Title: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Tails on Sunday, July 20, 2008, 17:31:53
Well, I know a few of you showed interest but couldn't come, but Swindons only fans team (as far as I'm aware) did a pretty good job at WorldNet (http://www.boocock.net/ifa/fanbantanet08/) this year. For those of you who don't have a clue what I'm talking about, it's a competition where fans of teams all over Europe compete every year in Leeds' Boddington Hall (donkey started a thread on it earlier in the year). The top two teams go through to the cup, the bottom two to a plate competition.

Anyway, as per usual we were pretty short on players, with only 13 to our name and no goalkeeper. Despite that, we managed a 0-0 draw with Arsenal Nigeria, a 1-0 win against Halifax and a 2-0 win against Hampton and Richmond yesterday. For the first time in years, we won our group! Not a bad feat really, when you consider last year we finished bottom, with 1 goal for and 8 against!

We entered the next stage of the competition this morning against one of the favourites, Bury (they had just won the IFA league, and they play as a team every week which is obviously something we lack). Despite a pretty good performance, we went down 2-0. An own goal in the first half, and a second which was pretty dubious IMO, as I'm certain our centre back was fouled. Nevertheless we did ourselves proud I think, and we looked pretty good kitted out in last seasons home kit which was kindly provided by the club (BIG thank you to them for their help).

I know a lot of you won't care, but the main reason for me posting this is simple - we need players! The older boys in the team are really getting on, and it is leaving us short for players. If you would be interested in participating next year (it is always a great weekend, cheap beer in the student halls!) then keep your eyes peeled for threads during next season or PM me or donkey, as he is the manager. The banter is always really good, we ended up playing on the pitch next to Oxford who kindly attended our games with their megaphone and gave us a nice rendition of "The Swindon family". I think they were just bitter, as they lost all their 3 games yesterday, scoring 1 and conceeding 10.

We've got a few pics we'll be posting up shortly to give you an idea of what it's like, but if anyone is up for it please let us know!

Nice one Tails... If you keep me posted, I'll probably be available next year - Leeds is not hard to get to for me these days.

Sounds like a good laugh, I may be of use to you due to the fact that I can wield a pair of goalkeeping gloves with reasonable levels of competency (As long as there's no goal kicks involved)

Well done to the lot of you, now get training for next year, bring us some glory.

If I can afford it I will play next year, which is exactly what I said last year....but this year I mean it, well I meant it last year as well...

Just had a quick look online, and found an article on the Arsenal Nigeria side we played...

Quote
The Gunners FC of Lagos will depart Nigeria on Thursday to participate in this year’s World Network Championship scheduled for Leeds in the United Kingdom from July 18 to 20.

The All-Stars side comprise of ex-Nigerian internationals and other individuals from the corporate community in the country but who are strictly fans of Premier League club Arsenal.

Among the former national football stars that will travel for the three-day event are ex-Eagles’ defender Taribo West, winger Friday Elahor as well as midfielders Friday Ekpo and Waidi Akanni, who is also the Chairman of the Lagos Football Association. Others are the Vice Chairman of the NFA, Amanze Uchegbulam; former board member Emmanuel Ibru and corporate icon Goke Coker while Nollywood stars Fred Amata and Don Pedro Obaseki will also be on the trip.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arsenal Nigeria, Chika Mordi, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of UBA Capital, said that the group would present two teams of regulars and All-Stars.

Virgin Nigeria, UBA, Transcorp and Tinapa are sponsoring the Gunners to the Leeds competition over 96 teams will engage in a knockout format till two finalists emerge.

I had no idea we played against some famous Nigerians!

One of the squad, we took a load and it appears I've got the one where some of us (myself included) are doing stupid faces! Got a few more of us 'relaxing' before our big game against Halifax.

You are one of the younger guys!

And for the first time the youth was more important to us than the experience of the older ones.  Times, they are a-changing.

Just been on the website and Bury won the final of the IFA Cup, beating the League Champions 5-1 in the final.  Our 2-0 defeat wasn't too bad at all!

Edit:  Worldnet was won by Preston, the IFA Cup by Bury and the IFA League by Rochdale...if we move Swindon closer to Manchester, I reckon we could do well!

DRS has just asked, quite reasonably, when and how much...

So, weekend of 24/25/26 July 2009 at Boddington Hall in Leeds.  The cost is £85 which includes two nights B&B and the entrance fee.  I can take a deposit of £25 by the end of November, and the balance of £60 by the end of March if that helps with cash flow.

Yep, almost entirely down to the TEF.  Our more regular players should be a little ashamed.

I'm in Essex for the first two weeks in February, but I don't mind sorting something out after that. What day would be best for people, I think we should try and play once a week?

Does anyone have a Swindon card? If not I will get one on Friday as it makes the pitch a lot cheaper.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: DiV on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 12:28:49
I'd pretty poor at organising it. I'm never out of bed early enough to book the pitches for starters.

Swindon card does make it cheaper, I guess batch has one because he books the gay and proud games but I think some places are strict of having to be paid by the person on the card.

At Nationwide we used to have one card which we used to book our lunch time slot and any other slot any of us wanted. It must have been used by about 10 different people.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Samdy Gray on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 12:46:43
I don't have a Swindon Card so can't help out on that front.

I'm good for Monday, Wednesday and Sunday.

And where are we playing? Link Centre?

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 12:54:12
I reckon Link Centre, at least to start with to get the fitness levels up. Those pitches seem to do the trick on tiring your legs out.

I do think we should switch to the Oasis at a point though (as long as we have enough players) because going from the Link pitches to 11 a side will be a bit crazy.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Samdy Gray on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 13:05:10
Good idea.

Might be worth playing a couple of games either at Lydiard Park or Mannington Rec when the weather gets better to a) get used to playing on grass and b) get used to playing on a full size pitch.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Nemo on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 13:53:49
I have one of the council Leisure Passport things for the gym and I think that counts as a Swindon Card to book pitches and that.

Still  none the wiser as to where I will be in what weeks. I may be spending more of my time in Swindon than I thought, but the secondment is 98% to go through (how the manager arrived at that percentage I don't know) so given that, if people still want a regular weekly game, I will pass the torch on to someone who is around to organise and tag along when I'm about (if there is space).

You'll have to remind me, does my £85 quid contain any method of transportation to Leeds? I'm guessing not, I wonder if we can convince Barnes to run a coach up there full of supporters.

I'll be at the Crewe match, so can collect cash/cheques then.  As for transport that's up to you, but nearer the time we can find out who's in Wiltshire who has transport.  Clearly Nemo wants a coach!  A minibus may make sense, however...

Yeah, I was going to say that. We're all too young to have the correct entitlement on our driving licenses.

I'm able to get 4 people in my car if needs be.

Yeah, I was going to say that. We're all too young to have the correct entitlement on our driving licenses.

I think you have Sam. If you are an older git like me and got a full licence before 1st Jan 1997, you have D1 entitlement unless you have renewed it, when they remove it (bastards) and you can only get it put back on for three years at a time if you meet certain medical criteria.

However, if you are over 21 and have held a full licence for over two years you will be fine:

Quote
Holders of a full category B (car) driving licence may drive any of the vehicles listed below:

    * a passenger carrying vehicle manufactured more than 30 years before the date when it is driven and not used for hire or reward or for the carriage of more than 8 passengers
    * a minibus with up to 16 passenger seats provided the following conditions are met:

i.   the vehicle is used for social purposes by a non-commercial body but not for hire or reward
ii.  the driver is aged 21 iii. the driver has held a car (category B) licence for at least 2 years
iv. the driver is providing the service on a voluntary basis
v.  the minibus maximum weight is not more than 3.5 tonnes or 4.25 tonnes including any specialist equipment for the carriage of disabled passengers
vi. if the driver is aged 70 or over, is able to meet the health standards for driving a D1 vehicle

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_4022619 (http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/DriverLicensing/WhatCanYouDriveAndYourObligations/DG_4022619)

I'm not sure about if there is a minimum age on rental - perhaps for insurance - e.g. you have to be over 25 to hire, but it is worth a bash.

That's a real bitch, isn't it?

So if you ever wanted to drive a minibus for (e.g) your mates you would have to do a PCV test and get a medical. I can see why they have put this legislation in place (i.e. you can kill a load of people in one go), but what is the difference between that and driving it for a charity or a school where you don't need the extra PCV/D1 entitlement?

Bullshit.

Oh and because our Yeovil minibus is quite new, it is speed limited to 60mph  ::)

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure

If Sam drove the minibus and split the cost with us, wouldn't that be for hire or reward?

Quote
You may be allowed to drive a minibus without bus entitlement, if it is not used for hire or reward. Hire or reward generally means any payment in cash or kind made by or on behalf of passengers which gives them right to be carried in a vehicle.

Saying that, I have no idea how they'd prove anything, but the police always presume guilt until proven innocent with driving offences.

No.

Hire = you pick up members of the public (like a bus or taxi)
Reward = you make a profit from the activity

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Simon Pieman on Friday, March 27, 2009, 19:04:26
Quote
The UK based Transport Office have provided the following definition;

“Hire or reward is any sort of payment which gives a person a right to be carried on a vehicle regardless of whether a profit is made or not. The payment may be made by the person himself, or on his behalf and may be a direct payment (such as a fare or other payment made directly in respect of the journey) or an indirect payment (such as a membership subscription to a club, payment for a bed in a hotel, school fees or payment for concert tickets). Although such indirect payments are usually made in respect of other services (rather than for transport) they are nonetheless viewed by the courts as hire or reward because anyone who had not made the payment would have no right to be carried.”

Anyway, I'm up for the cheaper option, which would not be a minibus :)

I can also confirm this.

Can you post the teams/colours in this thread please to avoid me being a retard again?

Oh, and would everyone on here going to Worldnet be up for an 11 a side friendly in June time??? Would be cool if we could play another fans team but I think it'd be too difficult unless people were willing to travel. I was also mulling over the idea of trying to see if the Oxford guys would fancy a 'friendly' on Friday night. Probably not a good idea as most of our lot got knackered walking to the bar so best not to wear them out too early!

Tails has just text me asking if we are playing tonight or tomorrow.

I replied red.

Would it be harsh to tell him we're actually playing tonight?

To sum up where we are...

Lucien, there are still places...I need £85 (two nights b&b plus entry fee) about now really.  PM me for further details if you are interested.  As for fitness, we can always rotate the squad to accomodate...I'm a big lad myself, and I know I'll be fine.

DV, Tails, are you guys sorting out sending cash up?

Tails, do you have money for Pete W?

Si Pie, if your mate's still on for it I need the money about now...

Could really do with you all responding asap (even if it's just to let me know things are in hand) so I know where I am.

Ah yes, my girlfriend will send you a cheque through on friday hopefully so should be with you early next week. Could you PM your address again?? If she can't do it I'll just send the cash through recorded delivery.

DV gimme your cash on Weds.

Update on the kit front, Adam is chasing the kit man to see if we can have two full sets of kits (home & away). I think it's tough as they usually take the kits with them on any pre season tours but hopefully he'll get back to me soon and we can sort out some sort of deposit (some financial help would be appreciated there, providing we get all the kit back you'll get any money you put in back). Should be OK though as we managed to get a load of full home kits last year. Fingers crossed.

And back to my post a few days ago, would you all be up for a friendly in June time?

Update:

I'm still waiting on three players to pay (I'm sure two will), which gives us a squad of 17 or 18 (depending on the third chap).  Over the years ability hasn't always been the reason we've not got too far, sometimes we just run out of energy...with 17/18 players that shouldn't be a problem.  So don't ask anyone else to play, I reckon we're there (obviously if Simon Cox wants to play we can make room for him...)

I don't mind where I play, but I'm heavily right footed so that may make a bearing on your decision. I've not played 11 a side for years, played in plenty of 5 a side tournaments and in a league over the past year or so though, which is why I don't have a position as such.

Out of interest, are there any positions which you're struggling to get selections for?

'Keeper, as long as somebody else smacks the goal kicks one. Perfectly fine kicking out of hand but just can't get the damned thing any decent distance off the floor. Oh, I'm also pretty short for a keeper as well, so lets not get too many crosses either.

Failing that I'll run around like and unfit Duracell Bunny damn near anywhere.

Cheapest I can find is £67.50 each and at a stupid time coming back. Where exactly is it we're going and is there a station nearby? I just went for Leeds station as it's supposed to be in Leeds.

I might add, if we can get cheap enough tickets I would go by train. Other than checking national rail/thetrainline I can't think of how to get cheaper tickets.

We beat Forest in '97 when the ball went about 4 ft over the goal line for a goal kick, but I shouted 'play to whistle' and we scored. Is that cheating? Nah.

This old timer story has been brought to you by the letters S and O, and the number 4

OK you lot.  I can get 2 or 3 seats in a car from Swindon.  It's basically the back seat of a car, so 2 or 3 depending on your size.  If you want the places let me know.  There will, of course, be some fuel costs involved.

A full email will go out tonight with all the details to those in the squad.

right.

I dont like long distance driving at all, so if there is a lift available I will gladly take it.

However, if needs must then I will drive and will have room for 3 other passengers.

As far as I'm aware the permits are transferable as no-one has asked me for and reg nos, so we should be OK.  There is a space in the car belonging to Simon Tighe, email him for details (see my email).  Si, would you like me to resend the email?

Apparently he's going to Monmouth festival on the Saturday. If we're short of players he said he may be able to ditch that and still do Worldnet.

I will therefore declare the Si Pie love mobile full (that's my future car not my anus):

Blackcurrant
Bennett
DV/Nemo

I'm probably going to get something like a Vauxhall Astray, so 3 in the back may be a squeeze (no pun inteaded again), we'll see what happens.

Ooh that wasn't too clear was it? There's only room for 2 in the back but there is a shotgun seat which I believe Bennett has requested.

So basically 2 seats in the back for you, Nemo and Blackcurrant to fight over.

If your sat nav isn't updated it will get you seriously lost... Ours did last year, we were trying to get into Leeds city centre and ended up going back down the M1. Very odd.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Samdy Gray on Monday, July 13, 2009, 12:25:29
I echo Tails' comment. Sat nav's don't seem to like Leeds very much. My sat nav wasn't very good trying to get me to the hotel for the Leeds game last season, it kept telling me to 'turn left' when I was on the motorway!

I reckon a print out from AA route planner would be a good backup option.

Nemo, what size are you (oo-er), I have a Town goalie shirt, padded goalie trousers and shorts, and gloves (I used to play in goal until I dislocated my shoulder - ouch).

I have a set of Red Lotto shirts (from the relegation season with Grazoili up front).  Just remember to bring at least two blue Town shirts (doesn't matter that they won't match) for everyone.

If anyone has a flashy phone (I believe that's the technical term) then a blog may be possible...who's the most technologically advanced of our party (it ain't me, babe).

Could fit in either M or L I'd have thought, my outfield shirt is an L but I'd be okay. I'm fine for gloves, but by all means bring some stuff along for me and I'll see what I can fit into.

Phone wise I might be able to do it, I'm trying out getting on here on my phone now and see how it works. Would probably cost me a fair bit though, anyone got unlimited 'net on their phone?

Match 1 (Still): To clarify, that was in our own net.

It should read...

Match 1: Following a badly misplaced header, Bennett adjusted 'himself', pointed at nobody in particular and walked off.
that's also a possibility. i was pointing at the other lad to split the fullback and central defender :(

KIT UPDATE:-

The Adidas kit was supposed to be in a lot earlier, instead it arrived today so Adam & co had to check to make sure there was enough for the youth team to use. If so, we could have their kit from last season. latest update is that they don't have enough, however they are expecting another delivery of kit tomorrow which should (hopefully) mean they have enough and we can have their kit. If not I'm gonna make a cheeky suggestion that we take the new kit. If they have some but enough, they may have enough for us... Maybe... It's gonna be an 11th hour thing but fingers crossed I can pick it up tomorrow evening when I get the home shirt, if it needs to be sooner I may have to use you DV.

It would be best if everyone brought spares though, just incase :)

Nemo, Simon (who will be driving our car) has put together a CD together of songs to remind us of school and college... I imagine it will be hilarious for us but awful for you, just a word of warning!

Don't worry about red shirts.  If the club cannot supply, I have 15 of the same red Town shirts.  I also have about 12 pairs of red socks (with white turnovers), too.  The only thing we need to do is bring blue away shirts (as many as we have).

Nathan, can you phone me and let me know so I know if I have to bring the shirts? Ta.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure

Right, just done a recky of what I have

2 pairs of red Swindon shorts (last two seasons)
4 pairs of red football socks
5 red Swindon shirts (3 are personallised with my name on the back!)
3 blue Swindon shirts

Also, I can borrow my sunday teams kit so we have a set of green (or yellow) shirts. The kit doesnt come with shorts or socks. I assume we could PROBABLY get away with red socks, red shorts and green shirts but if not I suggest everyone tries to bring a pair of dark shorts and socks to go with it.

On that note I have 2 pairs of black football shorts and one pair of black football socks.

Should also be able to pick up some training stuff and footballs to bring along. Space in the Si Pie love mobile permitting.

Cheers DV, good work.  You don't need to bring all that, however!  We *may* have a kit, won't know now until about lunchtime tomorrow, so from your list, you need only bring the following:

2 pairs of red Swindon shorts (last two seasons)
4 pairs of red football socks
3 blue Swindon shirts
some training stuff and footballs

Don't worry about the change kit, in years past we have forced others to change by having no change kit, so we stay in red!  If we have enough Swindon Blue then great, if not, no worries.  Remember you will all need to bring shorts and socks in case we don't get the kit.

Good work, again DV.

OK, then.  Sounds good.

We don't need to worry about matching shorts and socks, we can still wear our red/white ones, the refs won't mind.  I would say that I prefer to wear Swindon kit, which is why I wanted us to wear Swindon blue shirts, but hey, if it's gotten too difficult, then green it is.

Cheers again for your efforts, it's nice (and unusual) to have someone who thinks about stuff beforehand.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: DiV on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 13:48:19
Its OCD really.

Turning up and playing in non matching shirts just make you look useless and amatuer. I'm fully aware of the fact we are mostly useless and amatuer but lets at least look the part!

Plus in truth, green is more a Swindon Town colour than blue. Despite the fact we've only had 2 green kits in my life time.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Nemo on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 13:53:31
While all the others piss around with unimportant matters like what we're going to wear, I'd like to take the opportunity to plug the 100% official CyberRobins Twitter, updated by myself and Bennett (hopefully with pictures) over the weekend on occasion of us being sober enough to type. It'd be nice if our followers numbers could reach double figures.

www.twitter.com/CyberRobins

On the kit front, I'll be taking the new home shirt, which I'm picking up tonight, and last year's away shirt, both in M and without names on. As I'll probably be in goal, these can be lent out if needed.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Tails on Thursday, July 23, 2009, 18:05:23
We won't know if we've got a kit until lunchtime tomorrow, so my little crew will be staying in Swindon until it's sorted. shouldn't be too late though.

Can't believe how long it's taking, last year it was all last minute and we had no problems at all!

Good work Dan by the way, that could come in handy.

Gentlemen...relax...

Friday night is for drinking.
Saturday night is also for drinking.
During the day on Saturday we will play our matches.
During the day on Sunday we will play some more.

I wouldn't worry too much about training on the Saturday, but we will need to loosen up after the large gap between games 1 and 2, and certainly on Sunday morning before our opening match.  We are always half asleep on the Sunday morning, so we'll need waking up.

Some joker is the organisation committee put us and Oxford in the same building with them on the floor above us.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: donkey on Sunday, July 26, 2009, 18:14:08
A quick thanks to all the TEFers who played, we improved a lot for the last two games.  Unfortunately Stockport did to us what we have done to many in the past, sat back and absorbed the pressure from a better side to win.

I'll be on to start sorting next year soon...but in the meantime we should have matches against other supporters teams during the season.  They will be on the morning of the professionals match and Tails will organise them.  So even if the tourny isn't your thing, perhaps a match on a Saturday morning will be.

Awesome weekend, shame how it ended as we should have beaten Stockport but hopefully good fun was had by all.

The Oxford shirt thing was superb. Keep in mind we had all been drinking and poor Bunny had to climb to get the shirt in the first place!

Thanks to everyone who came once again, and big thanks to Donkey for organising it yet again. If anyone is seriously up for travelling to an away game early and playing before Town play let me know and I'll see what I can do. Obviously local teams are a preference, Brentford and Southampton definitely have teams and would probably be easiest.

The annual badabump for this thread.

Worldnet 2010 is on this coming weekend, with the usual variety of TEFers, friends of TEFers and vaguely Northern people we've persuaded to support Swindon for the weekend. Featuring heavily (although probably from the bench) are myself, Bennett, LucienSanchez and Dave. Tails and Donkey might actually get a game seeing as they're picking the team.

If anyone's interested in our weekend of drinking, interrupted by the occasional burst of football, then you can follow our lows and er...lows on Twitter (https://twitter.com/CyberRobins), where I and possibly Bennett if he can be arsed will put scores, accounts of DVs tactical masterplans and the occasional picture.

We're going to win the whole thing this year, no Taribo West in our way.

I wouldn't read too much into the numbers guys. Rob you'll get just as much time in goal as Ben, he just gets number 1 as he's more likely to beat me up if he doesn't get it.

Mulley, Bennett said 10 or 14 for you and Pete had claimed 10. He get's it first as he went and got the kit, same with Simon getting 7. Everyone will play a fair amount anyway, opening line up has more or less been decided.

I seriously don't mind him playing in goal the whole weekend, seems a bit daft to have two keepers out of a squad of 14!

Certainly are. My dad (Tony Norris) always played in the first ones and I went on to watch. Started playing in 2006 and now have taken over the running! The standard of competition has risen a hell of a lot since the early days.

We got quite lucky tbh. Not a bad first half but second they hit the post twice and forced a good save from Nemo. They had a drunk midget upfront who stood offside and probably now holds the record for most offsides in one game.

Good defensive effort!

0 0, good start. Having a drunk midget up front captures the true spirit of worldnet for me. Hows it going rb? Will always remember that first trip up to middlesborough. Not least because my car broke down and we waited an hour for the rac to basically fix it by taping i wire back on via alternator! Strangely we caught you up at the services. I think the arcade acted much the same as a light does to a moth.

Title: Re: The Cyber Robins' Worldnet Adventure
Post by: Tails on Monday, July 26, 2010, 09:19:44
It was tough, we defended very well in the first few games and only lost to a very good Exeter side due to a wondergoal. Southampton we played well but were hit quickly on the break and they ended up giving us a bit of a tonking despite the fact we played a lot better.

The second Stockport game was almost a carbon copy of last year, we dominated the play and were playing some excellent football then an unfortunate goalkeeping howler gave them a completely undeserved lead and then they followed it up with a 2nd and we were never gonna recover from that. To be fair to Stockport, they quite happily admitted they didn't deserve to get anything from the game but that's the way it goes.

We did OK though, lacked any real attacking quality but we did lose two very, very good forwards a few weeks ago that we weren't likely to replace. We'll get these two up next year and keep most of the guys that went this year and I think we'll do a lot better.

Thanks to everyone for coming, hope you enjoyed yourselves!

Yes and yes.  I should see you two hours after you leave (as Swindon is two hours from Leicester).  I would suggest going up over Stow, Moreton and via Warwick (A46/M69) - don't follow the sign to Leicester on the Fosse Way (it takes longer), though.
