but he seems to dislike films on the basis of how much the public like them, ie: if there's big attendences they're shit, if no ones ever heard of them, they're good.

generally i fair rule now though isnt it? anything thats slightly good and hollywoody gets hyped up beyond belief.

off the top of my head i think i've only seen two really good films in the past year / year and a half; inglorious basterds and no country for old men.

I watched him do a review of the year thing over Christmas, where he basically said said that all the box office hits were shit, then waxed lyrical over some obscure, foreign films.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm partial to the odd foreign film myself (Not top shelf) but he seems to dislike films on the basis of how much the public like them, ie: if there's big attendences they're shit, if no ones ever heard of them, they're good.

I always find Kermode very entertaining if not very useful for advice.

Interestingly someone on the radio was just backing Rhod Gilbert to take over the friday night show.  That would be good.

Kermode isn't as pretentious as I originally thought - for example he really likes the Twilight series and High School Musical which no pretentious adult would have ever admit!

I enjoy the Mayo and Kermode film review - well, I only listen to the podcast anyway.

Interesting how when people say foreign films they don't include hollywood in that. I guess it's cos of the language thing and the fact the british film industry output is tiny!!

I think most people are referring to foreign language films when they say that.

Someone came into HMV yesterday and complained that the English had been dubbed over with Italian within their copy of Life is Beautiful  - that sort of complaint is common.
