All those that think or feel the Oasis is a worthwhile fit for purpose, profitable going concern should be asked to put their money where their mouths are and buy shares in the place. There is a valid reason why the current owners/leaseholders don’t think it’s viable and those are the same reasons why the snowdome development hasn’t kicked off yet. Covid has put the frighteners on business risking £10’s & £100’s of millions on them.
I also expect those squaking about its salvation would probably have been happy to see the county ground flattened because it was a waste of tax payers money, conveniently forgetting the council didn’t pay a penny towards its rental or upkeep. Mind you in the end Pee Lower didn’t either.
Typical conservative attitude. It's not supposed to be a viable business, it's a municiple health buidling. IE it provides other benefits to the community/population beyond fucking money.

Gonna channel reg here and say that the 80's expansion of swindon is why we got stuff like the link centre and oasis. The expansion of the town paid for the publicly funded amenities, now we have faceless expansion and nothing apart from profit for some cunts.

You mean the council borrowed the money to build things.

Not necessarily, expansions lead to vast uplifts in Council revenues which in the old days Councils could then spend on civic and community facilities. Typical conservative attitude. How did the Oasis end up in private ownership? I know up here the trend has been for LA's to pass off leisure facilities to third party organisations run on a more commercial basis and there is now a fuss that certain swimming pools and leisure centres are not being reopened after Covid which is pissing a lot of people off.

I'll mention that to the developers of the couple of leisure schemes we are presently advising on, they have continued with their schemes throughout the pandemic understanding that people still need things to do. What is sitting higher up the risk analysis tables is the effect that Brexit is having on obtaining building materials and what happens next year when the next tranche of equivalence agreements cease. I also expect those squaking about its salvation would probably have been happy to see the county ground flattened because it was a waste of tax payers money, conveniently forgetting the council didn’t pay a penny towards its rental or upkeep. Why would the council be paying rent regarding a building it owns the freehold on and contributing to the upkeep of a building let on a full repairing lease?

Covid being a reason the Snowdome hasn't kicked off is a stretch - it was proposed before I moved to the USA and has been stuck at artists drawing stage for years. It always looked like a Trojan horse to get the Oasis to be honest - but that HAS been scuppered by Covid. They were sat on the benefit of a safe leasehold with Rent coming through the doors and no nee to go investing heavily. The sub leaseholders were pushed under water (pun intended) by Covid and left them hanging. Seems ironic they have suddenly managed to come up with a plan for knocking down the Oasis and re-building - I imagine some grants and loans will be in order, which is where these private companies make the real dosh. Just look at the water industry - all the money is made on capital investment projects, not the profits.

You’re right, Covid isn’t the cause, I never said it was, it’s down to as always economics, something a vast amount of the population it would appear fail to grasp along with a number on here. None of you would risk your own money on an investment that you were not sure of. Neither hopefully would or should any council. You must understand that the thinking mans beano readers comments are posted by the same old same old professional moaners, none of which probably have a few beans to rub together in real terms. The oasis, has been a dump since the mid 90’s and only a massive amount of capitol to either repurpose, renovate or a complete rebuild would suffice against a backdrop of many people using other privately funded gyms with pools and equipment, which it would seem has plateaued out. For me I used to take my oldest to the coral reef at Bracknell on Saturdays due to the state of the oasis. With hindsight the oasis ought to have been demolished, redeveloped as someone suggested into a Uni campus and the money invested into a bigger and better link centre. Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course. I have always doubted the snowdome development. The motives proven or otherwise of the developers is another question. Going back to the oasis I expect one of you politically motivated to suggest or accuse the conservative council of being the harbingers of its demise but as I said as far back as the mid 90’s ( I’m sure we have had a Labour controlled council since then) it was clear considerable investment would be needed for the building with a limited shelf life, same goes for the Link centre, which as a west Swindon resident since about 2000 I’ve hardly used. If I could afford to have a David Lloyd membership i bloody would but even this Tory scum has to draw the line somewhere. As for you socialist parasites I’d suggest coate water if you’re desperate for a swim and a free shower. 😉😁

You'd think that making any saves at all would be a bit of a giveaway that it is perhaps not a woman
