Any italians killed by these supporters last night, after years of trouble by these same fans???

No?  Then I doubt UEFA will ban them from Europe, quite rightly too.

Now then I assume Ruud V N was not flagged offside as the italian defender who was behind the goal line technically was still in play as to leave the field of play you should ask for permission to leave the pitch.

The funny thing is though Magic they didn't even mention Panucci, and on the digital replay thing they use Panucci wasn't even on there.

I see that the officials are now stating that the goal was, as expected, given due to Christian Panucci being behind the goal.

Dreadful media coverage on this Virgin Radio, BBC (in their main match report and minute by minute coverage), ITV, The Guardian all showing a terrible lack of knowledge on the subject.

that was a great match.

and easily the most mistakes david pleat has made in a single game, comedy gold. some of the names he was coming out with!

italy were "absolutely shocking" in defence. Holland looked decent but I wouldn't get too carried away, they are definitely in with a good chance of winning but Italy rolled over and died.

Do Camoranesi, Pirlo, Toni etc. ever turn it on in big matches??

some beefy tackles and some blatant play-acting, the ref looked dodgy and seemed to let some rash challenges go, yet punish others which weren't as bad.

Overall great to watch, and two textbook counter-attacks from the Dutch.

He just never seem's to do much but i guess Donadoni thought it would be best to play all 3 of Milan's midfielders together for some strange reason!?

I would have bought on Aquilani as soon as they went 2-0 down, he's an attack minded midfielder with a great shot on him.

Oooooooooh!!!!!!

This is turning into another good match.  Not saying this to wind people up but some of the football on display in the last couple of days has highlighted to me that england (and Scotland) have a lot of catching up to do.

Sven's years (and MacLaren's years) of softly softly football will take a while to get over, as will the dreaded Berti years for us.

Some of these matches are being played at a hell of a pace.

I feel bad for Austria - the team that didn't have the faith of their own supporters.

Thinking about it - in their 2 games thus far they've conceded two preventable goals then performed in a pretty decent manner. The effort is there but the quality hasn't.

Bascially they haven't been the worst team in this competition.

We haven't had a decent ref from England since the Wolves butcher Jack Taylor got the 74 WC final.....our recent reps Mike Riley, just dull shit and Graham Pollska, at least so bad he's now a cult.

Don't agree with that call Reg, if time is up when the corner was taken then time is up, this stupid modern day the ball has to be in the middle of the pitch for the match to be over is awful.  Good on Clive for calling time when he did.

If im reading it right, (cant remember the incident and cant be arsed to look it up) THen the goal should stand. Time should be extended for corners. The corner is only over once the ball is cleared away.

Bollocks STA!!  Why should time be extended for corners?  I think (pretty sure) that the only part of the game (by law) that has to be extended is the taking of a penalty, other than that no matter what's going on if time is up then time is up.

Clive blew the whistle as the corner had been floated over, therefore no goal!!!

Correct Jan.

That rule was bought in in the early 1900's after a penalty was given in the last minute, and the ball was kicked out of the stadium, and the ref blew up before they could find the ball.

The rules were then changed that the game can be extended for a penalty kick to be taken.

Title: Euros Thread
Post by: reeves4england on Friday, June 13, 2008, 15:38:12
I always thought that as long as the ball was in play, the ref could blow the final whistle. Which is why refs are allowed to call time as the ball goes out for a goal kick/corner/throw, and also straight after a gk/corner/throw has been taken if he gives one

Title: Euros Thread

England not being there makes it easier to sit back and enjoy the football i think.Means not having to worry about who gets through and who we might or might not play in the next rounds.

I'm hoping Germany will slip up, but they'll probably do it playing a brand of football not to dissimilar to our own (Apart from they win things).

Ideally I'd like the Dutch to win, based on their first two game. I've also got a feeling Croatia could get quite close................

talking about games missed, missed the first 20 mins of the Croatia- Germany game as i was coming back from Valencia. I thouht the Spanish were quite lucky tonight. shame that Sweden lost Ibrahimovic at h/t. But the dutch impressed me last night, they destroyed the French and Sneijder has to be player of the tournament so far.

As much as I often say I dislike the French they're actually a decent bunch, their biggest problem is ott love for paperwork, that and their horrid nurses.

I still maintain I don't like the Dutch in big crowds, groups of 2-4 fine, anything above that they're my least favourite nationality by a long way.  It doesn't help when about 10,000 of them descend on resort for "Dutch Week" at the end of the season.

Fair enough....I do feel a bit sad though,  that  the diving and feigning antics of one Portugeezer, should cloud my judgement of such a loyal ally of England.  The Anglo-Portugeezer Alliance dates back to 1373....it was particularly significant in the Peninsular War when Wellington used Portugal as a base from which to launch effect campaigns against the French,  breaking  thier bid for European hegemony and bankrupting the Iberian influence in Latin America in the process.

No wonder, he got a pub named after him in Eastcott Hill.

That Schweinsteiger has a lot about him and is coming on leaps and bounds every tournament he plays.

It was only a one game ban.

Getting a bit bored of gambling on football now, I only started it for the playoffs and carried on for the group stages of the Euro's.

The holding midfielder, has been around , since Nobby Stiles back in 66.

If you want to blame soimeone blame Alf Ramsey,  who did away with conventional wing men.

It sparked a trend for converting full backs into midfielders.....fellas who could tackle,  pass short  and generally defend.

STFC had Joe Butler....in 68/69 we didn't concede too many goals.

Well well well the Wussians beat the dutch, what a surprise, well for some maybe.  I still find it amusing how some media whores were writing the russians off after the Spain game, even though after the first 20 mins the Russians had played just as well as the Spaniards.   On another day I think the Ruskies would have beaten them.

On to tonight, another one too close to call, though if I had to back one team I think it would be Italy, even without Gattuso.  Should be some decent footie on display though.

These Euro's have been a breath of fresh air, love the way few teams seem to be running to the corners (time wasting) in the last 10 mins as seems to be the way forward this side of the channel.

It's always the same really... Teams like the Dutch, Spanish, English, Czech Republic and more recently the Portuguese who get backed to do something and it's always the usual suspects and "lesser" outfits like Croatia, Turkey and Russia - all decent, battling international teams cause the "suprises" which really isn't a suprise at all - just mere arrogance of the powerful football nations.

2004 - Greece
2000 - Portugal (who hadn't been considered a "force" before this)
1996 - Czech Republic & Croatians

I think our irrational hatred of Germany is rooted in jealousy-we wish we were half as lucky/good as them.I hope they win it.They seem genuinely fond of their fans-our players only care about themfuckingselves.

Or the fact that they single handedly tried to destroy most of Europe and failed on 2 occasions. It all stems back to the history between the 2 countries. Most of Europe hates Germany for the same reason. France, Holland, Poland etc.

Most of the Germans who played a part in WWII are dead, those that are left are in their 80's and 90's and in a couple of decades will all be dead.

The modern German had nothing to do with something that happened over 60 years ago and to dislike them for that reason is ludicrous.

We might as well hate Italians for the Roman invasion, hate people from Scandinavia because of the Vikings, etc, etc.

But I fucking hate the French. I can't forgive them for 1066.........

Germany are a very good team, one that is greater than the sum of its parts.

If England ever want to be successful again then they should take a long hard look at the German set up and the infrastructure behind it. Their league isn't dominant in Europe by any means, but it produces players who can play to a system and can perform when it matters most.

Well that's what I think anyway.

IF you hate a nation because of something which happened before you were born you were born then you're a bit of a knob. Even more so if it was before your parents were born, as it will be for most on here.

The rivalry is a bit of fun, but trying to equate it to hatred is a bit childish.

Plus, you are allowed to stand up at their league games of course.

Ticket prices are really cheap over there apparently?

For purely football reasons I dislike the Turks (played better than Germany yesterday though) However, as a kid living in Germany we were always told to fear and stay away for the Turks! How bad is that...

Yeah Trier is a nice place and is supposed to be a cracking night out to boot.

We decided just to watch the game in the pub with all of the Germans, and I was surprised how easy it was to get to the bar. There was an ace barmaid who was providing a quality drinks service which meant we never had to queue at the bar, cracking cans on the lassie!!

I wanted Spain to win but have to commend the Germans for their good spirit in losing, we got a kebab on the way home and they were all singing and dancing and generally having a good time. I dread to think what the English would have done in the same situation, probably set fire to as many Seat cars as possible!
