Town could be the quiet men

MARK Cooper is hoping his players will relish playing in the big stadium atmosphere of Valley Parade when Swindon Town visit tomorrow.

Can someone explain this bit to me?

Quote from: Mark Cooper
It’s not always playing a big one against a big one for the sake of it. We might think whoever our biggest one is can’t deal with Hanson aerially anyway, because he’s that good in the air we might pick a smaller one.

Something about a 90s pop group and a TV aerial. I don't think he can get very good reception.

Think he's saying that Hanson will probably win flick on's against whoever we put against him, so use the centre halves to mark the Intended targets where they'll get more chance to clear.

I think you are right, but it doesn't hurt to mark him with a bigger player who may be able to beat him in the air but he is one of the best target men in this league.

Apparently Yeovil beat them last week by packing the midfield with 3 central midfielders with some pace and Bradford couldn't deal with that......sounds ideal.

Tomorrow will be a good test....first of the away games v a norvern hoofball team, and there's plenty of them this season.

You would think our 'style' is perfectly set up to counter hoofball.

I'm expecting a win

But our defence is very inexperienced, and may not cope too well under the barrage.  I'm expecting a defeat  :)

Before a barrage can start they have to get the ball. no one has managed to do that with any regularity against us this season. I'd take a point but quietly confident of a win.

I read on the Bradford Forum that if Swindon play football they will play us off the park as with Hanson in the side, their tactic is to lump it up to him.

Quietly confident.

Someone said Iraq were playing on Sunday, is Yaser back? We have good cover in midfield with Reeves ready to step in and Rogers back in training.

Bradford will put a big side out, sit back & try to bully us, I'm sure of that. Just got to hope we can find a killer touch in the final third!

I'm wary of what is known in Spain, as the FIFA virus, namely your big players come back from international breaks, either with their heads in the clouds, or knackered out by jet lag.  Under these circumstances your usual nurturers of possession, make more concessions than a No, Westminster politician in Glasgow.

Iraq under 23's are starting their Asian Games campaign. Yaser should be back as he's too old.

Reg's Comic Book Hero

I always liked the Silver Surfer...mainly from the rarity value, but was a big fan of the Mighty Thor. Forever People from the DC franchise showed promise.

My first loss of potentially valuable comics occured at Clarence St school, when the bag of comics which I'd steadily acquired from a stall in the old Market, was confiscated as being inimical to an English schoolboy's moral well being and destroyed....how times change.

We've won 5 of the last 25 away league games, and lost 13....as I said it's a good test, but expecting to lose is just facing facts.

Yes Reg. Because form never changes, does it?

Clearly our form needs to change, if a sortie on the high end of the table is to be achieved....which is why I say it's a good test.

Louis Thompson in his little bit in the Adver, feels that we've turned the corner away from home, so now time to prove it...just that I've been long enough a Town fan to know that sometimes words don't match deeds, so no expectation on my part.

If you want to believe we're about to go on an 85/86 style run, then fine, don't let me stop you.

Did I say that? No, no I didn't.

In our last 10 competitive away games we have lost 4, drawn 3 and won 3. Going by YOUR logic, a loss is the LEAST likely result. You see, I can manipulate facts to my liking as well.

I am of course stating the obvious by saying our away form was the issue last season and being honest, I have seen no incomings to rectify that - I was hoping for some experienced heads to be brought in.

Frustratingly, I can see this season playing out exactly as the last one did.

I'm quite at home with Reg's approach. I think of myself as an optimistic sort of person, but I always go into away games expecting to lose, not only because that's statistically the most common outcome, but also so as:

A) to be pleasantly surprised by a better outcome;
B) to mitigate my despondency when we lose;
C) to avoid appearing hubristic.

Works for me. Don't know why it should upset anyone else.

Have you ever considered a job in a Tory government?  Your manipulation would seem well suited.

The only thing that fecked us last season was those shite 10 odd games before the Stephens/Troy combo.

Cutting that down to just an average run should see us in the top 6

Had we we won at 3 of the 4 relegated clubs we'd have made the PO's.

We may need to have a look at the Stephen/Turnball/Thompson triumverate, before we get too carried away.

On that, Reg, I agree.

But if it is too soon to be confident, then how is it not too soon to be pessimistic? How is it reasonable to expect a loss, but not reasonable to expect a win or a draw?

No he doesn't. Reg is right to remain cautious until and unless we start building a good away record. It's not slagging off our team to say that it's too early to expect an away win. Everyone knows our team, and especially our back three, are still familiarising themselves with their roles.

And without wishing to piss on anyone's bonfires, this time last year everyone was similarly excited about our sexy football, which subsequently evaporated away from home between about mid-Sep till March.

There's a significant difference between being cautious and predicting the negative. And has anybody stated that they expect an away win? It's a strawman fallacy.

Of course he is right, what gives anybody the right to be grumpy but not the right to be optimistic?

Its an opinion.

This is not about facts its about opinions, why is yours and Reg's more valid than anyone elses?
