This time, on paper, we're so far ahead of them we should win comfortably.  Which, of course, is the problem.

It's going to get all rubbish on here again, and I'm going to have to take another TEF holiday.  When is the game?

Been there and done that over the years so I won't be making to much effort to get tickets for this one. It's even more of a no win situation for us this time round. It will either be a win for the team in the higher division or a giant killing  :) for them

I hope they have fixed the awful leak they had in the toilets last time and I hope they get buses with more durability, the windows and chairs just fell out on the short 20 mile journey to the train station.

We are on a hiding to nothing in this game, if they win hey will carry on rubbing it in Swindons faces and if we win they will say "fuck em its only the JPT".

Should be a good game though and it will show us how much we have come on since March as a team.

Can't see us selling out our allocation TBH but we should have over 1k turning up, not sure what the rules are on allocation on the JPT though, I am fairly certain it isn't the 25% stated though as that I am pretty sure only applies in the FA Cup, not even in the League Cup.

Allocation of just over 1800?
But you have to allow 1700 for segregation, 20 for away officials, and 5 disabled spaces, so we'll get about 75.

If it's on Sky, it'll be a busy pub get together for us, I expect.  Beers on tap, plenty of friends there, no need to travel and no need to put money in their coffers (directly at any rate).  I'm hoping for that.

I thought Sky had a deal where they would show one tie from both the Northern and Southern sections of the cup from the 1st round to the regional final.

Our game is definetly the pick of the draw so would expect us to on tele.

We'll know either way in the next few days. My point is this. It's a nothing cup tie in a nothing cup, until you get to the sharp end of the competition. I want us to win and the thing is and this is crucial, Paolo wants to win. So expect a strong team to go out there and do the bizniz. Also it is another game where we can improve our match fitness one game earlier....

The JPT is a good trophy from Quarter finals onwards surely at this stage of the season , we should be looking forward to our next 3 league games  2 of which (Preston and Franchise  are potentially going to be there or there about at the end of the season. Rather than discussing Headington United’s Cup final . I would imagine their Forum is in Fucking Melt down,

I agree.

Sky have only pencilled in 1 date on the 3rd Sept for 1 live game so it looks like it may not be 1 from the North and 1 from the South just the single 1st round game.

A few others that aren't bad as well are Carlisle vs Preston (localish with some good rivalry) and Coventry vs Burton (1st time in the JPT for Covvy vs a fairly local team from a league below) also Chesterfield vs Oldham (last years winners vs last years Semi finalists) as well as our game and Pompeys.

So once again there are going to be a lot of disappointed Town fans who will not be able to see a game at the Kebab Stadium. I reckon the yellow filth will only give us 1200 tickets again irrespective whether they sell the home stands or not.

From Twitter. More than I expected, didn't we get 1400 for the league game?

From what they said at the game it is Adults £19, ST holders can buy tickets from 5pm Saturday up until Weds 19th 5pm, tickets one per ST holder. Additional ID needed? No phone bookings this time which in my case is not so good. Left over tickets are to go on sale from 9am 30th August but you need to be on the database.

I desperately need someone to help me out with two tickets. If someone isn't going and at some point during that open window could help me out I would be most thankful and willing to buy a bottle of red or white. And before people ask why I do not have a ST, my career in Nursing doesn't allow me every weekend so I pay on the day going to every game when I am not at work. Fingers crossed.

I've never seen us play there, from what I've heard its not one of the best away days to be had in football anyway with the tour around oxfordshire last year. I watched us play them last season in the league for the first time ever and I'll ever watch us play the scum at home. (keeps me in wifes good books  ;))

See that the Oxford chairman is admitting that this game wont make them any money and may actually cause them a loss, because of the hugh policing costs....hopefully we'll get our cut of the receipts without having to pay for the policing costs.

Strange how times change 20 years ago, we could pitch up at Oxford for a midweek fixture in a minor cup competition to see our fringe players roll over their first XI, in front of about 3500 locals, in the company of 500 Town fans.

Nobody much cared....I blame the internet, for creating the mythology about this fixture.

I can remember us playing them in the Anglo Italian Cup rehash about 20 years ago in the Hoddle era. Went to pens after a 2-2 draw and we won. Funniest moment was the tannoy announcement just before the pens that the last train to Oxford was leaving in 10 mins

Yes. I think a lot of fans just won't be arsed with the aggro. I'm taking my 17 year old daughter and I'll drive to the game but I'm not looking forward to the walk to and from the car. Am considering train or coach.

Walk to the car is fine we were parked right at the back of the overspill for that complex, unless you wear shirts and make yourselves clearly visible then you shouldn't encounter a peep of trouble. Oxford fans are either a myth or a small minority when it comes to trouble around the ground.

Know what you mean, it's pretty shit when you can't be sure you won't get aggro even when your with the family or youngsters. I know sometimes you can just get caught up in it so should seriously Concider taking minors as you just can't trust knuckle draggers whichever club they are connected to. A great example was when we were coming out of Wembley after the Millwall game and around a dozen of their morons were trying their best to goad blokes with young families into a scrap whilst their so called team were inside lifting a trophy. It's these sort of muppets that are only big men in packs.

It used to be simple back in the day. Anyone in a shirt was off limits as were people on their own, blokes with birds, disabled, kids, old gits and you never went in first when the odds were on your side. Anyone breaking these rules would be dealt with - it was self policed. What the fuck is the world coming to? The fucking youth of today, no fucking respect.

If they want to fight each other then so be it. Still find it unfair that a lad who works all week can go out at the weekend be involved in football violence and serve twice as big a sentence as a lad that does it on a saturday night with his mates but away from a match. Appears that hooligans don't simply get enough of a thrill going at it with another 'firm' but have to make the lives a misery of the non involved football fan.

That was the year before the one I'm thinking of which was played at The Manor, and undoubtedly Austin Berkley's finest hour in a Town shirt. Your game ended 3-3, before the pens...such was the enthusiasm for the fixture, it attracted about 6000 less than the Rovers game a fortnight before.

For me, near the Catherine Wheel, Sandford (come off A4074 and go right at roundabout under the bridge, instead of left towards the ground). It's about 15 min walk to the ground and is much quicker after the game with everyone else queuing up to get out.

Plus, as long as you don't wear colours, you can have a quick beer in the CW

Other than the Priory (home fans only), is that the nearest pub to the ground?  I am so glad that we don't have to play out in the middle of nowhere like that.  A stadium belongs in the middle of the community it represents...not shunted out to the arse end of town like the Kassam.  Out of sight, out of mind.  A  textbook case in how not to carry out a ground move.

To be fair to most Oxford supporters, they're no fans of the stadium either...yet another reason for them to hate Kassam.  There's even a thread on their forum where, collectively, they lament the shit hole they have to play at.

Still estimating about a 1,000.

I'll ask. I assume if you can get through on the phone, as long as you are on the database you'll be ok.

Last season was something of a one off.  We hadn't played them for years, so demand was bound to be high.  But generally, we don't tend to take many fans to Oxford.  A lot of people are, quite rightly, turned off by the potential for aggro.  And the other glaringly obvious factor is simply that Oxford is a crap away day.  The ground is in completely the wrong place and the only pub within walking distance is for home fans only.

There are many, many better away days than Oxford.  If we get our local games vs Bristol City or Reading back any time soon, you would see much bigger away followings.  I'm not surprised that a lot of people have chosen to save their money.

Standard STFC denial.

Nothing to do with the fact they shoved it right up us home & away last season and have all the bragging rights then?

I'm going because I want to see us beat them at the Kassam, I wouldn't go unless I was coaching it due to the problems and as I normally drive away the pub is generally out of bounds anyway.

The first part of the sale was in person only, one of the reasons we haven't bothered.

Whether they soften this approach based in the lack of sales I don't know.

We gave sprog the option of Stoke or Oxford, and he decided he would rather go to Stoke.
After Tuesday night I'm glad he did :)

If bragging rights are your thing, then fair enough.

The attendance figures over the years back up the point I was making, if you really want to look in to it.  The aggro factor is a turn off for many.  Why deny it?

Title: Re: Poxford away in JPT
Post by: walcot red on Thursday, August 30, 2012, 11:13:54
If the game was being held at home I would definatly be going as the risk of any aggro is low and more importantly our police know how to handle football fans. I didn't go to the away match and I was glad I didn't, the bus load of people from the station to the ground got there when the match kicked off, and the grief inside and outside the ground at full time has just put me off, coin throwing and smashed up bogs, sounds like loads of fucking fun.

If their ground was in the centre of Oxford then I would've gone, as it would've been easy to get in and out quickly and avoiding any potential trouble but the ground is near their version of Penhill and for that reason I'm out.

Let's not forget it is only the first round of the JPT.

1,000 away is a decent turnout for any team for what is essentially little more than a pre-season friendly.

I don't want that prick DiCanio celebrating on our pitch. We've had the bragging rights for over a decade, that has to continue. OB will want an Oxford win, as it will be very ugly if we lose.

If we put 7-8 first teamers out and then give fringe players like Rooney a game, we should piss all over Oxford.

The quality of our team and squad has improved leaps and bounds since last season.  I'm sure Oxfords team has improved as well, but i think Di Canio will want to put one over Oxford.

Sad thing is, if we beat them, they will claim they dont care about the poxy cup etc

They'll always have an excuse anyway Stef. We only won the league last year due to our budget blah blah. Presumably that crooked cunt Maxwell never put any money in when they had a couple of good years in the 80's.

Sounds to me like Eric's had more rucks than i've had hot dinners. Amazing he's escaped under the radar of the plod really.

They were clearly more excited about beating us last year than going for promotion, they can't now claim the 'poxy cups - concentrating on the league' bollocks excuse if we win.

Not surprised ticket sales are slow, a midweek game, a shit ground to get to, only to face the likes of Eric throwing seats at women and children etc. What fun his life must be!

Edit: Di Canio's Barcelona = Swindon comment seems to have wound them up... :D

I genuinely do not care about Poxford or the JPT.  Don't get me wrong, last seasons trip to Wembley was a good day out, but I did not come away feeling down because we lost.  Would I swap it for league sucess this year?  Damn right I would - in a heartbeat!  I would play the reserves in it all the way to the final if I could!

As for Poxford...I think of them like a bastard child that was a result from a one night fling 30 years ago that you h only just found out about.  Sure, "officially" it is yours, but having no interaction with it for so long doesn't means you have any realfeelings for it.  Perhaps if we had played eachother more regularly over recent years loosing to them would mean more, but for me it was no worse than loosing to someone like Crewe.  Dissapointed to loose 6 points, no more than that!

Wilder won't go to Coventry because Coventry have already stated in the local press there that they will appoint a currently out of work manager so not having to pay a compansation fee.

That said I would expect Pox to pay them to take him off their hands making it a viable proposition.

Oxford station is nearly 5 miles from their ground.  Similar sort of distance as Swindon station to Hunt's Copse or the edge of Wootton Bassett.  You'd be almost as well alighting at Radley station...which is barely any further from the Kassam.

Shit.  You're right!  I think it's really old fashioned as well...but I use the train to get to work 5 days a week, and maybe it's rubbed off on me?

The other one that gets me is the regular tannoy announcement at Waterloo station that asks passengers to make sure they don't leave any baggage or parcels unattended.  Very quaint.  Bit of an anachronism, maybe?

Radley is almost twice as long - by taxi - than from Oxford train station unless you're prepared to walk it through Sandford Lane, over the Thames and the King's Arms

My comment (stopping at Radley) was only semi-serious.  I've never tried getting off there myself.  Just trying to illustrate the point that while Oxford station might sound like a logical place to head for, it's so far from the ground that you'll be at the mercy of buses, cabs and the police when you get there.  If the train is your only option, then fair enough.  But, unlike our place, the Kassam has to be one of the least train-friendly grounds to reach.  I'd find another way if it was me.

This is true, walking it is a mile or so closer but by taxi or bus its almost twice the distance due to the station being on the wrong side of the river.

Haven't heard that announcement yet to be fair, but yes it does sound quite 'traditional'.

I shudder at the mention of Waterloo. I have to go through it to get to Battersea at about 6.30/7pm on a Friday night and its a nightmare to try and get past the throngs of people standing staring at the boards, more often than not, right in the way!

According to Google, by road

Taxi from the station is the best bet.

If you get a beer in town then well done, but would still suggest getting a taxi.

If you're not sure of the buses then you'll end up in BB Leys and will stand out as a 'tourist' and get chased by some hoodies!

If you're by yourself then I would try the Priory pub near the ground, as long as you're sensible  :zipped:   you should be ok and blend in with the crowd. Have a good one.    :pint:

Bet their fans cant believe it either - must be underwhelmed

Don't think it's true as official sources are rubbishing the rumours. Shame though, would have been well funny.

It might be true. He's taken a pile of shite historically non league team back into the league and kept them there while winning 2 cup finals in a year. Not a bad job done.

A few pubs are streaming it, so I assume you'll be able to watch it on betting websites.

Are you absolutely sure this is true. All I have found is a Messenger "event" which presumably means cheep beer + radio!

He is gone. Massive money put on him by people 'so say' in the know. Take a look at the betting sites. Was also in attendance at Coventry's game. This is surely going to go in our favour. Coventry really are scraping the barrell...

What the fuck would are Coventry thinking (IF true).

"What we need is a man who can thwart our playoff hopes?"

I'm not 100%, but pretty certain someone posted earlier on saying a pub advertised a stream.

I doubt he'll go, to be honest.  The funny bit, for me, was the plea in the initial post - followed by the 'weren't you calling for him to get the boot 5 mins ago?' posts that immediately followed it.

Who have later said if they can find a channel it is being broadcast on then they will show it.

As for betting websites, none have the game in their schedules, because they never show English football.

I hear from the Coventry forum that Dennis Wise could become new manager in the next couple of days, they are pretty much refuting the stories about Gene Wilder totally. Apparently he was there to scout Burton who they play in 2 weeks time.

Shame really because Wilder leaving them would unsettle an already sinking ship ready for tonight, still...it seems to have upset the neanderthals on their forum so I am all for this rumours :D

That's more than some full attendances at last night's games

We should be good enough to win, would be galling to lose to them 3 times in 12 months.

More importantly I'm keen to see if Bassone has magic feet like Cibocchi.

Only 752 at fellow Div 1 team Scunny vs Notts County and 981 at Dagers vs Stevenage and only 1,249 at Creepy vs Gills so not too bad really I guess for a Wednesday evening trip.

no chance. get on one of the buses going to the station IF you get let out of the ground straight away. if not then they will put you on buses after half an hour in the ground, straight to the station.

Others on here may know more about it if they were on the tour of Oxon countryside last time!  :)

I try and resist looking at that yellows forum but occasionally the temptation gets too much, Ardiles style, and I cant resist having a little peek.
But every single time I look on there I am taken aback by how much they are obsessed with us and these games...
I honestly feel sorry for them.

They do have about 20 topics on there though Dave.

Obviously it works both ways to an extent - that's why it's a (local) rivalry.

Title: Re: Poxford away in JPT
Post by: jimmy_onions on Wednesday, September 5, 2012, 14:04:23
yes but this thread meanders all over the place....

I seem to recall, prior to the last league game, every single visible thread on their board was related to the game, covering such critical topics as:

 - what time is everyone getting to the priory
 - favourite previous dust up
 - will you get getting the no. 3 or no78 bus?
 - where are you sitting
 - what will you be wearing?
 - what are you having for breakfast that day?
etc etc
there is a difference between a healthy rivalry and an obsession.

I've just had a quick peep. Just looking at numbers, there's about 250 comments in swindon related threads. This one has over 300.

As an aside, god knows how they can use that forum. So gharishly yellow, and the writings so small. Completely unusable. This one may go down every couple of hours, but at least its readable.

Oxford is understandable though. To a degree.

The amount of sad cases relating to Crawley, and Steve Evans, is quite baffling.
