Well quite. But probably had some links to the area surely? Doubt it. Some people just really want to go to places like that, and for some the danger adds an extra edge. A related thing that used to annoy me was older travellers always telling me they'd been to Afghanistan in the 60's or 70's, and that it was really safe then.
