Title: Granville Axed!
Post by: alanmayes on Thursday, May 7, 2009, 06:10:03
Adver reporting that Goalkeeping Coach John Granville has been axed.

TOWN goalkeeping coach John Granville has become the latest to receive the County Ground axe, the Swindon Advertiser can exclusively reveal.

The Trinidadian arrived at Swindon in July 2007, but has paid the price for the poor form of stoppers Peter Brezovan and Phil Smith, who both made a series of high-profile errors, as Town finished the season with the fifth worst defensive record in League One.

Granville follows first team coach Ady Williams in heading for the exit, along with 13 out-of-contract players, as manager Danny Wilson makes a clean sweep of his playing and backroom staff in preparation for the 2009/10 season.

The Advertiser understands Granville was informed of the decision on Tuesday by Wilson, and cleared his desk before saying his goodbyes at the County Ground yesterday to end his two-year spell in Wiltshire.

Town chief executive Nick Watkins confirmed the decision, admitting Wilson is keen to bring in a new coach as soon as possible.

He told the Advertiser: “The manager came in and inherited a back office team, and because of the situation we were in, had no opportunity or desire to make any changes.

“But looking to next season, and like any manager coming into a new club, there is always a danger of change.

“Danny’s view was that we had been shipping far too many goals, and that it is an area that needs a lot of focus and attention.

“For that, he wanted his own man and someone he felt he could work with more closely in terms of goalkeeping issues.

“John is a delightful man and I want to thank him for what he has done, and wish him well for wherever the future may take him.”

Bloody 'ell.

At least we now know that Fitton isn't averse to letting Wilson make coaching changes. I'm sure that's come up as a bart theory at some point.

Was this a termination, or had his contract finished - anybody know ?

You can only get a termination after 24 weeks in special circumstances.

Celebration time!!

It was blindingly obvious that both our keepers weren't getting the correct coaching.

But that shouldn't make someone worse should it ?

A good coach should get the best out of a player though?

Now I wonder if he is gonig to dispense with Byrne's services also ?

What's Beasley up to these days? The keeper coach we had under Wise..... got the bet out of our keepers? Not still at Leeds is he?

Best thing Wilson has done yet!!

Just Byrne to get rid of now Danny!

I've no idea why both our keepers lost form for so long.

But if Wilson thinks he needs to make changes for the good of the team then so be it.

Why what's wrong with Byrne?

Fair play giving Wilson the freedom to make changes to on and off field arrangements.  Needs backing like this if he wants to achieve what I think he is capable of.

I'm glad Wilson isn't afraid to make big changes in order to change our fortunes. I'm now of the thinking Wilson may have been the best manager of our choices but time will tell.

What's clear is that he feels we're definitely at the wrong end of the table and is showing more desire and ambition than we've had all [last] season. I don't expect a 100% turnaround within a season but if I was betting on our fortunes I'd put money on a clear improvement.

These are the sorts of changes which we thought would realise our potential under Malpas but never materialised.

Biggest clear out since McMoan but in that case that twat got it wrong and ripped the heart out of the club!

Not suprising... It's becoming clear to me that at this stage Wilson is on the same wavelength as many of the fans!

Blindingly obvious thing to do, thankfully DW can see it too. So far he's got it all right I reckon (will miss Barry Corr and Brez but he's probably right with that too) looking forward to seeing things develop.

Wilson doesn't have a track record of having the same staff everywhere.

I'm still hoping he'll bring in Shaun Taylor though :)

ooooh

A few years back I was in Ashton Court with the missus and the entire City squad (Tinnion's summer in charge after Wilson's sacking) were training - I could help shouting "Sah-win-don" followed by a "ooh Shaun Taylor" - I looked and sounded like a right knob.

Not sure what Taylor has been doing since he left City, has he been coaching or managing anywhere else to build up his reputation ?

While the sentiment is there with Taylor I'd much prefer someone who has a good record as a defensive coach....perhaps Sturrock would like to give Blackley back to Swindon !

No, I'll take sentiment thank you.

Shaun Taylor has worked more-or-less constantly since retiring Bristol City, Forest Green Rovers and the Elite Advanced Development Centre.

Byrne is good at his job and he was working for Plymouth College.

I'm glad the article mentioned that Wilson was looking for a new keeper coach.

Otherwise I would have said it was a cost saving exercise.

It was a shame we lost Mike Stowell after one day.

Ive heard that an FL or FA official came round inspecting coaching badges and Graville produced a South American one that no one had ever heard of. So for the rest of the season he had to have the youth coach with him on the training ground.

So basically the bloke didnt really have the qualifications for the job, hence the termination.
