Post by: red macca on Saturday, July 29, 2006, 20:56:56
Dordrecht 1-1 Town

Town recorded their third successive 1-1 draw as they completed their tour of Holland and Belgium with a disappointing game at FC Dordrecht. Richard Naylor netted for the Blues, with both goals coming in the opening seven minutes.

Boss Jim Magilton played Sam Parkin in an advanced central midfield/deep-lying striker role ahead of Vemund Brekke Skard with Jaime Peters on the right and Ian Westlake on the left. Danny Haynes partnered Nicky Forster in front of Parkin.

 surely this is not his position

Wouldn't have thought so, but friendlies are for experimenting......perhaps SSP will become a new Teddy Sheringham.

It certainly is not his position.  From what I gather, Sam is not having a happy time of it with the Tractor Boys. I can see him getting loaned out this season (not to us though!)

first time ive heard SSP mentioned in ages....and its not even about him scoring....so I guess he hasnt got any this pre-season...

oh dear....was so sure it would all work out for him as well....oh well if not he can always come back to his adopted home

Which is ridiculous - despite missing most of last season thru injury, he still finished as their second highest scorer. Surely even the Suffolk worzels can work out that that perhaps indicates the problem lies with the team/formation as a whole? Like for example anyone on here could tell them playing SSP on his own up front doesn't work. Bah!

I've had a few chats with an ipswich fan recently down here...
He's very insistent on me telling him exactly how ipswich should play in order to get the best out of SSP.
I can't be bothered to think of the answer..

Can someone give me a quick talk-off I can use that will keep him quiet for the time-being?
I've tried explaining that pace and heading ability are not particular attributes of the man so how did he score his goals?

He played in League One.

All credit to the bloke, but I think he'd found a good level, and shouldn't have necessarily gone up a league - sorry.

Yeah have to agree with that. My Ipswich mate says the same, that he can't really rate him or boo him til he has played a few more games for them.

Quite a good little montage actually.. probably been posted before but I think some of the Tractor Boys who doubt his ability could do with watching it..

I definitely don't remember him scoring so many with his head!

He was always good with his positioning which is why he got the headers. Such as that one against QPR one on one from a Gurney cross if I remember correctly.

He is ace. Definitely good enough for the Championship IF you use him as an out and out centre forward!

Nearly all of his goals were from close distance (between penalty spot and 6 yard box). Not really a long distance striker of the ball....

That's where Ipswich need him, right up there with good crossers banging them into him.

that is the story for you

Preston North End have confirmed they have made an offer for Ipswich Town striker Sam Parkin.
Fellow Championship sides Luton and Coventry are also believed to be keen on the 25-year-old 6ft 2in forward.

"Parkin is a player we've made an offer for. He's one of a number of people we've chased," Preston chairman Derek Shaw told the Lancashire Evening Post.

He added: "But it isn't £200,000, like it has been reported. I wouldn't like to comment on what the figures are."

Parkin has been hampered by injury since his £550,000 move from Swindon Town to Portman Road in June 2005.

He has made only 17 League starts and scored five goals in that period.

The striker was then left out of new manager Jim Magilton's squad of 16 for the opening-day defeat by Crystal Palace.

really interesting reading posts on the ipswich rivals site

there are tons of threads about him and their fans are arguing about whether they are going to regret selling him.

the general feeling is that he was never given a chance to prove himself and was booed most of the time he played, he even got ironic cheers for when he did something right.

coventry, luton or preston would be a good move cant help feeling luton is where he would do best and i had a gut feeling newell had parkin in mind when he got that ridiculous price for steve howard.

i hope he goes on to score 20 odd goals this season for his new team and show ipswich what they missed out on.

feel really sorry for him.

shame q.p.r did not have the money to make a bid

I know people bang on about he's in the past and we shouldn't bther thinking about him, but Super sam was one of the good guys, not just because he scored a shed-load of goals for us. He conducted himself impecably at every turn and truly deserves to be at a club where the fans appreciate him. I'd always liked Ipswich fans until they treated him the way they have...if only they knew

Copied and pasted something i said a few weeks ago:

In my view, a true legend has to be one of the best players in his position that the club has ever had. Parkin falls into the catagory below that for me.

Off the top of my head better strikers than SSP include
Fjortoft
D Shearer
White
Opara
Close

(ok I was taking the **** with the last 2)

parkin is our best striker over the last decade fact!!!

if you were to take say bobby zamora who is without doubt a brighton legend
then look at his stats not including sub appearances
125 appearances / 76 goals

compare that to parkin down the page (very similar)

who knows how many more goals fjortoft would have scored for us if he stayed but if he is a legand then so is parkin

had some time to kill so here are a few players goals/appearances tally's
fjortoft goalscoring record in a town shirt
75 (+12) appearances 39 goals

parkin
135 (+7) appearances 73 goals

grazioli
50 (+38  ) appearances 18 goals

chris hay
77 (+24)appearances 30 goals

craig maskell
49 (+10) appearances 27 goals

dave mitchell
73 (+7) appearances 24 goals

duncan shearer
195 (+4) appearances 98 goals

steve white
252 (+60) appearances 111 goals

peter thorne
76 (+15) appearances 32 goals

wayne allison
117 (+3) appearances 36 goals

jimmy quinn
125 (+29) appearances 61 goals

dave bamber
134 (+3) appearances 46 goals

yep very true but he still had to put away the chances.

fjortoft was the better player but parkin is still a legend.

not about who you play against its what they did for the  club while they were here.

both were fantastic! but i think that parkin will remember his days here more so than fjortoft will.

fjortoft was an international already when he joined us.

nobody knew parkin really when he joined us and the fans got to see parkin mature and become a better play with each season.
i remember the fans being so proud when he got that scotland call up.
was never the same with fjortoft.

Shame that both strikers didn't enjoy success at Swindon - Fjortoft had the League Cup run (possibly the Prem campaign) and Parkin a Play-Off season but as a team we didn't do much.

I probably saw a higher percentage of Jan Aage's games than I did Parkin's, so I'd always go for him.  I remember his hat-trick against Coventry when he'd just found his touch, two against Norwich including one that I thought was the most graceful header I'd ever seen at the time, and the beauty against Millwall in the cup followed by hitting the bar when attempting Le Tissier's free-kick.

I'm quite surprised he's opted for Luton. Obviously its so he can stick close to home, more so than ever in fact. But he always stated his ambition to play at the highest level he could and test himself - yet he's gone to the smaller, less ambitious, more convenient club.

I think Parkin will be a very good signing - more than adequate replacement for Howard.

so what constitutes being a legend? OK, we won nowt while he was here - but he was the first real player we had to believe in for years, the first terrace hero for a long, long time - the first player we could be proud of - he consistently hit 20+ a season and he probably overstayed his jaunt at SN1 - he could have gone after his second season but stayed to try and take us up.

I was lucky enough to get to know sam when he worked at the club and he was always up for doing community stuff (unlike many others( - he loved it at Swindon and still talks about it. He would have done anythign for the club.

The 25-year-old made his debut coming on as a substitute during Luton's 1-0 defeat at Wolves and featured for 62 minutes in the reserves' 8-0 win over Franchise last Tuesday, but he didn't make the scoresheet.

I woke up this morning convinced we would meet Luton at some point this season so I thought I'd have a quick check-up on Parkin's progress..

62 minutes in an 8-0 win against Franchise' reserves and no goals..

He's got some competition up-front at Luton so he's gonna have start firing sooner rather than later.. Crystal Palace next..
