Title: Crawley v Swindon Town pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: swindonmaniac on Sunday, December 31, 2023, 22:00:33
Anyone interested in this one ??.  Pretty late to start a thread but it’s got to be done.
Don’t know what to expect from this one, players out there putting in a shift but just can’t seem to get it together as a team.
FGR Didn’t make it easy for us but this will be a much harder game.   Can’t see past a defeat but would be happy with a point, although not holding my breath.

Another one for a 2-1 win, 89th minute Kemp winner, Young the other.

They have 2 CBs suspended and Conroy went off injured last game.

Although they got beaten by Franchise last time they played them off the park apparently!

Got to say, Lindsey has done well there when most expected them to be rock bottom.

Like to think New Year may bring a change of fortune.

I think a win, albeit a close one. Is FBT back? If so, I'd like to see this(think Minturn needs a break)
                           Ward
       UGM.        Brewitt.        FBT
Hutton.       Kinsella  Khan.   Shade
                Cain.              Kemp
                          Young

Pre match lost forever in a happy crowd in The Jubilee Oak.
I do wonder if The Cure's unrelenting early gloom was down to spending their formative years in Crawley.

As a fan base we are probably at 2nd or 3rd Cure album levels of misery.
Little Faith remains that's for sure & the joy of 1st Jan 2020 at Plymouth seems a long time ago now.

Five members of the match day 18 from one year ago still remain.
Was thinking whether we'd be better off with Lindsey still in charge. Much of a muchness I suspect, but we are 5 points worse off after 25 games.

Would Conroy, Gladwin & Darcy make the first team now?
The squad would certainly benefit.

A not too difficult quiz question to start the year.
Name the 2 keepers who played for both clubs?

Anyway happy new year to you all, miserable fuckers & the more cheerful alike.
Here's hoping for a better year for the club, both on & off the pitch.

One bit of hope for a positive result is that Kemp & Young will want to go out on a high with goals and / or assists.

So I'll go 1-0, Austin, from a pinpoint Hutton cross.

Aye.
The other one has appeared on LSPOD.
Not a huge amount of appearances across 16 odd clubs.

As we all know today is Swindon rejects vs Swindon with them having Kellan Gordon, Dion Conroy, Ben Gladwin, Ronan Darcy,  Scott Lindsey, Jamie Day, Steve Hale & Ricky Mcfarlane on their playing and backroom staff.

We have only won at Creepy twice ever, a 4-0 win with Doyle scoring a hattrick and Yates grabbing the other in 2019 and a 3-0 in 2011 when Kerrouche x2 and Connell grabed the goals.

We have lost our last 2 visits there and in the 10 meetings we have only those 2 wins and Creepy getting 3 and 5 ending as draws.

Lindseys slow plodding passing game should suit our play as it did at the CG they looked almost as bad as FGR when we thrashed them 6-0 earlier in the season when Young got 4 of the goals. No doubt they will be out for revenge.

Correct. Wouldn't expect anything else from a Bob!

Jimmy Glass certainly had his 15 mins of fame from his career.
Decent keeper from what I remember, just fell foul of a manager or two in his time here.

He would get into this team currently ahead of any other CB option we have. He always had 1 or 2 mistakes in him each game, but so does Brewitt, Dokes, FBT or Minturn. Its just that often when Conroy made the mistake it ended with us conceding a goal.

I think there is far too many for it to just be bad luck. It has to come down to training and fitness management surely.

Well the rumour going around was Flynn and Hartwell just walked out of training the other week because Adam Hart was demanding his son and co train with the first team.

They've probably checked out and just waiting for a pay out.

The 1st 9 games I thought we played some brilliant attacking entertaining football, but once we got found out we had no plan B and thats what has cost us.

Flynn needs to recognise when a formation will not work and change it to suit rather than sticking to his guns at all costs.

Defensively though we have been pretty shit all season, that should have been rectified early on but wasn't so for that reason its entirely down to Flynn and Clem.

Had enough of Flynns 1 dimensional tactics and defensive ineptitude now though and want a change of direction on and off the pitch.

I get not being enamoured - that’s for enough.

Obviously now with 6 months hindsight, his tenure at Swindon has gone exactly as it did at Walsall but back in May there was just as much possibility it would have gone similar to Newport & Walsall was the anomaly.

I’ve lost patience with him now but certain didn’t think the current situation was a foregone conclusion back in May

TBF most people did think it was a foregone conclusion once the transfer window slammed shut, even when we were doing well there were lots of voices saying that we will drop once the inevitable injuries kick in.  And let's not forget, unless we are told the truth, Flynn is 100% responsible for player signings and won't sign players unnecessarily, quality over quantity and all that.

I am not saying that Flynn should go, but now he has his long contract I would like to hear him get off of the company bandwagon once and a while

Under any previous regime, even Power, Flynn gets the sack at this point.

Yes, the club is an absolute shitshow but I’ve never seen a more poorly set up XI, with the same basic failings on show week after week. Pathetic.

Flynn should be sacked. I made a post a while ago about this. Yes injuries, yes small squad. But he has failed to correct simple mistakes, change tactics, and not a single player has got better. He did well to get Kemp in, and got very lucky with Young. But people like FBT and McEachran who most people thought were decent have gone backwards this season.

Flynn out.

I just find it quite odd the whole Flynn flexibility thing. The story is that he played the way Newport did because they had to due to the pitch - which shows a degree of pragmatism. But apparently he now has no pragmatism at all? It's like he's not the same guy at all.

Probably realised it’s better financially to join a club, work 6-9 months, get sacked, get the pay off & go again rather than staying at the same club for years.

Sheridan was in L1 and wasn't shipping goals at the astonishing rate Flynn is.

It has been said before but any self respecting Chairman would have had Flynn marched off the premises by the time Aldershot scored their seventh goal.

As someone said the other day, no player could defend effectively in this system. There’s not even an attempt to set up the defence to succeed. Sorry Flynn, time to go.

I think I called this around the Crewe home game, that we don't have any "defensive" players.  We have people playing in roles with the word back/defender in them, but they do not enjoy the dirty work of being a defender.  Minturn & Brewitt like a one on one challenge, but very little else that is required.  Everyone wants to be a ball player first.  My description after that game was that our defence looked as limp as a rich tea biscuit that had been left in the cup for 30 seconds.  It's not improved since then.  You cannot set-up the way we do, with the players we have and expect to maintain any sort of form - the goals against are just killing any chance of that.

Well, however dire that was,and it was,we still had more and better chances than them. I stand by my opinion that he was the worst possible choice as manager from the names that were bandied about at the time. He's always been a one dimensional manager, completely incapable of changing things when it's going badly. He'll say yet again that we "have to stop giving away avoidable goals" then do nothing about it. Not that anyone else would turn us into world heaters but Flynn has definitely overseen several players going backwards, especially Khan and McEachran

Correct. Truly bizarre and can only be related to skulduggery of some nature in my opinion.

Flynn’s agent is? Club can’t give money directly so Flynn gets an extension and the agent/agency get money for another x years. It’s ‘laundering’ or ‘washing’ money legitimately.

This is getting reminiscent of Sheridan/Power.

Cunt of an owner that won't sack the manager as he doesn't give a fuck about anything other than fleecing us and a shite manager who has completely lost the players that won't have the decency to resign.

Flynn is a prick. Takes absolutely no blame whatsoever for this shambles again. He's Sheridan 2.0. Can't stand him.

The only way he could gain any respect from me is if he walked now.

Andrew Hawes gives him every chance to not come off as an arrogant, delusional wanker but he never takes them.

Flynn:
- Not good enough
- Finishing was poor
- Decision making
- Second best first half
- Actually had some good chances
- The goals we gave away....nowhere near good enough
- A lot of them need to look at their performances and evaluate what they are going to get out of the game
- Concede 50 goals: Too open at times. Too easy to get crosses in. Players free in the box. Lack of desire. Understanding of the game. You can look at a whole lot of things!
- Goalscoring: Today we created some good chances. How Young missed Flynn doesn't know. Should have had a penalty. Cain could have scored. Not dressing it up, we weren't good enough today. Too easy to score against
- Brewitt injury didnt help. Didnt want to start Kokolo (especially in that position) as he has been ill. But adrenaline should have got him through
- A few on that pitch quite frankly weren't at the standard required
- Needs new personnel with a better mentality and a better work ethic
- Flynn's job to try to attract new players and improve the squad
- The injuries have not helped.
- Has tried to back players in the press, but there are certain aspects of that that has nothing to do with injuries. Very disappointed
- Squad number fatigue?: Not been ideal with 5 CBs out for a few weeks.
- FBT out: He is a senior lad and gives natural balance so we can create more attacks as well
- Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong
- Professional pride: Orsi could have done anything he wanted today. He looked a Championship player. If I was one of the defenders I would be taking that personally
- Echoes of Walsall?: Yes, its tough. Its hard with injuries. You have to try to work hard. Bring players in to strengthen the squad
- Performance made something snap in you?: Yes, Flynn can say that now that the window is open. Flynn has chance to bring players in now. But its not just Flynn saying it. The club captain and vice captain has just said that in the dressing room.
- They have had some home truths! Its got to change soon!
- There is a lot of improvement needed
- If they are not up for it, they will have a very short career!
- Should know more about ins when he gets on the bus
- Kemp and Young going back to parent clubs. They will be a big miss for us, especially Kemp
- A lot of them in there could learn something from Dan Kemp. He is what a professional should be. Work ethic and desire. He'll be a big miss
- We have almost got one player in. Hoping for 2-3 more by saturday
- Looking at incomings straight through the spine. Want to change the mentality. Need to change the mentality of near enough all of them. Need experience ones and ones with right attitude to influence those younger ones who think they can coast through as a pro footballer
- GK is a position Flynn is looking at, but they have to be better than Ward. Won't sign a GK for the sake of it

We have to stop them getting crosses in? Seriously? Maybe have the wing backs play wing back then, and not level with the front 2 so they have to recover 80 yards to defend.

Not picking people up in the middle? It’s because your centre backs get pulled all over the shop into wide areas. Go and have a look at the Forest Green goal. Brewitt was covering left back, and Minturn left upfield, so when the cross came in, our “back 3”
consisted of UGM and Kinsella!

Saying that we miss Blake-Tracey’s attacking balance sums it all up! He is delusional.

Hawes:
- Flynn's frustration with the current squad was palpable
- Two players signed by Flynn have scored 28 goals in Young and Kemp. UGM has been a visible defender. Kinsella has settled in midfield
- There are a lot of players he has inherited from the analytic decision making of the previous regime from last year that ended up mid-table. We are mid table again. Where do you put the blame this year? Manager? Players?
- There was work going on in the background. There were a number of calls floating around the interview ahead of the game
- Flynn has a 3 year deal. 2.5 years left. Wondered whether there would be a shifting on of elements of the squad. Maybe moulding the future is what this season is about?
- 13 league games without a clean sheet: UGM and FBT have played in most of those.
- Austin and FBT had their say at the end of the game.
- Flynn didnt hold back at half time according to the steward near the dressing room. More evidence that today is a watershed day and patience with the dressing room has been lost
- Chairman: Has been there today, Wrexham, Tranmere and FGR. Has been speaking to Flynn after each game.
- Seems Chairman is backing his man
- How many new faces is radical? Need a minimum of 6 to build the squad, stabilise this year and look towards next year. Radical could end up being in double figures!
- Give Scott Lindsay a lot of credit. Only just survived last year and has recruited from the fringes of the football league to put together a competitive team.
- Swindon keep cycling through managers and we keep failing. Just like England with the 'golden generation'.

Sorry, it’s a bit fair fetched the blame the data analytic recruitment of last season on us being this shite this season.

Hutton, Khan & Shade are probably the only first team regulars recruited under that model. Cain as well I guess. Hutton has his strengths & weakness and whilst Khan hasn’t been blameless he’s hardly been the worst offender. Shade has been hit & miss.

FBT never fit the model. RHM was bought in by Lindsey himself. McEachran & Brewitt by Morris.

Of course - the main & obvious recruitment related thing from last season (that is still hurting us this season) is we have good attacking wing backs who can’t defend. That does not mean Flynn has to play fucking wing backs does it? Don’t do it, change formation or bring in other wing backs?

…and of course we’ve just had Darcy waltz through our back line - a player not only identified by the analytic model but one we also bombed out…

I’d also argue the model wasn’t the problem last season per say.

It was the rigidity we followed the model with. That recruitment strategy needed to be used for 40-50% of our recruitment rather than the 95% of it we did. In isolation the players weren’t/aren’t that bad but we never recruited the seasoned experienced pros to glue that team together…

Hang on, hang on!

Hawes was providing discussion points. He was saying that we are mid table again. He was saying that this could be because we still have the same nucleus from the previous failed regime or perhaps it is down to the manager. But the fact that the manager has been given a long term deal suggests that the chairman has more faith in him than he does in the squad that was assembled last year. It would seem that Clem is backing Flynn to build for the long term.

The point about England and the golden generation, was that England seemingly had a lot of talent but kept chopping and changing managers. England subsequently didn’t reach its potential. So, Hawes was suggesting that we shouldn’t be too surprised if we keep failing if we keep changing managers. He was NOT saying that we should keep Flynn.

I’m not sure it’s even factually accurate.

Sven had 3 international tournaments.

McClaren didn’t qualify so rightly sacked.

Capello got 4 years.

Hardly chopping and changing.

Just a bizarre comparison.

United fan - behave.

Don’t have & never have had a ‘second team’ or a ‘premier league team’ unlike the plastic scousers who have turned up.

Calm down.

Honestly why do you go?
Not a dig, but you say the same thing every week, if it made me feel like that I’d knock it on the head, even if only for a few weeks.

I know it’s not a dig Mate.
Even I question the sanity why I still do it, always have I guess.

I've not trawled through the whole thread so apologies if this has already been mentioned but was anyone else surprised to see 'Darcy' playing at centre forward for them and even wearing the no.9 shirt? Same height, same build, same hair style complete with alice band.

Even when Mrs Taylor pointed out that the bloke wearing no.10 with the skinhead haircut had Darcy on the back of his shirt, I said in all seriousness and without irony...."Well what are the chances of them having two players called Darcy?"....I was that convinced that 'fake' Darcy was in fact 'real' Darcy...it was only when his picture came up on the big screen with his name underneath after scoring the first goal that I realised my error

That was the one remotely light moment in an otherwise dire and miserable afternoon. Agree with every word you say Dukey...I can't imagine I'll be going again this season. Just awful....

I turned my stream on as they were lining up for the minute silence.
I wondered if Darcy was playing so studied the Crawley players there and it did take a second to work out Darcy was the skinhead and fake Darcy was not Darcy.

To be fair, that was because he wasn't really that good and we did sign Kemp on loan to fill the main role he used to cover.  For half a season it has been a good decision, the loan bit may even that out if we end up thinking Aguiar is the answer to any questions we have.

A L2 mid table battle. We lost. We were poor
Yes it hurts but for me, nowhere near the seemingly suicidal levels of some who should know better. Yet.

Two managers a year won't work either unless we get a proper derisable budget expert in.
The guy from Accrington maybe or whoever got Morecambe promoted to L1.

Yeah, the manager & coaching staff need to shoulder some blame but come on, 7 down against Aldershot, let's face it this squad isn't fit for purpose & needs to be dismantled big time.

Thought that relatively minor surgery would be enough after last season. I was wrong.

Always read your level headed posts and equally you watch the dross with your own eyes.
What is frightening is the game, no matter what is 11 v 11 and I am struggling to see how much better these players are against other Clubs with less fanbase than ours.
That scares me.

All about January for me, the rumour mill on the terraces yesterday in full flow.
We are simply in free full and need a few players back. Losing Kemp and Young will hit us hard.

No faith in Clem and want to be proved wrong.
Year on year budget cuts, poor decision making has delivered this shit show and I am not surprised.
Ironically our 2 best players were from clubs in the same league deemed surplus to requirement, both clubs not challenging. Reality is calling and we are what we are.

Don’t even waste your time Mate, from selling the Club, to a major investor that Clem wants in, to a big budget January, already been given a big budget but Flynn didn’t want to use it, other investors wanting the club etc, etc.

It’s a pile of shit and the club is a shambles on and off the pitch.

No rumours are factual and until we see anything official suggest it’s business as usual.
Only my opinion but it’s likely to get worse before better.

Got an ST, live in Swindon, may as well go to hone.

Been to 3 away I think, it's nice to do it with the youngest now he's interested. mostly streamed though

I wondered if there was no stream, as it was when I was a kid, how it would pan out.  I would go but rarely stood in the Townend. It was a no brainer! It feels like loads on a match day are streaming, even those that have contributed 1000's of contributions. If there were no streaming, would we loose them altogether or increase attendances!!!

Historically I think that the TEF was primarily a place where out of town supporters could gather & hold forth.

Not sure about more recent times but probably a goodly number still stream from afar or not so far in some cases.
It's the frequency that might vary.

It's one of those periods where closing a browser is probably more preferable to marching down the steps of the DRS early.

Work hours & family life means it is x100000 times easier to put the football on the tv than to actually go to games.

This isn't a statement I thought I would be making very often, but I'm kind of in agreement with DiV.

Moving out of London means getting to (home games at least) matches is more of an effort and having to now commute into London 3 times a week means that the last thing I want to do on a Saturday is more travelling. I'll watch the game on tv, which doesn't always work very well, but that doesn't irk me too much. It's not just the lost time either, as DiV also alluded to, it can be an expensive day out. I still enjoy my visit to the odd games with my dad, but we've both lost interest over the years. When we first started going quite regularly there was a good group of us that used to meet up, but due to death and lost interest it's really only me and him now. We try and get to a game once every 6 weeks depending on weekend plans.

I think I mentioned before that the pandemic flicked a bit of a switch in my head and I didn't actually miss when there was no football on, it provided an opportunity to do other things. I still look forward to the Swindon games, that will never change, but i'm just not as bothered if we win, lose or draw as I used to be, it's out of my control so I don't sweat it so much. This puts me in a huge minority, but I don't mind that, each to their own.

Wobbly Bob's comment is also spot on. I signed up on here when I lived in Edinburgh or Luxembourg I think and it was a great way of keeping in touch with other STFC fans who were closer to home. I've never had an addictive personality, but oddly this place is the closest thing to something I've become addicted to, which is a testament to the people who have posted here over the years.

As I’ve spent 14 of the last 20 years living outside of the UK I’ve still, just about, got some umph about wanting to attend. I find viewing on iPTV a hard watch - don’t know why.

We shall not be renewing our STs unless something dramatic happens.

I think age plays a part.

Message boards aren’t the used media anymore - the only people who tend to use them are those that started using them when they were the only way to talk about whatever subject with like minded people.

I expect most of us signed up in our teens / early 20 which would have made most of students and / or relatively new in the work force.

20+ years later and we are late 30s / early 40s and will have a combination of careers, mortgages, spouses & kids - unless your DMR & you just have an extensive criminal record.

All of which impacts the affordability & time needed to get to games.

I also expect with how easily accessible content from any of the big clubs in world football is now a days - that a lot of our kids (and future generations in general) will pick their team rather then being lumbered with one. Plus again, it’s way too bloody expensive for families.

When I was younger STFC was my life. It’s all I really did. My mood would be completely dictated by Swindon’s results. When we won great, I’d be happy till the next game. When we lost I’d be in a shitty mood till we won again. It became an addiction, a really shitty unfulfilling addiction that consumed me. All my mates were meeting their future partners, settling down, having kids & I was going to Walsall away (again) fully expecting us to lose (again) not remotely looking forward to it (again) and having the day put cost north of £50 (again)

Thankfully appointing Paul Hart was the straw that broke the camels back and I stopped going.
One of the best decisions I ever made in life.

If we weren't in the state we were in, I'd be choosing going to the games over watching at home 9 times out of 10. Early this season being able to ignore the off the field issues for a bit with it being good on the pitch and before Clem completely shit the bed, I was reminded that I love it.

Sitting at home just doesn't compare. I'd probably only chose the odd Tuesday night game from home over going if things were good just really down to the convenience of getting home from work and getting home after, etc.

Now I'm not even turning my firestick on to watch it from home for free.

Like many, i'm finding it hard to get any enthusiasm to go currently and probably won't go tomorrow.

Having said that, my 7 1/2 year old lad has really got into football this season, both playing and watching and has loved going to the games, especially the Junior Robins room, where he can meet a couple of players pre-match, and there's loads to do in there too.
Caroline and the rest of the team have done a cracking job in there.
