Post by: swindonbob on Sunday, January 2, 2005, 21:16:30
I have broadband but it is in my bro's room. I want to buy a Router where i can just plug it in there and stick in a USB stick into my laptop and start using the web in my room. Problem is i know absolutely nothing about Routers and what all the lingo means and where to buy one. I dont want to spend as little money as possible on one. Can the techies help?

just be nice and send oxford fan that DVD on the cheap.

you need

1 x 802.11b CBL/DSL Router @~ 53.99 (Quick Linx - 2HC9WS)

1 x 802.11b 11Mbps USB Stick @ 10.98 (QL - 2Q2ZWS) - you might want two if your bro wants to connect to without any hassle but its only another 10

from www.dabs.com just type in the quicklinx codes in the top right and it will come up with what you need

Whits

I just bought a Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless-G Router (802.11g, 2.4GHz, 54 Mbps) which came with a free Wireless G USB Network Adapter.

However...

I cant set it up for two main reasons. The first is that there is no socket to plug the router into on the back of my computer - there seems to be nothing even remotely like the hole that i need for the Ethernet Networking Cable.\ And secondly it says "connect the telephone cord from the wall jack providing ADSL service to the 'DSL' line port on the rear of the router. But I have NTL broadband and that doesnt use a wall jack becuase it is all cables!

My guess is that i dont have some type of networking hardware on my computer and i have also bought the wrong type of router. Is this right? And will the recomendations you gave me work???

But I have NTL broadband and that doesnt use a wall jack becuase it is all cables!   - That means you have Cable not DSL hence the reason you can't plug it in, different type of broadband

The very first part of the instruction manual says - "Connect your computer to one of the "Connections to your computer" ports on the rear of the the router by using an ethernet networking cable."

1) Surely the router need to be connected to the main computer to share the internet connection with other laptops/computers? But i cant connect it.

2) So you are saying that my router is wrong for broadband - but if i take it back, get the money back and purchase the thing you recommended will that work for broadband???

Sorry for all the questions - but im shit at this.

bob i think the only way you can do this is by having cable setup on one pc and then sharing the connect which means that if you wanna go on t'internet you will need your bros pc to be on.

cable is pants, get DSL  :D
