly that it was a backpass (Williams putting his head in his hands was a bit of a clue) and waved play on.

I don't quite know to answer the sexist chant criticism.  I thought it was funny at the time and still do on reflection but if the lino had been (say) black and there had been chanting on that basis then obviously I'd have been appalled like everyone else.  And I'm not saying sexism isn't as bad as racism because it is, but somehow it didn't seem bad in that context.  Not logical I realise....

depends whether they were comparing Singh to Monty Panesar fielder and batsman or to Monty Panesar the bowler

either way I'm glad that STFC was the beneficiary of the worst offside decision given in over 45 years of following Town, tho' the ref was part of that too.

The offside decision was brilliant and horrible in equal measure. The reaction of their players was comedy gold but pretty much summed up the ineptness of some officials at this level.

On a brighter note. Herthab shook my hand as I entered the ground and thanked me for coming. Not sure what you had been feeding him Flash?!

Great day yesterday.  Good laugh in the pub before the game and a cracking atmosphere. The combination of copious amounts of beer and no food means I have no recollection of leaving the ground,  nor how I managed to navigate my way back to Salisbury via 2 tubes and a train. I now remember why I only do one train away day a season.

Well no Scratchings as Chilly got a tight round in...

depends whether they were comparing Singh to Monty Panesar fielder and batsman or to Monty Panesar the bowler

either way I'm glad that STFC was the beneficiary of the worst offside decision given in over 45 years of following Town, tho' the ref was part of that too.

I said to Boo as it was given....'worst decision I have seen ..ever'. Refs fault as he was very close.

I could never quite work out, when Gurnham Singh was refereeing our games if the chants comparing him to Monty Panesar, were racist or not.

Reminds me of when Wayne Allison got the Bruno chants , never felt comfortable and I'm pretty sure I remember him saying he didn't like it.

You got both read out, but post-match they discussed whether Williams deserved your criticism, and SSP said that he didn't. I ain't arguing with SSP when it comes to knowing a striker's business...

Chuffed with yesterdays result, first away game of the season and a great day out on the booze! Dirty Dicks was full of Swindon for a good hour at Liverpool Street and was a good atmosphere when we got to Orient pub as well.

Won't get too carried away but things are looking promising ahead of a tough November.

Also, could not believe they ran out of chicken balti pies just after the half time whistle had blew! Ended up with a shit meat pie that was 'warm' at best.

Sometimes we see high flying teams and think 'how are they near the top, we nearly matched them'.

It's quality in vital areas, at key moments that does it.

Well, when the opposition have taken the piss for large chunks of the game, it's hard to give credit.

If it wasn't for our occasional misplaced passes they wouldn't have had the few chances they did.

BTW we are now 8/1 3rd favs to win the league (can still get an over generous 20/1 for the JPT)

Comments on that forum seem fairly balanced, to tell the truth.

Anyway, we're still flying under the radar.  Second in the table and a lot of opposing fans still seem not to have twigged that we're better than average this year.  Hope it continues.  Can only work in our favour if it does.

I wouldn't say that. We played just as much 'nice stuff' as we have done. I never felt as if we wouldn't win, but I suppose we did give the ball away more than was comfortable.

Have you noticed that every time we win and play well the opposition fans all say their side were crap - they can't seem to appreciate the reason why.

I think our test will come when we don't play particularly well. Can we still pick up points then?

Excellent start to the season, and unlike the last there seems some belief from Cooper and Power that we could actually put a challenge together - Power's quick replacement/attempted replacement of injured first teamers is evidence of that.

No wonder opposition fans get pissed off when we are leading and pass it round at the back, there are few things as frustrating as not being able to get near the ball. I thought we were thoroughly professional yesterday and that was the sort of display we couldn't produce away from home last season - we controlled the match.

I quite enjoyed the smoke bombs (and the youth being ejected) and the predictable post match droning on the matter from the usual suspects on social media.

The clowns at the FA probably had a quick glance at the photo and used a tariff of £1K per player involved, plus a token £500 extra for Luongo's opportunistic grope of the Assistant Referee.  Their job done, then back to the bar for another large G&T!     ;D
