Squash is pretty intensive, otherwise swimming or running.

Swimming and walking.

get a pedometer and make sure you walk at least 10,000 paces a day - more if you can - easy if you walk the dog a bit extra.

After that, the dull bit is working out a calorie controlled diet and sticking to it.

Tonsillitis and gastritis is pretty good for weight loss, just under a stone lost in a week!

Calculate your BMR: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

Work out your daily calorie need: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/

Subtract 500 from your daily need and aim to eat that many calories per day.

A deficit of around 3500 calories per week is equal to 1lb of weight loss.

I need to lose about half a stone to get my BMI back under 25. That should be easy once I am working 5 days a week again, as I won't be in the house snacking so much.

All natural, but help you cut down portion size. I still play football and squash and these help speed up metabolism. I've lost two stone in 2 months.

Shin splints are a real pain (literally) and are the main reason I took up cycling because I just couldn't run any decent distance. Stretching my calf muscles for 20 minutes or so before running helped a little but just delayed the onset of the pain for a little longer really. If I'd stuck to the stretching exercises a bit more and bought some decent shoes & orthotics I probably could've cured it.

Get fitted for proper running shoes at Run Swindon in Old Town

Start off by the run/walk programme for beginners on the Runners World website - you soon progress, just stay with it.

And as soon as you stop taking the pills the caffeine & phenylalanine works its way out of your system, your metabolism slows again and the weight piles back on.

No but it comes with a free sample of their other product. A powder which you mix with water before 'working out'. That stuff is mental and spaces you out. Not to be had 5 hours before sleep!

This - and avoid high impact stuff like running until you have lost a bit. Walking more might not sound very macho, but it will do the trick and start getting your heart ready for the more strenuous stuff.

The pre-workout drinks are mad. The amounts of stimulants in them I would take for a good time, not to boost energy.

Have you not considered that you just eating smaller portions may have been the main contributor to your weight loss?

The pre-workout drinks are mad. The amounts of stimulants in them I would take for a good time, not to boost energy.

Makes me laugh the amount of people you see in a gym pouring gallons of calorific energy drinks down their necks, do 30 minutes on the treadmill and leave having probably ingested more calories than they've expended.

Anything under two hours and you really don't need any supplements. Water for hydration and that's it. Over two hours maybe some high GI carbs like a banana or an energy gel and then maybe an electrolyte replacement drink after the workout.

The only people who should be taking drinks/supplements before workouts are those looking to build muscle.

I have lost 7 stone since January, tried for years to lose weight and pretty much fucked my bowel up through years of eating shit like kebabs, cakes, chocolate etc. 3 take aways a week was the norm, Rustler burgers, crisps, cake, choc bars for lunch, I was a proper obese wobbler.

Weight Watchers is just a paid support group, don't waste your cash on it. I have lost my weight by walking and walking, and even more walking. Obviously a dramatic change of diet was necessary but I didn't realise there is so much stuff I enjoy that I can eat loads of. I eat chocolate and crisps every day and the weight still comes off.

Just keep walking, its free, you don't have to look like a sweaty heffer down the gym and you get to discover parts of our town that I never knew existed before. Good luck

Walking is probably the most effective long term, like someone said its free and if you go off the beaten track you'll see things you didn't know existed. Swimming is also very good for weight loss and because of the low impact you'll be losing weight and feeling fitter after no time at all. A close friend of mine lost 3 stone by going swimming every other day for half an hour and also used a technique he heard about which was chewing every mouthful of food he ate 20 times, he said after a few days he was eating much smaller portions.

I need the discipline of a weekly weigh in and a proper plan to follow.I've tried countless times to do it without and I just lose heart.

Cutting down/ out on drink should have a huge effect on you losing weight if you've been a regular drinker. A lot of people who stop drinking lose loads of weight without changing their other lifestyle habits.

Title: Re: Whats the best exercise for weightloss
Post by: Samdy Gray on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 20:26:53
If you're already that active and you're not shifting weight then it can only be due to what you're eating/drinking. Booze is massively calorific. At roughly 200 calories a pint, a 5 pint session is the best part of 50% of your daily intake.

It might seem boring and nerdy, but calorie counting is going to be the best way for you to lose weight.

Walk further or faster. Cycle further or faster in a higher gear.

Weight loss is 90% will power and 10% actually doing it. Just think that it probably took years of over indulging for you to get to the weight your at. It's going to take an equally long period of time to shift that weight in a sustainable manner. You need to change your lifestyle and your mindset.

It's a great incentive once you've lost that first bit of weight and family and friends notice and tell you so. You'll probably feel really proud of yourself and keep to a strict routine to gain more compliments for that feel Good factor. Best of luck whichever method you go with.

I was the same for years, it took me a week in hospital to realise I could do it. Sometimes the counting of every single calorie and every gram of fat can get quite obsessive, it works for some but not for others.

My wife does that on her phone, its bloody good, you tell it what exercise you have done and what grub you have scoffed and it keeps a track on what you are eating and how many calories you have burned off (which is great if you have just done a long walk or something). You can also see the profiles of 40st yankie rednecks to help you feel a bit better about yourself

It's all about balance with eating/drinking. I eat heathily and don't booze during the week and let loose over the weekend with a few pints and calorie-laden food at the week.

Gardening is a surprising good workout, it's amazing how many calories you burn tidying the place up.

Title: Re: Whats the best exercise for weightloss
Post by: Samdy Gray on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 21:13:50
Things that helped to motivate me:

- Keep a food/exercise diary. Firstly it helps you to understand what you're putting in your mouth and the calories it contains. It's surprising what you might consider a 'healthy' diet of sugary breakfast cereal, supermarket sandwich + crisps, bottle of drink and then a dinner of processed food actually contains. Secondly it gives you a daily target and makes it easier to stick to when it's actually written down/visible on an app/spreadsheet.

- Set goals. 1lb or 2lb a week is healthy, so losing a stone in 6 to 8 weeks is achievable. When you reach your goal, set a new one. Reward yourself each time you achieve a goal.

- Stop looking at food as something to make you feel good. It isn't, it's fuel. Yes, a treat every now and then is nice, but meat & veg is much better fuel for the body than pizza & chips. Don't buy junk food/snacks when you go shopping. If it's not in the house, you can't eat it.

- Get yourself a set of digital scales that measure by each ¼ lb and weigh yourself daily, first thing in the morning. This was a huge motivator for me, getting out of bed everyday to see how much I lost really spurred me on (and continues to do so) to keep going.

- Measure yourself weekly. Even just taking a waist measurement can be a good motivator. It's surprising how what you might consider small weight loss actually equates to in inches off your waist.

- Find an exercise that you enjoy. For me, I really got into cycling to the extent that I now look forward to getting out on the bike and don't see exercise as a chore.

And yes, it can be flattering if other people give you compliments, but I'm not doing it for their benefit I'm doing it for myself.

It can and does work with perseverance. I'm now just short of 3 stone off of my heaviest and 4 inches off my waist.

Hey Yeo, just starting my change in diet today. Last time I found changing what you eat far more important than exercise, but the latter helped. Dropped 3 1/2 stone. The problem was I slowly returned to my crap eating pattern.

Weightwatchers worked for me (without the meetings), but I was 99.9% disciplined. Just trying to eat the right things this time without points. Might not work, but the weight loss chart is up on the bathroom wall, so I'll monitor it and see. Target 2lbs a week.

Title: Re: Whats the best exercise for weightloss
Post by: Samdy Gray on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 21:36:50
Good luck Batch.

Are you combining that with exercise too? 2lbs per week is -1000 cals per day (as I'm sure you know) and getting by on just 1000 cals won't be much fun.

Title: Re: Whats the best exercise for weightloss
Post by: Batch on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 21:39:31
Yes, I have mudguards on my bike as of yesterday. I reckon I can do 1000 cals on 13 miles. Might only be 3 times a week mind.

And no I didn't realise it was as much as -1000 cals a day. So exercise is much more important than I thought. Thanks for pointing it out (genuinely).

I lost a fair bit of weight a while back just by cutting out all the really bad stuff (chocolate, crisps, snacks), doing about an hour a day in the gym and still eating what I wanted (pizza, curry etc). Worked for me. Except I've put it back on again.

Keep meaning to start again but haven't got round to it.

Dont buy the Weight Watchers sausages, they are vile and way beyond human consumption. If you like a sausage and dont want to compromise on the taste of a juicy Cumberland then go to Sainsburys and get The be Good To Yourself Cumberland Sausages. Weight Watchers do some fantastic Yoghurts, currently 4 for a quid in Asda. If you like chocolate try Dark Kit Kats or a few squares of Bourneville, dark chocolate has a more satisfying effect on the brain. If you like crispy type snacks, the obvious are the Snack a Jacks, although Jacols have just come out with a baked crisp type thing called Oddities, The Smokey bacon ones are wonderful, and very low on fat and calories!  :I'm a complete mofleakin Deak

I have got brilliant results using the 5:2 diet combined with healthy eating.

I eat nothing with any more than 5% fat, have cut out all alcohol and eat a strict 2,500 to 2,700 calories per day for 5 days a week, then 2 days a week that are not next to each other...I use Monday and Thursday...I eat no more than 600 calories per day. It's difficult at the start but persevere with it and the rewards are well worth it. Make sure you drink at least 2 litres of fluid per day, low sugar drinks obviously.

And as most of you know on here I am almost unable to do any exercise due to severe ongoing health problems but the weight loss is pretty dramatic.

I started the diet 9 weeks ago and have lost 14 kilos so far which equates to about 3 pounds per week for a total loss so far of about 2 and a quarter stone.

Obviously I need to lose more than probably any one else on here and because of my imposed sedentary lifestyle I am pretty strict with myself on it.

Mine is also being monitored by the doctor every week but he has stated that this has to be considered as a new way of life and not a diet and I am happy to continue on it, with failing health and being just the wrong side of 45 I thought it was time I did something.

EDIT: stike that, I just weighed in and its 15 and a half kilos in 9 weeks so its 2 and a half stone :)

I can recommend being given jobs to do around the house as a good way to lose weight and get fit. I cycle to work every day now and shifting gravel and soil etc has helped burn the calories :)

I hate to say this but Paul Mckennas approach to weight loss is pretty spot on :

- Drink loads of water
- eat when you are hungry
- Eat slolwly, chewing properly with no distractions like tv etc.

Add in a measure of exercise and it should be easy.

Biggest problem for me its the kids treat drawer - handy for when I think I am peckish.

Also when I train at a high intenisty (50 -100 + miles per week) for triathlons etc I eat to fuel myself and I find that when I train at a lower intensity I lose more weight. Go figure.

I actually quit drinking during the week a couple of months back. It was actually much, much easier than I expected it to be. It was quite refreshing and I felt better for it.

The (only) problem was that without a beer inside me I was having trouble sleeping so had to get back on it for a nightcap, I just can't work if I don't get enough sleep. Going to try it again in the not too distant future only this time with exercise as well to (hopefully) help me get over the sleeping issue.

I've been running a lot over the past 3 months, averaging about 30 miles p/week and over 40 in some. Cut out most of my snackage and all midweek drinking, with only a few weekend nights out in that time. Still only managed to lose 2kg. Hovering slightly above the overwieght BMI marker. I want to be under by christmas, but it's chuffing hard!

Whatever I do I cannot seem to put on weight (then again I do walk 6 miles a day) - any tips to gain weight?
Other than pies & pints  :)

Simply eat more, and lift some weights
what you eat is up to you, some people get away with eating shit, like kfc and junk food, but work hard in the gym, a safer bet, is high (good) fat food, peanut butter is a big favourit amongst people trying to bulk up, its also been know for people to take a couple of spoons on certain cooking oils in a bit to rank up their fat/calorie intake

People wanting to bulk up are going against their natural state. Accept you are thin and be happy that others are trying desperately to be like you.

Damn right arriba. In my teens/20s I was lucky if I tipped the scales at 10st wringing wet and (as a teenager) used to worry I was skinny. I'd kill to be back like that now :)

Ive realised, in my grand old middle age, that I had some sort of body image problem when I was a teen.  I always thought I was a lardarse but now looking back at pics from then I was a skinny beanpole.  Then I buggered up me knee, carried on drinking in earnest and piled on the lard.

My mid life crisis is in full swing Im trying to get back into some semblance of shape.  Been going to the gym, when I can, for the last year and a half and trying to eat better.

That myfitnesspal thing is really useful, as is just writing an honest diary of what goes in yer mush everyday.  You'd be amazed how much you eat and how much you just forget you're eating.

In answer to the original question, any cardio exercise from walking to rowing, added to eating more healthily, cutting down on carbs and fats will make a big dent in your stores of fat.

Mind you Im still 17.5 stone with an excess of fat in the stomach department, but I do feel Im going in the right direction.

Sounds like you're on the right track Saxondale. Seems like half the people I know are using that myfitnesspal thing these days - one of my work colleagues tried to warn everyone here that it's just a big marketing scam to gather loads of information about people's eating habits they could then sell on to supermarkets. Until someone pointed out that it would be a self-selected database of the fat, middle-aged and self-obsessed which might not perhaps be Tesco's core target market :)

Ill take that as a backhanded compliment Paul.

Lets have a race!

Im 17stone  10 and 1/2 :o

How's it going Yeo? Weighed in a 16st 13 this morning, which would be a 7lb loss.  Bit sceptical the scales are wrong :) But I've been living on a lot of Batchelor's pot shots for lunch as they only area about 170 cals, plus cut down take away a lot.

Trying to, not been out much in the last month but the mudguards are useful! Must get back in the saddle, so to speak.

Mudguards?! Wimp. Getting muddy is the fun bit. Should've seen the state of me when I got back from my jaunt up The Ridgeway last Sunday :)

My weight pretty much stayed the same during October because I had a few weeks off the bike. Dropping again now I'm back to putting the miles in.

This weight loss is going to cost me a small fortune in new clothes though.

I've lost nearly 2 stone. Clothes are a nightmare! But good to find in the bargains/sales though as most people can't fit into them!

Yeah, sure. You're first in at old folks' clothes stalls at the jumble sales, aren't you? Fess up!

I've just had that virus that seems to be doing the rounds...lost a few pounds at the start of the week.  Not a pleasant way to do it, but it works...

The problem is I only get out at lunch time, the boss gets grumpy if you traipse mud through the office (showers are top floor).

But I am a wimp.
