You rekon? Their manager is typical Iffy/coach not manager material. Up front they have a player called Yemi who they like but he never scores because hes not very good, hes really a winger. Half the forward players are on loan and must be thinking of their own clubs by now. Including Wovers very own Micheal Pook - Lewis Haldane, who drove Rovers fans mad for 3 years.

Only good player theyve got is Paul Evans who signed last week. He was well unfit when he joined us, so he must be a proper fat bastard by now.

Rejects are rejects wherever they come from. League 2 rejects like Haldane and Constable are in no way guaranteed to make it in the Conference where you get a lot of the semi pro up and at em mentality. Look at Barrow thrashing the scum opening day.

They need to get Patterson out and get a strong, older manager in who has a few contacts. Had this same argument with OF pre season.

Jim Smith....the Patterson/Iffy comparison is interesting because as soon as you're top heavy with loan players, and a thin squad, it should tell you there will be trouble ahead.

Their fans are amongst the bigger arseholes in football..couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch.

I see old Cuntstubble is not doing to badly there this season but it's an odd league to get out of that doesn't seem to far off in standards now than the lower half of league two so it's often no surprise that relegated clubs suffer quite badly in their first couple of seasons.

Patterson I have to agree he's a yuuuuuuuuuf coach promoted on the cheap and he doesn't appear tohave a grip on the squad.  Their captain resigned last week citingit was effecting his form on the pitch, which is never a good sign.

Agreed though it couldn't happen to nicer bunch.

When is their qualifying game for the FA cup first round? One can only dream of such a draw.

I remember when it came out last time. I went fucking mental. Good times. Shame about the result in the end.

Surely the reason Patterson was appointed (other than Smith going upstairs) was that it was a cheap option - the clock is ticking for their boss but I doubt they could appoint a credible replacement.

Never forget it kids. Watch your backs when they are around, especially with England. Their cuntishness knows no bounds with us.

JPC, doesnt get the rivalry side of football. Just the training ground tittle tattle that usually keeps teenage girls interested.  :D Football is training ground to the computer and back, he doesnt need to worry about them.  ;)

Smith is a complete pisshead and is loosing it big time. They are a mirror image of him. A sad shambles.

Theyve never really had a good manager in 15 years. You would have to think someone in the end will turn them around. But then maybe they really are running out of time with it this time?

I went today, my first match of the season. What an utter shower of shite we were. Patterson isn't up to scratch; awful formation and dodgy team selection. Apart from the penalty and hitting the bar early on, we didn't have a singe shot on goal. Managed four consecutive passes at one point, then kicked the ball to touch. This club is fucked.

Id love to see Oxford win back to back promotions find themselves in League One then get beat about 4-1 by us at the Kassam.

Playing Rovers, Cheltenham & Hereford isnt the same.

Being in a league with City, Rovers, Cheltenham, Yeovil and the yellow lot would make for a very interesting season! Don't see it happening any time soon though unfortunately.

Not interested in Cheltenham and especially not the Poddington Peas (Yeovil). At least Cheltenham is good drinking.

Rovers are proper, it has to be said, but we will never be a rivalry as intense as those on their doorstep. I think our rivalry with them has some more distance left to run. They think they can take the piss down here.

For a small club, Hereford also punch well above their weight, it has to be said.

As for Oxford, we were all sure of victory in 2002, and look what happened there. If it happens then great, we'll be up for it. But if it doesnt then it doesnt.

Despite everything we could still play a league game against them next season. Things happen fast sometimes in football.

I went to lots of games that season. City away was 1-0 wan't it. Reeves scored? We had Exeter home and then away in a replay early on in the league cup. Errr.. remember oxford obviously. Lost 2-0 away at reading? Was that the season where we beat Colchester 1-0 away with the Route 1 Reddy goal or was the year after?

My memories not so good anymore.

It's amazing that it was 8 years ago. Yeovil, Cheltenham and Hereford are  definitely poor replacements for City, Oxford and Reading.

And Rovers as well, who finnished a point behind us and were relegated.

Yeah, it turned out to be a vintage season of its kind. Survival against all odds. To be honest I was a 15 games a season man before that season, but I must have been to 90% of our games that season. It was pretty crappy at the start, couldnt believe the shit Todd had bought, but the fans rallied fantastic around King.

Reddys goal at Colchester was a Massive 3 points.

We got the better of City and the Scum. Reeves 1-0 was that season, we didnt get another result at Trashton for 4 years after that. For the home game, There was once a picture of Reddy sliding on his knees in front of miserable soaked shit heads on the bank on the Adver site, fucking brilliant. Not to mention Turbo.  ;D

The first game at the Madjeski was dissapointing, but at least we smashed as many things up as we could. The home defeat was an absolute gut wrencher. Devastated.

It was a vintage season. Wiltshire Sound even did live commentary for the Rovers vs. Wycombe game which kept us up didn't they? I remember listening to it, a fair few of my mates went, not sure why I didn't.

Seemed to be a bit more spirit behind the team from the fans, maybe it's just that I'm not so involved any more.

Ooh I'm getting some memories through the hazy mist... the Colchester away game was one which was rearranged from a mid week game which was called off really late wasn't it? I only went to the rearranged fixture but they were handing out free tickets to everyone on the coach so I got in free anyway.

We did have some crap players that season. Marco Tuamola(sp?), Kim Heiselburg, Martin Williams (I can't even remember if that was his name, the crap striker who soon drifted back into non-leagues), Mark Robertson (the Australian who I remember getting subbed at half time for being fucking shit), and probably a few others which I've forgotten.

Oh and not a Todd signing, but Adrian Bakali in the squad on a non-contract basis for most the second half of the season before making a token appearance away at Stoke on the last day of the season. He could barely waddle outside of the centre circle. Classic. Didn't help that the rest of the players looked like they may have been hung over.

Title: Re: Let's all laugh at Oxford
Post by: Spencer_White on Saturday, September 20, 2008, 21:37:14
No, the spirit and togetherness of the fans was fantastic that season. We would shout red army for 30 minutes without a second thought. I think most people remmembered the double relegation of 94-95 and the pain spurred us on. Maybe it helped that so many of our local rivals were in the same league, every other game was a bit personal. Definately a lot of nostalgia for that season. The Invincible 92nd minute winner v Peterborough sealed the deal.

But a few old faces dropped out after that season.

I once had a chat with Turbo about that game...he didn't even realise O*frod were rivals, for him they were just a shit team in a shit ground with small crowds...not something to get too worked up about.  He was quite surprised to learn his brace in the final game at the Manor gave him some sort of legendary status.

So the point stands that Turbo refused to bottle the big game.

It's not so much footballers are thick, just that they have a completely different perspective than fans...whilst for us fans it's an all consuming passion for them it's a job.

Turbo's passion was the property he owned in Spain.

Robinson was a Notts County fan too, so you'd think he'd have an inkling of what it was to be a lower league football fan?!

He always seemed a decent bloke when I chatted to him, one of the boys. Heard from another player that Turbo and King didn't see eye-to-eye and he wouldn't be afraid to stand up in the dressing room and give a bit back. Not the most talented player by any means but always gave everything. Remember a lung-busting run from our own box all the way to the corner flag v Wigan when they walked the league. Brilliant.

i recognise the man on the right from the oxford mail stand. usually to be found getting extremely irate at our players, whilst covering the person in front in spit. a surefire case for a wife beater, or a very lonely bastard.

there have been times in recent seasons we coul do with a turbo in midfield. fuck all talent but by god his work ethic was off the scale.
Spot on. "Fuck all talent" is a bit harsh, but he was certainly no Ronaldo. But he still remains one of the players I remember most fondly from the past few years just because he gave it his all every week.

just about four. the bottom end is open space betweeen the clubhouse and pitch, so although there is no stand as such, you can watch the match from that side.

OUFC are currently closer to OCFC than us, but only just. If United went down and City went up they'd be in the same division in 2009/10 which is unlikely as Oxford City are a-strugglin' too.

Spot on. On the pitch, being leagues better than them is obviously immensely gratifying. Off the pitch, Pox are a glimpse into the future we'd have been facing - assuming we'd managed to actually  stay in business - under our previous wise leadership. Save the gloating and just thank our lucky stars we got rid before it was too late.

Personally, I don't want to see any football club go bust (and no that doesn't include Franchise - they're a sick experiment that should have been strangled in the test tube, sadly allowed to thrive due to the ineptness of the football "authorities", not a football club)

Title: Re: Let's all laugh at Oxford
Post by: oxford_fan on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 09:13:00
the manor ground was everything a football stadium should be.

a small part of our problem is the soulless tip we have for a ground now. half empty and stands too far away from the pitch and each other. down here in the depths of the conference (although the number of recognised teams is increasing each year; mansfield, kiddy (ish), york, wrexham, torquay, cambridge and ourselves) the opposition come from their tinpot sheds to this shiny piece of shit with no ability to contain any sense of atmosphere, and a perfect pitch. not surprising that they raise their games really.

one thing that should be noted is that the vocal support here is outstanding. on saturday the east stand sung throughout the second half, despite us being 2-1 down and playing utter gash. it was the 'we are the left/right side of london road' song too, which has to go down as my personal favourite.

if i ever become a multimillionaire i'll buy oufc and build them a new, small (but with room for expansion when the inevitable promotions come), compact, intimidating ground. the ends behind the goals will be the London Road End and Cuckoo Lane. I'd have terracing if at all possible. And I'd personally open the Firoz Kassam urinal, where fans would have the opportunity to piss on his face.

i predict another defeat tonight. unless he plays a regular 442 with guy starting, and a balanced midfield. then we have a (slim) chance of snatching a point.

Well I went to the match and decided not to abuse their fanbase as he was quite a nice bloke.  Ended up going to pens and chip winning (5-4 I think).  And as expected I did hate the ref.  Honestly you think we have it bad at the CG blatant penalty turned down and its worse when your so close to the pitch and can really se how crap they are.

Only other thing of interest was that Chalky Whites son Joe was playing for chippenham.  He's a youth player with Wovers and it would appear that they are cutting costs and trying to net rid of lots of their young players.  He's pretty good for that level though.

Statement from the Board
Posted on: Thu 25 Sep 2008

Fans, Sponsors and the Press are aware of the action taken by the Stadium Company, Firoka (Oxford United Stadium) Ltd, on Tuesday at the Oxford United home game against Cambridge as they failed to service the Club's food and beverages requirement for the fixture. This affected supporters, sponsors and officials alike and was hugely embarrassing all round for everyone involved with Oxford particularly with the live cameras there showing Oxford United finally break its live TV duck.

We would like to apologise to all of our supporters who dealt with the situation with a tremendous show of loyalty and a large dose of common sense, perhaps buoyed by a great win. It is not the first time that supporters have had to deal with disappointment from this source.
Article continues
Advertisement

We have been asked to comment publicly on the reported statements made by John Angus and Firoz Kassam in the past 24 hours on this matter. We would preface these responses by pointing out that we have to continue dealing with these people if the main Oxford United objective is ever to be reached of acquiring the Stadium and Conference Centre in order for Oxford United to be self-sufficient with its own incomes and without the current high rent.

Mr Angus is quoted as saying:

"Each quarter a payment is required for the rent which has not been met. We have spoken to the club since lunchtime today (September 23rd) and asked them for payment. The payment was not forthcoming and we could not provide a food service without that."

Mr Kassam is reported as saying:

"The rent is due. Every quarter we have had to get the bailiffs to get the rent. In the current financial climate we are looking to run our business more efficiently."

The true facts are that the rent was not due at the time of Tuesday's game. It is only due on the 29th September, next Monday which is quarter day.

The Stadium Company insisted that it was due on September 25th (this coming Thursday) and - in breach of the Stadium Licence - that Oxford United provides them with a September 25th postdated cheque for the full £117,103 by that afternoon of September 23rd or they would withdraw services from the game.

In response to the assertion that bailiffs have been used every quarter to enforce the rent, the true facts are that bailiffs have never been used to get the Stadium rent throughout the 10 quarters since we took over the Club. It is always a great struggle to pay the quarterly Stadium Rent of £117,103 yet on average, over two and a half years and 10 quarters since we acquired the Club, the Rent has been paid an average of only 8 days late and the latest ever was 30 days.

The Shop Rent of £7,931 was overlooked one quarter and the bailiffs arrived unannounced after only 6 days. That is the only occasion in our tenure when bailiffs have been used against Oxford United as was disclosed at the recent AGM.

Most Landlords are reasonable with Rental payments, particularly in difficult times. This seems not to be the case with Firoka.

For completeness, when considering amounts owed by Oxford United to Firoka, there are always routine small amounts outstanding between the parties for catering, hotels etc. As at Tuesday's invoices, Oxford United owed Firoka £3,645 and Firoka owed the club £1,902.

Finally, our view on postdated cheques is that these are unnecessary and dangerous in principle when one is continually struggling for revenues.

This recent event is a clear example of the kind of unreasonableness which has made dealing with the Stadium Company so difficult over the last 2 years. The terms of our Licence Agreement state very clearly that they must provide services for games and they have breached those terms, perhaps unknowingly, but to the embarrassment of many thousands of Oxford supporters.

We make no secret of the financial difficulties of running a Football Club with falling attendances and high Stadium rent and other costs. Every month is a struggle and our Investors and myself have already put in far more money than we wished.

However, whilst a serious possibility, it would be so frustrating and annoying for the Board and for all Oxford supporters for us to fail when we are closer than ever to a realistic Partnership which, within 12 months, could return the Stadium to Oxford United, allow Mr Kassam a reasonable financial exit and allow the Club thereafter to fund itself within its own means from stadium revenues.

We would ask Mr Kassam to help as much as possible in these mutually difficult times and would welcome other initiatives from fans, investors or business partners to help Oxford United get through these short-term difficult times with the positive prospect of our main objective being realistically achieved.

OXFORD UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB

Here is my interpretation of Oxford United's board statement.

Dear fans,

Firoz Kebabs come no more.

Jim Rosenthal very hungry.

Want food now.

Send us food or give us the stadium or Timmy Mallett will starve to death.

1) Kassam is a shithead.
2) Be very careful if someone promises you a stadium redevelopment but gets all hazy about who gets the keys.

Punchbowl got a couple looking after the pub whilst the normal landlord's on holiday?  They're the ones who took temporary charge of the Jovial.  Nice people, hope Alan called Smith a c*** though.

He lives down my way and is often spotted in the Maidenhead/Cookham/Marlow area. He is a grade A cunt.

On a seperate note, if Oxford get relegated they would be playing Maidenhead Utd next year

They would also very probably be playing Farnborough FC, my local side.  I saw them beat Gloucester City a few weeks back.  Already looking good for promotion to Conference South at the end of this season.

This kind of statement sounds familiar.... As this Oxford fans says...

Quote
It sounds like bad defensive mistakes rather than tactically problems, what can the manager do once the players step on the field? You cannot legislate for a defender not doing his job. Its damned frustrating as we take one step forward and mess it up through poor individual play and take two back.

Hmmmmmm..........

He told a group of supporters in the pub before the Lewes game (bearing in mind that their fans have been calling out for official communication from him for weeks and he's been in hiding) that he'd all but sorted out getting the backing to buy back the stadium from Kassam except the "investors" had withdrawn following a (fairly mild) press release from OxVox (their Trust). So apparently these mythical investors had done so little homework on the club they were happy to sink in millions on his say-so but got cold feet when they found out from a supporters press release that actually the club was in quite a lot of debt and that the chairman wasn't the thoroughly good chap and astute businessman he'd made himself out to be. Basically he was trying to cover up his own fuck-ups by blaming the supporters trust in such a ridiculously transparent Scooby Doo villain kind of a way ("And I've bought the stadium back by now if it wasn't for them pesky kids") that his position became untenable. Although I don't know whether he compared it to being a lot like buying  a house.

Don't think they need any tips from us. Merry's pub perfomance apparently led to chants of "If you all hate OxVox clap your hands" from a (minority) section of their fans during the Lewes game. Which he presumably found temporarily gratifying until it also led to him being forced to stand down for being crassly embarrassing. From what I can gather, they've gathered quite a bit of support from being attacked by him and the new chairman has already been in touch with them pledging to improve relations and open proper dialogue

I think it was more a case of the straw that broke the camel's back

Quote

Problem is, from what I can tell, that Merry's reign has been such a disaster, Kassam at least looks competent by comparison. He may have robbed them blind (metaphorically speaking of course) but he could at least run the club better than Merry did, if only so he could get HIS stadium deal through. There but for the grace of God and all that

I predict next season that the Conference will have higher average attendances than League 2.

There are some ifs, Bradford City would have to go up.

But the FL have ruined their own bottom tier.

Well, no-one really knows exactly what the internal discussion within their board was. But it seems he'd already made such a badger's arse of the whole situation it was a "when" not "if" anyway even before he flapped his gob in the pub. That probably just hastened the inevitable. <disclaimer> This is from an outsider looking in</disclaimer>
