Title: dont go anywhere unless its vital
Post by: Arriba on Friday, July 20, 2007, 13:29:38
the roads in swindon are like rivers.
greenbridge, stratton and round abouts is fucked.my car now has puddles in the footwell.the river between coleview and covingham has burst its banks and the water is about 2-3 feet deep in the road there(i drove through it)
water is coming up through the roads in that area too.
it is fucking carnage people.cars broke down everywhere.people up to their knees in water pushing their cars.
how my car manged to splutter its way home i dont know?

After 2 hours on the 419 I finally reached the road behind Asda 5 mins from my house. But it was closed forcing an hour detour back onto Thamesdown drive...........

My day is now complete. After being sent all round Swindon thanks to road closures, Mrs Batch and Batch Jr abondon the car and needed assistance to cross the flooded road that goes from sparcells into thamesdown drive.

Here is the flood I had to piggy back Jr across:

My lady's folk's place in Minety is now underwater. We left at about noon to get back to London before the motorways were flooded and as we left the stream up the side of the house was rising VERY quickly.

They's been living in chaos for the last 2 months as the water tank in the loft blew up flooding most of the house. After waiting 6 weeks for everything to dry out, the new floors and walls were finished this week. Now the water has come up and it's all going to start again. Luckily the carpet and furniture wasn't in yet but the kitchen, garage and new floors and walls will all be buggered.

Another few weeks of fans and dehumidifiers (noisy buggers they are too) then rip it all up and start again!

Cheers for the pictures everybody. I thought they were proper ace. Sorry if you've been affected and all, but it's been a randomly exciting day. There was a nice friendly understanding vibe at Los Gatos which was ace, especially early on; when I was stuck in the kitchen alone, trying to finish off some preparation whilst telling the waitress not to take any orders until 6.30. Which she ignored by 45 mins. (She's lovely really, just not very good at saying "no" to customers.) Nobody seemed to mind too much, as far as I could gather, We were kitchen staff 100% by 6.30 so every thing worked out. I'm going to have words with somebody about the state the kitchen was in when I got there. It meant that I didn't get to make any Chocolate Pudding.

My step-dad spent most of his day on "flood watch" yesterday.

My parents live in Purton, right at the bottom of the hill. They have a stream running alongside their garden which is the main outlet for all the water that comes down off of the hills.

The stream got right up to the top of the banks and started coming into their garden about 3 o'clock. Their neighbours have recently put up a new fence up on the other side of the bank which stopped the water from finding the natural flow of the land.

So my step-dad got his waders on, pulled out the new fence and whoooooooosh all the water poured into the neighbours garden (which is on a slope so there was no danger of their house being flooded).

My sister got a video on her mobile, I'll try and get her to send it to me and I'll upload it.

Drove back from Purton myself at about 10:30 last night and all the water on the roads had gone.

It's bad up by the turning for Dalton Barracks on the Marcham Road, closed now i believe.... bit of flooding down Mill Lane, but that's about it for us.

The cricket pitch was fine for play today, but the opposition phoned to say they couldn't make it, as their village is 6 feet under(water)

It's in between the White Horse Inn and the Turnpike pub.

The world famous Vale of the White Horse Inn has a lake/pond beside it, yes. Great pub it is too. Nasty little hump bridge over the railway lines going around a corner right by it. Lovely when trucks and buses come steaming over/round.

I would imagine that it has risen dramatically and perhaps even got into the bottom floor of the pub (the bit with the jukebox/pooltable/quizmachine/etc).

It's a scary old place in there. My girlfriend's folks have lived on that road for 30 years and still get looked at as 'outsiders'. Needless to say I've never been in. Is it true they pour your coke from an old, warm 2 litre bottle that's sat under the bar? I've never seen anyone go in or out, and only occasionally see the door open and lights on.

You've got it Timmy!!!  If your girl friend's family were to go in there, the landlord (another Tim) would ask them every question under the sun to find out their details and then gossip it all over the village.  The door is usually shut as it opens straight into the bar and the place is so dark it just looks like the lights are not on!!  I always take the mick out of him in the winter about his fire in the grate, was it two lumps of coal tonight or three??  He gets right niggled, but has a fan heater behind the bar for himself!!  As regards the coke bottle, some truth there (probably buys them in Tesco), however my son complained to him one night about that (he drives me down from Swindon so doesn't drink) and he always gets a can, but if it's a rum and coke you are after it still comes out of the bottle.  He only keeps two bitters, one lager and guinness.  However, he does keep it in good order, but woe betide anybody who complains about the beer - he usually takes a gulp out of it and passes it back saying there is nothing wrong with it!  Gets full on a Friday evening and Sunday lunchtime but quiet the rest of the time!  Kicked the darts teams out, wasn't worth putting on food for them he said, and is generally a miserable fucker!!  Did you know he actually owns those fields that are opposite your in-laws.  Tried to get housing on there several times but always turned down!  Happy days, sounds just the place for a TEF piss-up!! :beers:

Sonic has been keeping a low profile in flood stricken Bampton, and who can blame him.......there's much work to be done.

The lawn needs cutting for starters, but to be fair, it is a little damp.

Taken from the met office site:

Forecast for the remainder of Summer 2007
The forecast update below is based on latest indications for the remainder of summer (i.e. until the end of August).

Temperature
Near average temperatures are likely to continue for the rest of July. However, during August there are signs of a change of weather type, with an indication that most regions will experience some periods with above average temperatures.

Precipitation
Above-average rainfall is likely to continue in most regions for the rest of July and at first in August. For the remainder of August current indicators favour a trend to drier-than-normal conditions for most of the UK.

So thats alright then  :)
