Title: Cheltenham is your mother
Post by: Warlord CTFC on Sunday, August 14, 2011, 19:02:50
When you think you can walk any competition and get carried away, then the superior Cheltenham acts like your Mam and slaps you around the ears to put you down a peg or two to show who is the mega boss.

Dont get too excited about your massive attendance for your first home game, Cheltenham. Seems like every other poster on here was in the home end on saturday.

There are forces at work, when it comes to Cheltnum, which are difficult to explain.  Spence asked the question, yet nobody has attempted an answer.

I'm not liking this....in 08/09, we started the season with a decent home win 3-1 against a team from the historic county of Cheshire.....everyone thinks we could be onto something...although a few doubts raised about the foreign import, recruited via agents and you tube.

Onto Cheltnum away, where despite having a number of chances our strike force of Paynter and Cox, cannot score, and we lose to their 10 men.

Such is the blow to confidence that we have one win in the next 11, which more or less seals the fate of the manager...we do however just about manage to avoid relegation.

A point at D and R would be acceptable....but di Canio really needs a win.

Why does Di Canio really need a win?

He's a new manager with a lot of new signings so it's bound to take a little bit of time to gel.  Don't think he'd be under any pressure unless he lost the next 5 or 6 matches on the bounce or soemthing equally unlikely.

I'm with Reg - we're on a terrible run of form, with no wins and no points from the last one games. Di Canio's job is now on the line. The thought that we might not be top of the league again for atleast another 2 weeks, possibly even months is an absolute disaster and is driving this club towards ruin. Anything but a win against Daggers and I can only see us going the way of Boston.

The defeat upset me Saturday, but after giving it some thought we beat Southampton around this stage of the season last year and they still got promoted so im not going to lose any sleep quite yet.

The general consensus among the more sensible posters at the start of the season, was that di Canio would either be very good or very bad....not just OK...new signings, time to gel, etc.  Signs of very good asap would be most welcome..

personally I think a good start is needed in order to build the belief and momentum that we need for promotion.  2 games and 3 points its far too early to judge.

I do share concerns on whether we are good enough and have brought in the right players.  again 2 games is nowhere near enough to judge.

there will be a bit of a knee jerk reaction should we be on 3 points this time next week mind !

So because some posters that you decree are sensible say he'll either be very good or very bad that means after two games he is already under pressure and needs to show immediate signs of greatness?!

Have a word with yourself Reg.

That's about it.....results driven business these days...Lou Macari, had a season to sort things out, before building a side capable of winning Div 4...di Canio will get a lot less.

Far from ignoring the Crewe game DRS, I pointed out the similarity with the Tranmere game of 08/09 a 3-1 win, and how the subsequent defeat at Cheltnum, helped derail our season....the fact that I'd like to see signs of di Canio being very good, indicates the exact opposite of what you're saying.

Part of the post, asks the question initially raised by Spence, why do we do so badly at Cheltnum?

BRING BACK KING!

I'm not worried about losing to Cheltnum, I still have faith in our squad, Rovers who everyone seemed to think would walk the league with King McGleish are on the same number of points as us and have conceded far more, the league won't settle down just yet, let us not shit ourselves.

There is no malice in the rivalry. But it is there. We need fans from the Gloucester/Stroud area and our record against them at Whaddon road is an embaressment.

I recall that Town's record points haul for the 4th tier (100 points +) under Macari in his second season saw 5 points earned from the first 8 games.

The pressure may be on earlier these days but results still come at the end of the season and not in the first 8 games let alone the first 2 or 3.

Yeah the farmers market is good for local organic goods. Best in the country a couple of years back. I haven't been for about a year though so don't know what its like now. I can't imagine its got any worse though.

If they are taking fans off us in our area then for me they are rivals.

I sometimes think that if we had fronted up to Reading a bit more then there would be less of the saddo's wearing their Reading kits around the Town. We declared them non rivals so these people dont see the shame in it.

Stroud seems to be an even split between us and the 2 Bristol teams. There aren't many Cheltenham fans around here tbf. Also know quite a few Villa fans in the Stroud area.

Hope you enjoy yours. There was nout sat suggesting you will be up the top at end of the season. All clubs bring in loads of signings we have had ten who need to settle. Trouble is some of your fans are like Bradfords  been in the premiership and think there to good for this division. But bradford have struggled to get out of the bottom ten for two years .Yes you have a bit of history but you are where you are because it's where you deserve to be like when you got to play off final you was there because you deserved to be there. We are a small club but we have been in the football league 11 years and spent four of them in league 1. every year the bookies right us of last season we was in play offs until exmas but it proved you need battlers and we had good football players who got bullied of the ball and we went on one mighty slide. this season we have mixed it up with a bit of talent and a bit of hard working players because teams like you we are not going to play off the park we just need to dig in and grind a result out and we did. We won't go down or up but mid table will be our aim.

There's a few of us in Cheltenham too - probably substantially more than Chelt fans in Wiltshire.

I think Cheltenham are struggling to find any real rivals - historically was Gloucester City but left them behind about a dozen years ago.  More recently they've had rivalry with Kidderminster (who lost their league place) and Rushden (not based on geography of course), who've also disappeared.

From what I pick up they hate the Pox and Hereford more than anyone, and this year share everyone's dislike for Crawley, especially after they poached last season's top scorer.
I think that for them beating us is a bit like getting one over on your big brother!

It's good to hear that tradition is maintained. I like that part of the world...used to drink sometimes with other Town fans in a pub near Standish, at the junction of the Gloucester line and one which ran up from Bristol. Beer, trainspotting and football. Take a bird with you and everything is sorted.

Don't suppose the pub is there now  :(
