As long as you don't have to pay a product fee!

Swap rates (what banks use to price mortgages) dropped today - not materially so, but may be worth shopping around if you can wait a few weeks and see if better offers continue to appear

I guess with the shopping around it depends on the amount of fees etc. Do you generally have to pay 'exit' fees if I was to leave Halifax and go elsewhere?

Not if your deal is up, but yes if you leave mid-deal (typically anyway, there are probably exceptions out there).

I think if they’ve put you on the SVR you can leave penalty free, but that’s beyond my area of expertise

Thanks both - appreciate that.

As we’re moving back in a few months, is there any advantage/disadvantage in just paying your bill in full as they arrive?

The major disadvantage is you will pay vastly more per month in the winter than you do the summer.

Are there not horror stories of the energy companies hiking people’s DD as they see fit.

British Gas gave us our bill this morning. Have a smart meter. Set DD that they arranged from October to March which they set based on projected usage etc.  Bill states we are now £740 in debit. Absolute cunts these companies are. Fuming!

I could pay it now but they can sit and swivel and fucking wait for it.

You could try asking for a payment plan, especially with their massive underestimate.

I'd be tempted to make them wait and drag it out with monthly repayments. But I also hate having unnecessary debt hanging around - just cleared a 0% PayPal offer and another 0% credit card because otherwise the amounts annoyingly linger at the back of my brain.

They review and adjust payments on your account every 6 months, unless you ring up and discuss it with them to trigger an interim review - i know this because the same thing happened to me

At least with eon they let you know fairly quickly if you need to increase your DD but I'm not on a smart meter
