For me the Doge, was the leader of the historic  and powerful state of Venice....perhaps the most notorious, being the 13th Century Enrico Dandalo, who at the age of 90 and blind led the 4th Crusade on a mission to reclaim Jerusalem from the Musulmen for Christianity....problem was they ran out of dosh, and decided to sack Christian Byzantine instead to fund the operation..thus driving a wedge ever since between eastern and western Christianity, and in time allowing the occupation of the Balkans by the Ottomans.
