Since I've been back in the UK for a week I've spent a lot of time with my sister's kids, got me to thinking what their dreams might be at such a young age.  When I was 7, the age of oldest of the 4 of the kids, all I wanted was to become a mechanic and I think that was moslty because Tom is MOT backwards.  I never followed that dream as an adult as it wasn't something I was remotely interested in by then.  

Did any of you actually follow the dreams you had when very young, did any of you have any strange dreams that you now look back on and laugh/cringe at?

I’m 32, have been an engineer for 15 years and I still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up.  :)

I always thought I wanted to be a mechanic because a family friend did it, then I wanted to be a barber, then I spent a week on a building site to get experience as a bricklayer, following that I did a year at college studying to become a fitness instructor.

I never had any idea what I actually wanted to do for more than a month when I was a kid, other than the obvious ones like becoming a professional footballer or racing driver etc.

A Submariner, and being from a military family I was allowed a visit to a recently returned diesel down in Portsmouth. I was told not to let the smell put me off as you soon become accustomed to it. It was fucking awful, I joined the Army

I wanted to be a journalist when I was a kid. I could not be more glad that I dropped that idea when I didn't get to do work experience at the Adver!

I was a boring kid, I wanted to be an Accountant - as far as I could tell, it seemed a good way to make money and I was good with numbers.  I studied for a few years and determined that I found it very boring - who'd have thunk it.

I never chose my career, it has been a series of next job up decisions and I fell into the particular field of work, more as way of keeping me busy I think.  I always fancied owning my own Hotel - not that I'd be any good at it, too many people.

A good friend of mine has a good friend called Lana actually, the friendship group all call her Anal of course.

As my job title has often included Analyst, I used to play on that in pubs in my 20's and 30's - expressing that my job was that of an Anal ist.  When receiving a sufficiently confused look I'd play along - odd how many people would fall for it, I don't exactly have the porn industry look about me, well, maybe some Kinky shit if they fancy a geeky looking, slightly over weight dad I guess.

Along the same lines, I was once invited to an "Anal Cyst" meeting by someone who was clearly overly reliant on predictive text on their phone. Much hilarity ensued.

When I was a small, I decided I wouldn't do a job that involved wearing a uniform....

Forst proper job was scaffolding (wanted to be a Fred Dibnah stylee steeple jack).

That was too much like fecking hard work for 15 1/2 year old me so, after a couple of years I turned it in a went to work at a petrol station before joining the army for 6 years, driving a lorry for 6 months and then the Old Bill for 26 1/2 years.

So much for youthful decisions.

Apart from some vague idea of being  atrain driver when I was really small, I never really seemed to have a clue what I wanted to do.

Even when we did work experience at school I was pretty meh, did 1 week at Brize in ATC which was OK but quite dull as there isn't much you can ask a 15 year old to do in a control tower (the day refuelling over the north sea was fun though!) and then the other working in a camping and outdoor equipment shop (as I was quite outdoorsy) which actually held me in good stead as it let to a Saturday and holidays job from 15-23 which basically paid for me to go through university without having to work whilst I was studying up in Newcastle.

Kind of fell into my degree and career as I found something similar at A levels easy to do and a bit interesting, but its generally painfully dull.

Still pisses me off that I don't really have a practical skill to do as a hobby or fall back on, but that's life I suppose.

I wanted to be an archeologist as a youngster, then didn't dig it.  Eventually, I followed a career in engineering which is a most misunderstood profession.

Apart from a footballer or rock star would have loved to own my own farm.

Ffs where did it all go wrong. The porn industry not for everyone.

I wanted to be an accountant as I was good with numbers.
Hated exams so ended up in IT which was ok, but never really felt like a career I chose.

Ironically my son is an accountant (albeit part qualified at the moment), he didn’t want to be in IT as he heard me moaning about it :)

Most people I grew up with didn’t have a clue what to do. I had a right thick mate who I later learned ended up working for NASA!

Things happen over the years and I just went with the flow. Longest stint was setting up and running my own business for 20 years.

I wanted to work in motorsport or the fire service.

Did my work experience at Arrows Grand Prix but didnt get offered an apprenticeship. My mate did though, lucky bastard. He ended working for Ferrari in italy for a bit

Went to college, then joined the fire service and did that for 15 years before i packed it in (job politics). Fucked my head up now which is lovely

Work for one of the other emergency services now as a reasearcher

Didn't know firefighting was actually a dream of yours, such a shame that having realised it it's had the affect it has had.

Lad I went to school with (and admittedly haven't spoken to since so its all SM) was in the FS and seems to have been similarly fucked over by it/them.

Yeah was at Leafield. I dont think the site is even used by anyone at all now. I got to go to Silverstone testing with the F1 team one day which was pretty cool, and when i finished my 2 weeks, i walked out with a door from one of the Volvo touring cars signed by the drivers.

Used to love watching Londons Burning as a kid, think i got it from that.

Wanted to be a journalist but got put off as I got older and I realised there's a lot of scumbags in that industry (no offence to any scumbags on here). Then I had no idea, but I swore I wouldn't follow my dad's footsteps into the boring world of IT. Now I work in software engineering. Sigh.

I did fancy being a rockstar for a bit but turns out I'm shit at writing and playing music. Still enjoy it though!

Ended up in fire hydrant management.

TV Cameraman, which then turned to wanting to be a motoring journalist, then a traffic copper.

I wanted to be a carpenter as I loved woodwork at school. I absolutely hated metalwork as it was smelly, dirty and noisy . So I ended up getting an apprenticeship at PSF in engineering which was smelly, dirty and noisy.

The only thing I can really remember since primary school is wanting to be a truck driver, because I could smoke and no one could tell me what to do(to an extent). I achieved those aims if not the occupation I suppose.

Possibly my biggest gripe with my secondary education is they didn't teach us to believe in ourselves or imagine we could do something different. I can't blame my parents, for them university was a dream. I went and graduated then never used my degree and every job I've had since has been manual.

I'm happy with how I ended up, but if I could go back I'd tell myself to find a career I could take around the World, rather than taking off around the World without a career  :)

I wanted to work at Williams racing in Didcot.
Had a couple of interviews but no.
Then by chance started fixing irons and kettles
Was offered an apprenticeship as a Radio and TV engineer and carried on in that form of industry all my life.
Trouble is at 66 I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up ? .

An Astronaut. I wrote to NASA when I was about 7 and got a nice little pack of stuff back. Didn't end up as an Astronaut though sadly.
