Hello all. First time on the bank for me since Leeds in 1994.
Same scoreline (for, rather than against Town) would do nicely but in truth, I'd settle for any sort of win.
Hell, I'd take a draw with Shrewsbury failing to win. I'm off to Cosmo for a friend's birthday after the match, I don't want to be the grumpy sod at the end of the table...

Confident we'll do it. The beergate scandal seems to finally be over now so that's welcome news. At home and with the backing of the fans I expect us to up our game to a level which saw us get to 1st place back in Feb. The weather could play a part out there though. It's looking very grim at the moment.

Today has to be the day.
Hoping for a comfortable win but wouldn't be surprised with a nervy start.

I too missed the Stockport game in 1996 (had bought tickets for 16 home matches that season but left it too late, misjudging how many would come out of the woodwork).  I don't want to miss another rare opportunity to see a trophy lifted.  COYR

I really am worried about this. We seem too confidence that we are going to walk all over Port Vale. They aren't a bad team, and the best team that we have played so far, Shrewsbury, only snuck a 1-0 against them recently, when both teams had chances. I can't ever remember good times against Port Vale - Only frustration. Furthermore, I have the same feeling as the Wembley final against Chesterfield - I'm worried.

I've gone for a repeat of that end-of-season thrashing we gave them a few years back. 6-0. Ben Joyce to score. Eventually.

Title: Re: STFC - V - Port Vale Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Batch on Saturday, April 28, 2012, 09:24:12
Vale's 13th position is artificial thanks to the 10 point deduction. No pressure on them is probably a disadvantage.

But as Dave says, our home form can not be ignored. I still reckon 1-1 with the Shrews also drawing.

The last time I was nervous before a finalish game of the season v Vale...was in Hoddle's first season at the Wembley of the North.  We were sort of safe from relegation, in that we needed to lose about 7-0, and the team below win. Hoddle obviously felt confident, as he tinkered with the team a bit....when we were 2 down inside the first 20 minutes or so, I started to worry...but Adie Vivash, got one just before half time, and we only lost 3-1.

The game was also significant as it was the last STFC game for Paul Rideout...who came back on loan for a bit, to no discernible effect....he was subbed, giving Shaun Close a 20 minute cameo master class of comically incompetent finishing  :)

An early goal for us today would be a  good thing....

I agree that an early goal will help settle the players nerves somewhat.

I too was at that game at Vale Park, Rideout was almost an embarressment when he came back for the loan period, a mere shadow of his old self. One of the worst players on the pitch that day.

To be fair, we sound pretty poor. Having said that, the answer is pretty obvious - the reason we're top of the league is we don't usually play like that.

The "news" from the BBC:

Quote
HALF-TIME - LEAGUE TWO - AS THINGS STAND
Shrewsbury are on course for promotion this evening as they are beating Dagenham & Redbridge 1-0. Crawley and Torquay are battling for the third automatic promotion place but both their games are goalless.

At the bottom, Barnet are leading AFC Wimbledon 1-0 - and that result would mean curtains for the bottom two, Macclesfield and Hereford - both their games are goalless too.

Arses.

enjoying the Port Vale commentary - nice to hear a different perspective.

I wonder if the Vale fans that were commenting that we are one of the poorer sides they'd played this year still think that now?

Championees Championees Ole Ole Ole!

Well we did that in style!!  Very tight in the first half but the goal changed things.  Second half was brilliant, once the second goal went it the players seemed to relax and we played some scintillating stuff, still took a very good save from Wes to keep a clean sheet.  Bostock looks a real player, would be a great acquisition if we could get him for the season in Division 1 next time.  Not so sure about Holmes, he looks the business but is he a luxury?

Title: Re: Re: STFC - V - Port Vale Official Matchday Thread

Really could not have been a better way to become champions. We needed the first half goal as it opened the game up so much.

Our shooting was so clinical.

Bostock was awesome. Offers that extra bit of creativity and flair. Would be a great signing if we extend his loan

Post by: DiV on Saturday, April 28, 2012, 17:33:30
Bostock was very very good today. His cut back to Matt Ritchie for the first goal was every bit as good as Matt Ritchies finish.

Given time and a run of games there is definitely a very good player in there. My only worry is whether he could play in a midfield 4 as a central midfielder - or whether he's an off the striker midfield and only an off the striker midfielder.

Port Vale were good value in the first half and played some good stuff until Ritchie's goal.

... and then the second half and they were lovingly dismantled.

Yey.

What a great day - there was a little lad behind us in the queue at the turnstiles who was seeing his first match today - what an introduction.

I am absolutely loving the scarves aloft thing - it really looks great - a bit old fashioned.

Dear Mr Wray, can we keep Bostock and McEvely please?

:wotjump:Probably the most enjoyable day and season I have had watching Swindon in over 30 years I know we had the 93 playoff year which was really great but I dony know why but that ranked above it . The passion is back and pride in being a Town fan we really cannot thank Wray enough for taking a punt on Paolo I really cannot remember a Town manager as loved as this guy and in such a short time. I really hope we can do all it takes to fend off any other clubs as this could be the start of the road back to the top under PDC.

Savour the moment as these days dont happen many times for a club like ours. :wotjump:

Living in Singapore, thank god for interweb forums and youtube. Thanks to those who've uploaded footage of what looked like one of those days which become signposts in your life.

I had a ST in 1993 and it reminded me of those intangible feelings. A packed County Ground means so much and - unlike with the super rich clubs - it doesn't happen as often as we'd all like anymore, but when it does you really appreciate it.

I'm off for a leaving do in Bangkok next weekend. It'll be carnage and I'll be wearing my Town shirt throughout, with pride.

Well done everyone for playing your part.

We are Champions and a thoroughly enjoyable day that will live long in the memory!

Highlight seeing Caddis lift the Trophy and Ferry prancing around in his pants....great memories that will last in everyone of our minds forever!

Big appreciation to Jeremy Wray for bringing Paolo and his staff in, and well done to Paolo and the team for such a great season, party atmosphere at Bradford next week and to finish off the night had a decent chat with Alan McCormack and Jay Maceverly in a chicken outlet opposite TPs who said training will be light, Macca's best 2 weeks of his life and got myself a pic with the man himself(upload unavailable as too pissed to work my phone)

Anyways, Swindon Town FC League 2 Champions 2011/12 season get innnnnnnnnnnn!!!  :beers:

What a day. What a team. What a fucking celebration. Was in the CG Hotel after the match. Waited for every player to come out of the ground after to get pics. Nice close up of Ronan Murrays medal. He was first out but ended up leaving last beacause Benson had blocked him in. Saw Paolo and his entourage comming out to the car park and rushed back into the CG to tell everyone mid celebrations. We all piled out and fair play, he didn't just drive off but stayed a few minutes for pics and handshakes all round. Really up close and personal. Made my fucking day.

That were brilliant. The sight of nearly 13,000 Town fans singing "stand up for the Champions" across all four stands is a sight I never thought I would see at the CG. And to win in such style - none of this "it's 0-0 we desperately need an injury-time winner 'cos Shrewsbury are winning" bollocks. The sight of Town players parading a trophy - marvellous (I missed the presentation in 1996). And to cap it all off is the meltdown also known as Yellows forum.

And to all those managers who queried Paolo "what does he know about this League" Di Canio at the beginning? Stick that in your fucking pipe...

Brilliant way to (almost) finish the season - going up as Champions is just another part of this roller coaster ride that is Swindon Town. There are very few, if any, other clubs in the Football League who have jumped around the Divisions like us through either being Champions, automatic and play off promotion or unfortunately relegation sides. Hopefully we will have the "promotion bounce" that a lot of teams get when we kick-off in Division 1 next season and it can take us to the next level again. :1st:

What a day.

When I saw Storey in the squad I said to a mate, this could be another 6-0 even Ben Joyce scored type day... So close!

The nerves were evident during the first half as Port Vale showed themselves to be quite a good side. One of the better passing teams to come down here this season. Even so, they were a petty, whinging team, ready to chuck themselves to the floor.

Bostock put in another good display and set things up for a great day with that cut back to Ritchie and what a fantastic strike from the main man this season.

2nd half, we finally put someone to the sword just as Paolo had been hoping we'd do all season and what a day to do it. Once the 2nd goal went in the confidence just oozed out of us and made my resounding 3-0 prediction look somewhat conservative.

Looks like you all got shit faced last night. Good.

So over the 46 league games and numerous cup games we reach the end of the season, Bradford away excluded of course.

I said on this forum that we would win the league before the season started, I never wavered from that belief even when challenged by my work colleagues and Oxford based customers and anyone ELSE who felt it their place to question MY team, a team they never ever watched. I also predicted that once we hit top spot we would not relinquish that position and so it came to pass.

Highlights, pah, where do i start?

City, away. Beating all our "serious" competition whenever they came to challenge us. Beating higher league opponents in the three cups comps and getting to Wembley in the process. Ok so we were beaten but importantly for me was we did not lose to a better team and the lads and Paolo did not allow it to derail our ultimate goal of winning the div 2 championship. We also secured the Ronnie Radford award for our result against Wigan.

Yesterday was of course another highlight.

Low points. Not even losing the the scum, funnily enough, disappointed? Yes of course but I always felt that they flattered to deceive and we worked ourselves up into a stupor over beating them as if that was the one most important thing to happen all season above all else. Like they did about us and now it looks like that is all they have to crow about. Would you want to swap places with them? Me neither, they are where they are for a reason.

My four away league games, Shrewsbury, Macclesfield, Torquay and Aldershot all ended up in defeats but I never felt we would not get what we deserved.

Everyone from the Chairman down have played an intrinsic part in my enjoyment of this year. I hope that when I secure the two seats next to me on Tuesday as season tickets for my son and wife I can get closure on what has been one of the most enjoyable season I can ever remember.

I remember the relegation from the old 2nd division to the 3rd circa early 70's then the slide to the 4th the revival under Macari, premiership and back to the fourth up to the 3rd under sturrock and well you know the rest. Yes like a lot of the supporters my age who have hung around I've seen it all pretty much. I do think with the current board we have better foundations than we have ever had to go on an cement a permanent place in the championship. The ground redevelopment is paramount in that plan as we need more income and bigger gates to compete.

Onwards and upwards my fellow reds.

So proud to be a town fan at the moment, with the momentum we could take into the pre-season, and the right signings in the summer, next season is shaping up to be just as exciting as this one. I don't think the team or the fans could have done any more to persuade PdC that STFC is the place to be for a good few years yet.

I've stuck a few photos from yesterday online in case anyone's interested:

The role Bostock played yesterday really worked a treat for us - roaming all over, wanting the ball, creating a 5th man in midfield if he dropped off, and joining Benson when he needed to. It's the sort of role I think Rooney would revel in as well, after he tore us to shreds in that position for Gillingham earlier in the year. He'll naturally drift in and out of games, but on that evidence, I'd love to see him back here next season.

One of my favourite days following the Club of all time.

From the moment I caught my train at 8.55 and got in the door 10.10 it was perfect.

So many stories and memories........even got to meet Paolo after the match and hold the trophy.
The trains were full of singing as were the pubs.

The players were great.................it was buzzing.

Oxford was very quiet last night.

Have to agree it was a fantastic day

Can't stop singing "Top of the League" to myself, sad I know

Also met a fellow TEF'er on the train to Reading PetsWinPrizes. We played some weird game about naming past Town players, no one knew the rules

Also nice to meet Ginginho, who really doesn't look like Phil Mitchell or have very much ginger hair

With a few key signings in various positions, might well be singing that again next season.

Would like to think yesterdays atmosphere, performance etc would convince quite a few folks to buy season tickets.

I went upstairs earlier tonight after the kids had gone to bed and could hear my 8 year old in bed singing it, followed by 'Stand up for the Champions'.  Priceless!

Good lad. Hopefully he got a few anti Oxford chants in as well. You must be proud.

Getting we are the champions played in the SU and singing along to every word a particular highlight, along with someone other than myself dedicating a song to "the mighty Swindon town"
Haha I vaguely remember we are the champions coming on in the SU, think there was a fair few Town fans in there! Bumped into one outside Cuba while he was shouting how much he hated Oxford
Think that might have been me dedicating it to 'the mighty swindon town', cant remember what i chose though  :hmmm:

Was Cibocchi in attendance yesterday? I don't think Lanzano was there either.
I met both of them in the car park after the game, Cibocchi was bored as Jo Devera had blocked the car park up so he was pulling everyones windscreen wipers up & acting very childish ( the ariel through his flys kept him amused for ages ).

Just seen the sky sports highlights of this game, errors run throughout! Apparently this was our last game of the season, players names mixed up at least 3 times and Bostock's loan finished after the Vale game. Bad reporting annoys me immensely

(Before this thread disappears into the abyss)

Did anyone else watch the Port Vale players shooting practice before the kick-off? Some of the worst efforts I've ever seen.

The only player who was putting them in was a kiddy called Ryan Lloyd and he wasn't even on the bench.

After watching that I must say that it was hard to envisage anything other than a victory.

I have a group of Port vale fans that play 5 a side at my work Every Monday night - one of them particularly is lovely & always comes over for a chat about our teams
We had a chat Monday night & he told me after initially storming out after the 5th goal went in he came back & sat and watched us lift the trophy etc thought that was quite sweet of him
