I thought the horns were fine. I expected them to piss me off, but they create a fantastic atmosphere. I might've needed the nurofen if I was actually at the game, but give me that over our pathetic effort at Wembley any day.

Yeah it would be much better if everyone sits there in virtual silence for 90 mins, a bit like 20,000 people did at Wembley a couple of weeks ago ;)

It's what they do in South Africa.  It's the South African World Cup.  We should adjust and enjoy it.  But no, we just moan.

"Oh no, it's different from what I'm used to - how will I cope?"

If you don't like it, turn the volume down.  Otherwise, go with it.

Shame, I quite like you.  I thought we could have something.  It'll take me a while, but I think I'll get over you.

Seriously, do they annoy people that much?  I've got used to them already - if you can't watch a football match without full concentration on the commentary, are you not focusing on the wrong thing?  As long as you can see what's going on on the pitch, you are watching the match.

What i dont understand is why the south africans think they are so fucking great or is it they are just easily amused,I bet those yanks were blowing them last night too.

I find it easy to tune out from them, however I can see the annoyance.  I don't really understand who goes to a game not to watch it but to blow a fucking horn for 90 minutes.

Also 2 notes rather than 1 droning on all game may be a little more entertaining.

Yawn. Moaning for the sake of moaning. I barely even notice them. Have you ever watched football from abroad before? This is hardly new. Embrace another culture.

I accept that the vuvuzela is part of South African culture and therefore part of this world cup, but they are relentless and drown out any crowd noise. It wouldn't be so bad if it was only the South African fans using them at their matches, but everyone has them at every match.

They aren't spoiling the games for me, but I do think the atmosphere would be better if they weren't there, I like to be able to hear the fans singing.

I agree that they were much louder for the SA game, but even in the game now with the stadium only half full, it's all you can really hear and they don't stop.

Deeply ingrained into the psyche of the S. African people and woven tightly into the very fabric of African culture though, of course.

Should have all had them at Wembley. They would have made a lot more fucking noise than the 20'000 or so "plastic" town fans present that day.

But then as well as moaning about people swearing / standing up / drunk / singing / shouting / not being able to see, they would have been fucking bleating about being to noisy as well!

We should have all had one and then when the "plastic" next to you started moaning, you could have shoved it straight up his arse / down his fucking throat.

Your argument is based on the fact they are part of a 'football fan culture' rather than the fact they sound good or bad.

It'd be like saying castration was fine just because it is part of tribe culture.

Just because something happens it doesn't mean we have to accept it.

Ah well. I guess you'll just have to hope they get banned then. I just don't have a problem with them, the noise they make, the affect it has on the precious commentators. If more players come out and complain about them then fair enough. But their concerns seem to be with the ball.

Oh great, these bloody things already seem to have robbed the world cup grounds of atmosphere, anyone actually heard a decent chant or song yet? Not even the England fans. All we can hear is this bloody sound, why aren't people at the ground watching the football? Yes, i know, moan, groan, miserable old sod etc etc, but, it is the world cup and the only thing that is, so far worse than the bloody Vuvuzela's (forget Rob greens error for a second) has been the total lack of enthusiasm from any of the TV commentators.

Ban the Vuvuzela, lets hear the fans sining, the korean drums and, even, God help me, the England band.

Phew, not a bad rant for a Sunday morning

The thought of having a blast on one in the Arkells next season (the section above the prawn-sandwich block that stinks of piss) makes me smile - that'd wake a few of the miserable old fuckers up..........or finish some of them off possibly.

I haven't caught much of it as I try my best to miss it. But from what I've seen so far it seems pretty much the same as MOTD2 which is typical of ITV - totally devoid of originality, just nick a presenter and copy the format.

Despite what the tabs would have you believe, the World Cup is not exclusively about England or even the Premiership. England aside (I'm increasingly with you on that), it's a bloody great tournament and I don't understand how any football fan could not want to watch as much of it as they could.

[disclaimer]This is solely my opinion, I don't claim it has any validity outside of my own ears and I am in no way seeking to disparage anyone else's chosen method of watching/enjoying football and/or blowing big plastic trumpets[/disclaimer]

Agreed.  It's football - from across the world.  I don't see how any football fan wouldn't be fascinated.  If I could watch every single match, not missing a minute, I would.  In fact, four years ago I did exactly that.  Unfortunately, I'm now a grown up, and will be working through many of the games.  I cannot imagine choosing to not watch a game though.

Paul, that assumes that all 'football fans' are absolute. As in if you drive past a park where a bunch of 10 year olds are playing with jumpers for goals you will pull over and watch.

Why does being a 'fan' make you an extremist who must watch football at every opportunity? That's like saying that because I like Indian food, I had also better like Chinese, Italian, Spanish etc. Or if I am passionate about my old British motorbike then I should cream my boxers over every new exotic piece of metal dreamed up by Ducati.

Nope. I am a fan of Swindon Town. It stops there. I'm happy with it. Ok?

Absolutely fine. Which is why I put in the disclaimer bit saying that was just how I felt and should be taken as having no more validity than that. I find your attitude puzzling tbh but no more so than I do people who don't like football. I don't understand them, they don't understand me, doesn't make either one "right" or "wrong". Can the broadcasters block out the sound of the vuvuzuelas and just have the commentary going? I suppose the media have a massive centre at all these stadiums and BBC/ITV teams have got seats reserved and so they wouldn't be prepared to do this.

Yes, the WC is in South Africa, but it's not just about them, but also the other 31 nations competing. The WC is all about hearing and experiencing contrasting cultures and sounds at different matches. At the moment all we can hear is horns and nothing else even when South Africa is not playing.

Compromise needed.  These things should be banned for the first 15 mins of each game across the board.  Anyone blowing one would be ejected immediately.

And then, 15 minutes in, if the atmosphere feels like it did at Wembley two weeks ago...bring out the fog horns and let rip.

I don't think people are complaining because the noise is different, more that it's bloody tedious and annoying.

Drums are part of our football culture, yet most of us complain about the noise they make too - because they're monotonous and annoying not because they are different to what we're used to.

But yeah, if the people that don't mind them want to make up arguments about not accepting a different atmosphere then let them.

I'm still going to watch as many games as I can with or without the vuvuzelas, because whilst I find them irritating I'm watching the world cup primarily to see the football*

Van Persie could have been sent off today for kicking the ball away, and he arguably got away with it because of his claims that he didn't hear the ref's whistle when he kicked the ball away because of the vuvuzelas.

Ok, so he got away with it because the ref bottled it, but the argument shouldn't even be there. If players are allowed to claim they can't hear the ref's whistle over the vuvuzelas then they shouldn't be there.

Thinking ahead to next season at the County Ground, we really need to nip this one in the bud.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2010/jun/14/bbc-vuvuzela-free-world-cup

At the same time, fans in Britain have been snapping up the horns at the rate of one every two seconds and suppliers claimed the UK had been gripped by "vuvuzela fever".

"Vuvuzelas are here to stay and will never be banned," said Rich Mkhondo, a spokesman for the local World Cup organising committee. "People love the vuvuzelas around the world. Only a minority are against vuvuzelas."

The Premier League and the Football League said there was nothing in their rules to stop supporters bringing them to English grounds but the decision would rest with individual clubs.

"There is a good chance they will end up in our grounds because people will bring them back from the World Cup," said a Football League spokesman. "It is a matter for individual clubs, as is the case with drums and other musical instruments."

These could spread around English grounds like Japanese Knotweed.

Ha ha no offence taken Ben, I didn't read it until this morning and anyway it's not like I'm the sort of person to take petty retribution by deliberately voting against your teams in the Stunners World cup or anything.....

Heard this on the wireless the other day.  It's terrific.  He's done another one previously called the World Cup song, I'm sure someone can find it on youtube.

Well the BBC have reacted by dubbing their own crowd effects over the Spain/Switzerland game this afternoon. I was suspicious for a bit but it became blatantly obvious when the Swiss scored, & after that I could just tell how unnatural it all was, ie no change of sound whatsoever when Alonso crashed his shot against the bar, & the same for other near misses.

For me this now means that what we are getting feels removed from what is happening - we are no longer getting the TRUE experience. There are options on the red button which I'll look at from now on. I appreciate that a lot of people would rather anything than the vuvuzelas, but all I want to come across to me is what is actually happening in the stadium - and that means sight AND sound.

The same appears to be happening during the South Africa match. You can hear the vuvuzelas but nowhere near the level heard previously, especially as it's SA playing.

No bollocks to any of the fake shit. Give us what's actually happening or don't bother. If people are easily irritated then that's their fucking problem.

Cheeky little twat! I've been to quite a few tournaments over the last 20 years, so I've already had the pleasure thanks. How about I tell you what to do instead - if you don't like what the horns sound like turn your fucking volume down. Right, that's as far as I'm getting involved with this subject on here.

I'm with One F on this. People just like a good moan. If someone was banging a drum for 90 mins constantly people would moan at that. Silencing the 'atmosphere' doesn't feel like it's actually happening.

Of course people would moan about a drum, because it's such a fucking annoying constant noise.

I do however think that due to drums being so common that I find them easier to tune out of. In fact I'm noticing the same with the trumpets.

Saying that: drums; horns; vuvuzelas. Any of these in the county ground week in week out would drive me insane.

I love my team. Just meh about everything else. Premiership, England blah blah blah.

And a wise decision too.

As Barry said...

It's funny how i think those players deserve booing and abuse, yet no matter how bad Swindon play i'd never boo them or give them abuse. Clearly I love Swindon and England can fuck off when it comes to the crunch, which has enabled me to get some perspective on that toothless, gutless excuse for football.

Again, I think you've missed the point TT. You're confusing the World Cup with England (much like the national press). I usually enjoy the World Cup despite England, not because of them

Fair enough Paul. But just like being disinterested because I have no connection to a team in the premiership, I don't watch it.
