Now let's be serious Di Canio is a very bad appiontment, there's a 50/50 chance that he will be good, and if he is good he will leave which he has already come out and said.

Where as any other candidate who turns out to be half decent would have stayed until 2020 and booked us a Champion's League place.  Get real.  Good managers do a job, and then move on.  Like Hoddle did.

And by the way, I think your figures are wrong.  I'd say it's more 62/38 that he'll be good.

You cant say it's bad we don't know either way yet. What it does do is give us a high profile and a manager with passion. I'm 100% behind this appointment, couldn't be better.

Need to give 100% support.

Good decision by the board financially, bound to sell a few more season tickets than originally expected after relegation.

Looking forward to next season.

Oh dear another post without any substance. Did you come to this conclusion when Hoddle, Macari & Ardiles was appointed?

Any manager that is successful at this club will move on, we're all ambitious and Di Canio is no different. Why don't you wait and see how he does before writing him off? Just a thought

Interesting a few people i've spoken to today who lapsed their season ticket at the end of the season have now said that they'll probably renew now Di Canio is manager.

Some are saying that they'll only renew if the board drop the season ticket prices are dropped back to early bird prices for a few days as they can't afford the price at the minute.

I wonder how much a season ticket sale influx we'll get now

That would be a pretty difficult thing to do IF they have sold a few at the current price.

Encouraging though.

Fair point.  I managed to get mine done just before the end of April which was good but i know some of the people I know couldn't renew at the time because of the timings of the early bird

Absolutely agree, there was little time to pay after the announcement for early bird deadline was made.

I just can't see them refunding N people who have paid since early bird discount.

It would be very difficult for them to do.

In fairness, even at these "Phase 2" prices ours must be amongst the cheapest season tickets in the league, hardly extortionate to have to pay 250-300 quid.

Title: Re: Adver News: Di Canio new Town boss
Post by: RJack on Friday, May 20, 2011, 12:20:06
I've just looked on their website & hadn't realised Phase 2 was extended. I think a lot of them had assumed the season tickets had moved onto Phase 3 which is the £399 in the side stands so this bit of news will encourage to renew now

Im finding it all a bit suprisingly sad, people that I like some just from the internet and some from real life feel they can no longer activly support the club they have supported all their lives. Its their choice and I admire them for making that stand.Im not that principled,I'll still go(occasionly) and support Swindon Town,I wont be singing his name or clapping him though even if we win evey single game next season.

I have just renewed. I wrote to Nick Watkins at the end of the Phase 1 price stating that I had not renewed because of the lack of visibility of the intentions of the board and club.  A few days later the news of Fitton and the actions of getting rid of Harte.  Watkins said that if I did decide to renew before the end of May to let him know.  I did that and he let me have it at Phase 1 price.

Now that I can see that the club will be at least having a go by investing in the manager and squad I am happy to renew, back in April nobody had a clue what the intentions of the board was.

Had the board given more visibility in April then I believe that the take up would have been more, because the phase 2 price will put some off.

I would like to think if we are doing well and teams start to swarm, that Di Canio is not a quitter and would at least see the job through to the end of the season. He has always struck me as a fairly loyal player and I hope that remains the case during his management career.

Well Well interesting decision, i will back PDC and the team as always but got a feeling this appointment could spell disaster one way or another either we will be shit like this season because he doesnt know the league and he signs the wrong players, Or we will be half decent in top 7 and he will leave and we will have to try and find someone to replace him in 6 months time.

I think it is a brave decision from JW but it could prove costly this time next year, Hope im proved wrong though, Also at least we know the players and manager will be up for Oxford because one thing i do know is that he is passionate and hopefully that will get through to the players!

A couple of things spring to my mind.

1st If PDC is gone in January then we will have hade one hell of a first half of a season and that's better than the alternative.

2nd If his team plays with half the passion and a qauter of the skill then we are in for one hell of a season.

3rd This a staement of intent by the board. Lots of big names up for this job and we've picked one of the biggest.

4th For all you guys that have principles. Well I've just come back from West Scotland and principles are a pain in the arse. (Celtic Rangers) In business if I dealt with people I like or approve of, then I wouldn't of worked since 2007. You guys grow some and support your club. This is a football club not a paliament.

I personally can't wait to see what he can do for us.

The board need to watch we only sign Italian players on loan.

Thing with Di Canio is to get the best out of him he does need to feel wanted (which is why his spell at Wednesday was mediocre).

Its better to burn out, than to fade away.

I suppose we can begin to gauge his intentions & commitment to our success when he puts his coaching team in place.  Will it be someone with experience and knowledge of Leagues one & two or a former crony from his premiership days?  Whoever he chooses to work with I hope that there is a continued commitment to developing the youth & a place for Zippy in the grand scheme of things. I will also be interested in his transfer targets.

Let the build-up to the new season begin

This is the worry for me....what we need is someone who has had a close look at what we've got, can ship out what we don't need and bring in Div 4 style players.

What we don't need is someone who's got no idea of our players, no idea of Div 4 and no idea of the sort of players suited to the level.

You can't achieve this by watching vids....you need to be slogging away, up and down the land watching all sorts of crap football in crap places...

I can see di Canio taking the T*dd route of using an agent, then trying to coach what he gets.

Title: Re: Adver News: Di Canio new Town boss

My worry too Reg - League Two is a difficult place to get out of & I wonder if Italian Serie B players will take to the more robust & athletic style in that league.  Wasn't the Chief Scout Ken Ryder compiling a list of possible transfer targets before the last season ended?

Julian Dicks has just left Grays Athletic - within the last week I think so he'd be a possible no.2 for Di Canio. I had hoped to hear of someone with a more cultured footballing philosophy joining Di Canio at the CG but if he can get the players fit & playing with commitment & consistency then who knows?

I wish all this negativity would stop. The bloke hasn't even arrived in Swindon yet and people are writing him off.

Jeremy Wray and Nick Watkins are no mugs. They wouldn't appoint someone (and pay them a huge salary) unless they saw something they liked.

Di Canio as a player was unbelievably skillful, hot headed and passionate. But also, when did you see him dive ? Hardly ever. He was a true sportsman.

This appointment is the best thing to happen to the club since Hoddle in my view. Lets get right behind Paolo because I have a good feeling about this.

I only ever did that once - the day after we won at Wembley in 1993.  Wore it for pretty much the whole day and the most severe reaction I got was a scowl from one bloke as I walked out of a shop.  Fact is...most folk in Oxford (or anywhere else) don't care that much about the local side and care even less about another one from 30 miles up the road.  We exaggerate the scale of the rivalry at times.

Its all about crossing that Magdelen bridge and going into the shit bit, thats the Poxford United part. They do come into the City centre on a saturday night, but the rest of the time its full of toffs and Japanese tourists.

It's not though.  The area immediately east of Magdalen Bridge, especially the wedge between Cowley and Iffley Road, is student city.  Oxford is one of the most ghetto-ised cities I can think of.  It's not for nothing that their ground is in the far south east of town...that's where a huge slice of their support comes from.  North Oxford, city centre...very little interest in Oxford United there, for obvious reasons.

Edit: I'm kind of agreeing with you, now I think about it.  Just pointing out that you have to go some way east/south of the centre before you reach the areas that lots of their fans live in.
