Title: The Coronation

Just seeing if people are interested really....

If its on I'll glance at it (weather looks shit, Mrs will have it on).

There's a danger she'll find the prince Andrew/Epstein commemorative mug that I've added to her collection this weekend.

Will be working during the spectacle but, seeing as I have spent the majority of my working life in uniformed service, I would probably swear along if I were at home watching the TV

Can't bring myself to get worked up over it, but it is a load of weird bollocks. If it brings some joy to some people that's good I suppose. I'm certainly happy to get a day off work (although it would have been nicer if it wasn't in a month already full of days off, if I'm being picky!)

I will watch because its history, I doubt I will be around to see another one TBH.

Will have a few drinks just because I fancy them but I am by no means a royalist.

I'm not sure if the timing is annoying or not. We already have 2 Bank Holidays in May so in some ways it would have been nice to have it in June or July to break the gap between May and August up a bit.

That said, I'm using the time for visiting. My wife has been baking a LOT of coronation quiches and trifles for various events she arranges for people in sheltered housing and whilst they are delicious, I'm getting bored of testing them now! :)

I think I am in the same camp as Nemo, I've avoided the news a lot this week as I also think it's 'a load of weird bollocks'. But I know it brings joy to loads of people also so que sera.

Looking at the weather I suspect (much as with Brenda's funeral) that I will have a ride out on my bike in the morning for a few hours (exploiting the quieter roads) and then come home and likely watch whatever is on. When is the crowning bit scheduled for?

I did mention to the missus that I should probably watch it as I may not see another, but she pointed out that Brian is already 74 so who knows.

Don’t care about it to be honest.
A day off means very little when you’re retired 😂
I’d rather have Charles as head of state than some elected twat like BJ

Your 20 years younger than Charlie.
My old man went to London to see the Queens coronation, so this will be his second. He's at home this time though.

The royals annoy me, there's too many of them on the gravy train (and births are ahead of deaths unfortunately) and their bill to the taxpayer is grotesque, but as they're here may as well make the most of the pomp which brings joy to many.

And mine.  I'm curious, more than anything.  But don't feel any sense of pride in the spectacle.  The institution feels very outdated to me.

Suspect that this could be one of the last times (or maybe the last time) you see a ceremony on this scale.

They are essentially a tourist attraction these days.  Why don't we just do away with the people and simply have an election every so often for people to fill the role, maybe a TV reality show competition to replace Britains Got Talent.  They get a basic salary and work as actors for a year or two until the next one takes over.

I can't quite understand that some working class people are ok with the sheer lavishness of it all. And I don't buy that "oh they bring a lot of money into the country through tourism". I read that they account for 0.3% of our tourism income.

Why not just go to work citizen and make a stand, on the moral high ground. Embarrass all those part time socialists getting a freebe by jumping on the bandwagon. Rubbing shoulders with the international great and good. You could have your name up in lights on next weeks morning star or socialist worker.

It’s a shame that there has been so much vitriol in this thread. I’m proud to be British (even though I know the country is just a little bit shit). I don’t think any other country does as much pomp and majesty as us. I didn’t watch all of QE2’s funeral, but it was a hell of a spectacle. That will have been beamed all around the world and will be what people remember about Great Britain. That is a much better advert for tourism than you could make up for Minehead, Skegness or Blackpool!

I’d much rather the country be remembered for pomp and majesty rather than being represented by sunburned football shirted, tattoo wearing, foul mouthed drunken thugs that I see when abroad on holiday.

Having said that, I won’t be watching. I’ll catch the highlights and will enjoy the bank holiday.

President, not as expensive? You are joking aren’t you? Whatever a President May or may not spend pails into insignificance when net income is taken into account. The monarchy bring in hundreds of millions of £’s annually in tourism and international business, global influence and so on to GB PLC balance sheet.

Not forgetting that Charles has along with the late queen overseen a massive overhaul of the civil list of payments and a greater level of self funding than there was.

Be careful what you wish for.

Should you be under the illusion on an international level our country is insignificant or has no influence you are greatly mistaken.

The royal family costs the BTP £300m- £500m per year, the Coronation cost us an extra £100m - £150m this year.  The Royal family bring in £2bn a year.

If you didn't have the Monarchy, our head of state would be voted in, so you would always have ~50% of the population not liking our head of state.  If we didn't have a royal Monarch, our head of state in recent years would have been Cameron, May, Boris, Truss and now Sunak - just think about that for a moment..

The royal monarchy is not for all, I get that..  and I am not a royalist.  But having your royal monarch designated for you and seperate from politics is a definite positive and the £1.5bn net it generates for the country is not to be sniffed at.

Politics aside, as LL says - be careful what you wish for.

Thanks for that. Not forgetting international influence in more ways than just money. I’d further that by saying how much our monarchy are revered and respected abroad by countries ordinary citizens.

Just ask the French how great it is having a President right now or the Sherman tanks for that matter.

0.3 % of our tourism income. And that 0.3% is mainly through ticket sales to "royal attractions" which would still be there, monarchy or not. It's a myth appropriated by royal acolytes that there is tourism income that is solely based on us having a monarchy.

If there is a surplus then what's the problem? It's bad enough having politicians who are voted in. History and tradition is rich in this country, why change it because a few get the hump about it?

0.3 % of our tourism income. And that 0.3% is mainly through ticket sales to "royal attractions" which would still be there, monarchy or not. It's a myth appropriated by royal acolytes that there is tourism income that is solely based on us having a monarchy.

Apart from an extra day off now and then, what is it about the Monarchy that affects your life on a day to day basis, that brings you to the conclusion that you would rather be France? If you genuinely feel that then you daily life must have little or no interaction with the French, apart from what you see on the news.  They a massive (pun) Royal (pun) pain in the arse.

Think you may have quoted the wrong post.
As for being more like France,I'd say that,as an OAP, the extra 5 grand a year my french counterparts receive would be a start!🙂
