Summer holidays that went on for ever (and it never seemed to rain).

Fishing at Daniels Well in Malmesbury.

About £15 for a season ticket at the local swimming pool.

And the drugs used to work.

No nanny politics, no overbearing state and being free to do whatever the fuck I wanted within the (open and reasonably un-bothered) law.

Shit.

You've either fundamentally misunderstood the term "childhood" or you were way too intense as a kid. And probably wore a crushed velvet all-in-one suit with frilly ruffs at the wrists. Which would explain a lot, thinking about it.

Another genius way we found was to ride over an empty coke can which would kind of clamp its way around the tyre and then wedge itself between the rear forks. Made an ace sound.

Not so good though if you managed to pierce the can. I went through countless puncture repair kits.

being a Calney we used to go there all the time - I went the other day to that family fun day and looked at the death slide and its really not as scary as I remember!

I also miss going in my best friends dads bubble car

Not being a local lad I used to get so much shit being a Town fan, for pretty much the entire Prem season I went into school on Monday mornings to find the black-board covered in whatever horrific result we'd endured at the weekend.

I used to wish so much that I could live in Swindon so I wouldn't have to endure all that, the Stevenage game was the worst - I really wasn't looking forward to the ribbing that game was sure to bring about.

I think it was all a good test of character now I look back at it.

Yeah, now it does...

I didn't want to have to think about what my parents would do with me if I were a panther, what I'd do for food - would I eat people?  Where would I sleep?

It was all too much.

- playing bulldog! and getting told in assembly every week we wern't allowed to play bulldog so changing the name of it everyweek so we wouldn't get told off!
- my best friend moving to NYC and me being allowed to go vist her in summer holidays on my own
- getting up at 6am on a weekend so you could watch your favourite children's tv show on tv! i used to get up at something stupid like 5:35am just so i could watch the magic school bus!!  :?
- sitting in assembly on the floor and fighting with the person next to you, so you would have your knee on top of their leg, not their leg on top of yours!!! (please tell me you did that too!?!)
- being the fastest runner in school
- 'golden time' on a friday afternoon, and being put in the 'black book' if you were naughty and then having to watch everyone else have golden time whilst you sat there!
- lego! i had so many lego models in my room, i remember a fire station and an under water ship thing! complete with seaweed!
- the famous five!! and then trying to go on adventures like them with your friends!
- getting annuals of your favourite shows every christmas
- being scared of father christmas and never getting any sleep on christmas eve because i was terrified of him!!!

you didn't get golden time?! it was on a friday afternoon, if you'd been good you got to go play outside, read a book or paint or something like that, and if you were naughty your name got put in the book and you had to sit and watch everyone have fun!

When you sat on the floor in assembly cross legged and you knee would under the other person's leg which was uncomfy so you'd try and get your knee on top of their leg  :soapy tit wank:

Yeah, although subbuteo seems like a sweet memory, I don't remember ever actually finishing a game. It normally ended up into some sort of made up game like trying to throw the balls in the goal from across the room - which was harder than it sounds as those things bounce a bit.

oh OK,  thanks for clearing up "golden time", I guess we had it but didn't call it that. The assembly thing - I genuinely don't remember the issue, we must have had a bigger "personal space"!

My list, there must be a million things. None of which I can remember now:

- Trying to copy the trick we saw on "BMX beat" using nothing but a brick and a plank of wood to create a ramp - but normally settling for  putting your front brake on and impressing you mates with your 'endo'
- School (holidays) TV that was crap but you watched it anyway - Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn , Annie, etc, etc.
- After School TV that was actually quite good - Grange Hill (zammo, gonch, cleever and before that Tucker et al), Dogtanian, uleseyes, Mysterious cities of gold, knightmare  (might have been a bit old to watch  a few of them   I have a younger sister)
- Playing football and cricket out the back, 6 and out rules if you hit the ball over the garden. Trying not to kick the football over "Tippers" fence as he never gave them back (wanker).
- Kick the can, chain gang,  etc - ip dip dog shit to see who was 'it'.
- Crap family holidays camping/caravanning in whatever the wettest part of England was at the time. Actually I don't miss that at all.
-Delivering free papers for some stupid low amount of pocket money. The paper bag was sooooo heavy that Heathrow baggage handlers would be prevented by H&S from picking it up.
- Going to 'youth club', usually getting board and sneaking off to the Abbey Grounds where the smokers and drinkers were.

lobbing eggs at ridgeway kids from the bus.
the whole class humming in a deaf teachers lesson.
being able to have a scrap and not ending up in court.
having about 20 of us going into a shop at once and filling our pockets.

Ha ha!

Or miming in same teachers lessons so he turned his hearing aid up and then shouting!

ha, wrestlecrap at its finest!

Funnily enough I went into my old junior school to pick up some flyers and it was only the same secretary in the office from when I was there.

So I was chatting to her for a bit and mentioned what teachers I used to have, and it turns out the teacher I had in year 4 still works at the school.

So the secretary took my to the classroom to see if she remembered me.

bought back millions of memories that did!

I've thought long and hard about this and the best I can come up with is....

When I was little, and my mum and dad used to bring us home, from the weekly shop, a can of Shandy bass each, in the larger than normal blue cans.  I used to love that stuff.  Felt like a grown up drinking that.
