If you take away athletics and swimming we'b be pissing all over the US.

Not sure why they do so well in those events. Maybe they target them as there are more medals? Reckon it's more likely that those sports are popular throughout and integral with their education system. Our universities don't take sport anywhere near as seriously as they do in the US.

Very true...remember over the years, and it holds true still to some extent, when the various athletes, were introduced as having done a sports degree at some US university and it being rather sneered at as somehow not a proper degree. Certainly not the sort of thing we'd want here, old chap...bit like fellas like Luke Donald who did golf at some hick establishment.

Really? It's one thing I've always thought would be good, integrating sports with education like they do in the US. Would really like to see football coaching move under the control of schools and colleges if only to keep the big clubs away from school children - always felt uncomfortable with the way they interact with them and the long term effects it can have.

A lot, if not the majority, of the players in the big US sports all have degrees. Our footballers are all thick as shit.

Yeah, I've just added old chap to the original post as it's not my view, more how things have been seen by the higher education establisment.  I'd have loved to have had the chance to do some sporting degree, rather than the Biological Science shit I ended up with.

One of the good parts is that if you're good at sport you'll get a free and high quality education all the way through to a degree. So even if you don't make it as a professional you've something to fall back on.

What happens to all the footballers that don't make the grade over here? Shelf stackers? Call centres? The clubs don't give a fuck, that's for sure.

How did the lad get on who was brought in instead of the world number 1 in taekwondo? Would have thought he'd have got a bit of attention given the circumstances of his selection.

These 800m runners are mental. Pretty much sprinting for two laps. Amazing.

Rudisha breaks the world record and Cram states 'it's the fastest 800 metres I've ever seen'. No shit sherlock.

He didn't do too badly for someone who was a bit "suspect" before the Olympics did he.

Loved the photo action Bolt and blake were doing at the end there.
