Title: Swindon Town v Crawley pre match drivel and matchday thread
Post by: 4D on Thursday, August 24, 2023, 10:13:58
Super manager Scott Lindsey brings the giants of Sussex to the CG this weekend.
Creepy have started off OK this season, although 3 out of 4 games have been at home. Their only away league match to date was a draw at Salford.

We should win this, but any silly defending may cost us.

Swindon 4-4 Creepy att: 8,772 (297 away)

Our most difficult game to date.
Crawley, most people's pick for relegation, but have started well and by all accounts were unlucky to lose against Gillingham.
No complacency and the fans will need to do their bit.

Crawley drew at Salford. Their defeat was home to Gillingham.

I saw them play Franchise, and I strongly expect a Swindon win.

I'm going for a statement win.

5-2 Town. Austin hat-trick.

Crawley race into a 2-0 lead. Box entries galore. Max chest thumping. "Lindsey, Lindsey give us a wave" from their fans etc.

Then it all goes wrong for them, culminating in a chippy interview where he doesn't look at the camera.

Swindon have met Crawley 19 times, winning just 5 times and drawing 7 and losing 7 times, scoring 26 and conceding 23 goals.

In the 9 games at the CG Swindon have only won 3 times with 2 draws and 4 defeats, scoring 13 and conceding 12 goals.

Since 2010 it has been LWWDLLLDW

Last season Austin and Cain scored in the last game of the season to give us a 2 goal lead at HT and they scored a pen in the 2nd half with the game finishing 2-1 to Town in front of 10,450 with Creepy bringing a respectable 528 fans.

6 of that starting Crawley team are no longer at the club and they have brought in 13 new signings in the Summer.

Just 2 of the starting players for Swindon are no longer at the club, Brynn in goal and Laviner at LB.

Early season favourites for relegation Crawley currently sit happily in 8th place after 4 league games with 2 wins and 1 draw, scoring just 4 goals and conceding 3 so far. 5 games 2w 1d 2l in all games.

By comparison we sit in 13th place and have played 3 league games with 1 win and 2 draws so far scoring 9 and conceding 8, 2 points behind our opponents with a game in hand. 5 games 1w 4d 0l (in 90 mins).

In their 5 games so far Crawley have
L2 Crawley 1-0 Bradford
LC Exeter 2-1 Crawley
L2 Salford 1-1 crawley
L2 Crawley 2-1 MKD
L2 Crawley 0-1 Gillingham

In our 5 games so far
LC Peterborough* 1-1 Swindon
L2 Swindon 2-2 Crewe
L2 FGR 1-2 Swindon
L2 Wrexham 5-5 Swindon
EF Swindon 2-2 Arsenal*

Crawley have spread their 4 goals between 4 players.

We have 2 players Dan Kemp and Jake Young both on 3 goals each and 4 other players are on a single goal so far.

This season they have been playing either 3421 or 3412 with Darcy sat in the number 10 role and Conroy in the middle of a back 3 with ex Town loanee Kellan Gordon at RWB. They also have Ben Gladwin and Anthony Grant in their squad but both have yet to make an appearance so far this season.

Crawley have a 58% average possession
14 shots per game
3 shots on target per game
4 corners per game

Against them the average
11 shots per game
4 on target shots per game
5 corners per game

By comparison

Swindon have a 53% average possession
16 shots per game
6 shots on target per game
5 corners per game

Against us the average
18 shots per game
8 on target shots per game
6 corners per game

Stats look fairly similar but we average more shots on target per game but we also average more shost on our goal per game. Crawley will not be a pushover at all and looks a draw on paper and current form of both teams.

Also how about irony, Creepy fans hinting that they are lucky to have Wagmi and not Clem in charge!  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick: and a subtle dig at paying our ticket prices, thats because you are visiting a proper league ground not a pokey little dump.

40 odd mile journey with a railcard costs me under £7.  Yet if I go on a 20 mile journey with another operator it costs £12.  Don’t know how they work the fares out but I’m obviously on a winner with GWR (when they decide to work).

Regards the CB and if Flynn is being honest then this is the first time I've disagreed with him about squad composition.

Our defensive record to date is poor, a significant part of that is to do with the gung ho tactics but I believe a better CB would help. Maybe he sees a DMF as more important which is fair.

I'd like to think that's a negotiation tactic, if Edwards/another is still holding out for more money, publicly saying we're keen to bring that profile of player in wouldn't help.

He's probs done the interview fresh from a training sesh. The jacket looks like it was new one straight out the packet though.

My observation was how his tan and hair dye is slowly seeing him morph into PB

They have been looking to offload him since Christmas, on an alleged £5k per week, cost cutting exercise, he is probably better than Barrow though, Orient wanted him but baulked at his wages.

That will weaken the Creeps for today hes been ever present so far in the league this season.

Apparently he has a home 11 miles from Barrow and comes from Lancashire.

No way will they pay that wage, he will have taken a 50% pay cut I would think, I doubt a fee of more than £50k was involved either, not like Telford is that good really. If he has a home 11 miles from Barrow then he can afford to take a huge pay cut I am sure.

They really pushed the boat out to make him their marquee signing evidently. It's clearly not worked out at all for all parties. His stock has taken a battering, I imagine he must be thinking about sacking his agent!

Trying to get my head round which ex players we will see today. Looking like it’ll only be Conroy and Darcy. Conroy was the only one who didn’t feature last time out against us (before Darcy signed) It’ll be interesting to watch Conroy play and see how he copes with our forwards.

Hoping RHM gets a run out at some point. Shade will need to impress if he’s used today or else I’ve a feeling he might be sent out on loan till Jan.

To try and watch the match for free.

Not convinced the hotel Wi-Fi has enough strength plus no guarantee the family will let me sit down in the same spot uninterrupted with my phone between 3 & 5 anyway - hence not wanting to spend money which might be wasted.

Plus, assume some here might have season tickets but go to a few home games and predominantly use it for away games…

Lindsey has gone for a few players in the Summer who have played at level 7 or lower, big risk but very cheap wages.

Namely St Albans, Bromley, Oxford City, Cray Valley Paper Mills and Brackley.

It's interesting, clearly have a lot to play for as many of them probably would have thought they wouldn't get an EFL chance. Shouldn't underestimate them, they've done well, but at the same time I find it hard to imagine a team where Ronan Darcy is one of the senior players could possibly be much cop. Guess we'll find out.

Darcy is a decent player and I didnt mind him coming off the bench but hes far too lightweight to start regularly.

Imo that's a generous opinion on Darcy. Mansfield away, and then some home came when he was the only threat and shot from 30 yards. That's about it for me last season.

I mean iv been wrong before but I can't see anything on him and annoyed the hell out of me. *

I had forgotten how fucking dull it was watching a Lindsey team, 14 passes and it crosses the half way line, we have it and 2 touches and we are attacking down the wing.

Could have been a yellow for McEachran.

We've already agreed Adje is paying, don't worry about it.

More silly football, but we're winning. Feels like it should be easier to teach a creative team how to defend than the reverse, so happy to be in the position.

Such an open game. Both sides could, and probably should, have scored 3. Slight concerns defensively, feel we are getting carried away with the need for our defenders to constantly be going forward, which leaves Brewitt horribly exposed. So far, he’s held his own though.

Of course, but the difficulty is the same things that are making us weak in defence are making us good in attack - runners pouring forward from defence/midfield. Just need to make better decisions about when to go and when to cover I think, I really hope it'll come in time.

Kemp was outstanding in that move.
I suspect many will go for Young as MotM, but Kemp has been at the heart of everything good from Town

Currently averaging 3.25 goals per league game. You'd take it over the season...

Almost hitting Gunningball numbers

Difference here to last week is that Crawley's heads went down after the second goal. Wrexham's went up - maybe it's the manifest destiny of being Wrexham, maybe it's a sign of which club really believes they should be winning matches.

Well, we won't finish this season with any regrets about whether we should have gone for it a bit more, in terms of attacking.  The best way I can describe it is a much better on the eye version of Flitcrofts approach - get four or five players in and around the box and just try and out shoot the other team.  We look all over the shop at the back, but glorious going forward.

Could very easily have been something like 10-5 today.

Bradford must be wondering what the fuck they do to players.

I’m sticking with this part of my prediction!

Flynn:
- Fantastic! Could have scored more
- Started sloppy and they should have gone 1-0 up
- Countering and leaving too many gaps
- Got message on and we upped our game
- We then played as a team
- Pleasing to shut the game out
- Shades goal showed that we didnt just sit back
- Young's goals were outstanding
- Good player. Confidence player. Wouldn't have brought him in if he hadn't seen something in him
- Would have taken 1-0 today
- Dan Kemp was outstanding. Brilliant today. Could have scored a hattrick
- Good team performance. Made sure there were no mistakes
- Knew straight away what we did wrong last week
- Made silly mistakes and left ourselves open
- Wanted the start in the second half in the first half. But we started like last week
- Messed up first 3 corner routines as players were switched off
- Don't get too high or low with the performances. Need to put that aside and be professional
- Mildy accidentally punched Flynn on the jaw when we scored 4th
- Uwakwe. Looked much better today. Looked fitter than when he came on against Crewe
- Players need to be fit to play in Flynn's teams
- When asked about whether recent results would encourage people to sign for us. Flynn said that we can only spend what we've got. If we keep everyone fit it will help us have a successful year

What a game that was. Flynn flying in the face of his reputation for hoofball. We really played some lethal stuff at times.

First 10 minutes we were sloppy, particularly Dokes and McEachran but they missed some gold plated chances thankfully.

After that we were great.

We do have a structural/systemic problem in the transition from attacking to defending. The midfield just goes completely missing. One of Khan or McEachran has to sit properly in front of the back 4.

Similarly, Dokes and FBT are probably too inclined to get forward. If they could dial it back 10% we would be more balanced I think.

I thought Brewitt was superb today. Was in a good physical battle with their forward that he won every single time, and he played some nice passes out of the back.

Going forward we were mustard. Charlie never got that chance but did good honest work up there and was in the right positions, it just never fell for him.

We simply have to buy Kemp and Young, or hope for another global pandemic ending the season with us flying high in January.

Lindsey ahead of the game:
- Nah, nah, nah. Its just another game
- I've watched Swindon ahead of the game
- Unbelieveable game against Wrexham. I've analysed it
- Pitch will be good. There will be a good crowd there.
- Reaction has been positive. Players body language and attitude ahas been better than last season
- We held a meeting. We felt we dropped 2 points against Salford and should have got something against Gillingham
- The feeling in the camp is that although we have 7 points we should have 12.
- We have frustration and focus to gain back the points we've dropped
- Could a win against Swindon be a turning point? 'I fink probably so, yeah!'
- Will take each game as it comes. Thats the most important one as its the next one. We are going to concentrate fully on that. We will set the side up to win the game. We'll see what happens. Football is a low scoring game. Sometimes it tips one way and tips the other. We are going to make sure we are in the balance. Hopefully at the end of play we have the 3 points. And we can come away and enjoy our journey 'ome!

And we can come away and enjoy our journey 'ome!

He’s only here because of a fall out with Hughes. He’ll walk straight into their team as soon as Hughes goes

6-0 have some of that 😮‍💨. First half was pure kamikaze football and the defence side of things for us needs serious work. 1 centre half and a centre mid before deadline ideally. Second half pure destruction. Young and Kemp unplayable, top tier recruitment getting them two in. Austin sharp again I thought, UGM and Uwakwe solid performances. All well worked goals. Pure entertainment watching us so far. Team seems fully together which is a huge plus. Didn’t think I’d be saying it this season, but right now we should be top with 4 wins from 4. Didn’t see super Scott Lindsey punching the air and slapping his chest today? Clown. Don’t think they go down but fuck me that defence is woeful 😂, and weasel darcy at the heart of midfield. Onwards and upwards

Funny, watching the extended highlights back and you realise Austin on another day scores about 5.

He was on hand for 4 of the goals but no one chose to square it to him for a tap in, and Kemp could/should have done the same for his first two misses in the first half.

He was in the right place and seems to be a massive part of “the group”.

Great day out. Lots of positives in this side and a style of play we’ve not seen before. Wing backs playing level with the front two, and two of the three centre backs advancing at the same time. It’s this that’s creating so many overloads, and options for the midfield. Crawley had no answer to it. There were too many men to cover.

Changes in personnel won’t suddenly make us more solid defensively if this is the way we play. Add quality by all means, but no centre back, playing on his own (as Brewitt had to do at times yesterday in our 1-5-4 formation), is going to stop the opposition having chances…

Darcy was a passenger for Crawley yesterday, like he was for us in so many games.
You simply can’t carry players of that stature and calibre in the style that Flynn has introduced.

We over ran them second half.

It really is the best we’ve been since Wellens, other than about 7 games in the run in under Garner when he took the handbrake off.

We’ve had 3 seasons of utterly exasperatingly dire football to watch.

Flynn’s Swindon are Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle and I’m loving it.

I just can’t see how a towering CB and a nasty bastard DM would fit in that team without destroying what we’re all enjoying at the moment. Who could you leave out to accommodate a DM? Brewitt is playing so well I can’t see how any replacement would be an upgrade and you can’t drop FBT or Dokes. Sure, get some back ups in but for Gods sake don’t change what’s getting us out of our seats for the first time in a long, long time.

Yep, having slept on it and re-watched the highlights I think I was being a bit harsh on Austin. He is clearly looked at by the younger lads as a leader as he is always heavily involved in the celebrations. His influence definitely adds to the performance even if his individual display shows not much.

I think we can all remember the player he was and that clouds the judgement of what's on display now. Having said that, we all bemoaned a lack of experience and he has that in droves.

Yeah, there is probably an element of ‘he’s Charlie Austin, we need to mark him’ in defenders heads. Leading them to somewhat forget about Jake Young.

With Young banging in the goal he won’t be long before teams start to focus on him and his goals will dry up and Austin will hopefully start putting a load in…

Austin is huge in this team and the way we play in my opinion.

He’s constantly talking to players during the game, his runs and movement draw players out and create space for others. As DV said, defenders are terrified of him and he’s helping Young, Kemp etc because he is who the focus is on.

We don’t win that 6.0 yesterday if we start with Young and RHM for example.

I've also noticed he is very involved in calming things down after fouls, making sure people stay clear of 'afters', chatting to the refs and so on.

A lot of that was the absolute quality of the cross by Uwakwe which was literally pinpoint, better than any cross Hutton has managed so far this season TBH.

BTW that was Crawleys record league defeat yesterday, their only heavier defeat was by Bath City a 7-0 loss back in Southern League Premier days in 2000.

Really exciting performance. Completely different to the inept performances we saw under Lindsey and Morris. We have some very good options up front. Says a lot when RHM and Wakeling are on the bench, waiting for opportunities. Actually think Brewitt did really well yesterday, especially in the first half when he was often left exposed by FBT and UGM. Our style of play will see us concede a fair few, but with the fire power we have up top, you’d back us to out score most teams.

On the flip side, what on earth happened in Crawley’s first three games? That was the sort of performance I expected from them before the season started, but to see they’ve picked up some impressive wins early, is a huge surprise.

Never listened to Phil Smith on commentary before but what a negative bloke! Got kind of annoying when we were 5-0 up and he was still picking the bones out of the first 20 minutes.

Nice to see us playing this way for me - sure it won't always work but goals win games and we appear to have plenty of players able to find the onion bag. Fans will certainly get their moneys worth if the opening few games are an indicator.

I'm here for it. Very refreshing. Can't wait to finally watch us at the CG in a couple of weeks.

It’s already been mentioned, but it’s difficult to overstate how important Austin is, even when he’s not scoring goals. His presence alone means defenders are constantly worried about him and adjusting to what he’s up to, creating so much space for the likes of Young and Kemp. We are very, very fortunate to have him. His piggyback after Young’s (fourth?) goal is an image which pretty much sums him up.

Also thought Shade took his goal really well and should have had two. His reviews weren’t great after Tuesday but he didn’t look disinterested yesterday. Could there be a player there?

Very enjoyable after the opening 20 mins that. No point in stating the same as what many others have said, it’s all relevant. Things that haven’t been touched on so much;

Khans first half was as good as any I’ve seen. As a box to box midfield performance, it was immense.
Kemp and young just seem to be completely telepathic, largely made by Kemps incredibly good “pass and move” play. So simple but so effective. As mentioned, if young wasn’t the one receiving the ball, the ball to Austin would be equally as easy and effective.
That was the closest to “total football” I remember actually seeing. There were moments where we had two centre backs and wing backs in open play baring down on the oppo penalty area whilst midfielders and forwards held some sort of fort further back.
Not getting too excited just yet as Crawley were incredibly soft, bigger, savvy-er teams will obviously be a different proposition as the season progresses.
Can kind of see how Crawley have got some good results early in the season. Credit to SL, that opening 20 minutes was far more enterprising and energetic than anything we saw for Swindon last season. They could maybe should have been 2 or 3 up in the opening 15 minutes. The game would have been a different proposition then, clearly. Thankfully they didn’t have the energy to press that high up the pitch beyond that 25 minutes. Reinforces my belief that the turgidity of last season was as much to do with Sandro as it was SL.

Get the feeling this is going to be a real rollercoaster season, both on the pitch and in the January transfer window. Just got to try and enjoy it for now.

Get the feeling this is going to be a real rollercoaster season, both on the pitch and in the January transfer window. Just got to try and enjoy it for now.

My mate hasn’t seen much of Khan before yesterday and he said what you’ve said about him. He was absolutely immense yesterday, a real quality showing. I think a lot of us held him in high regard last season too, it was just his temperament that was in question. Between himself and Flynn that certainly seems to have been an issue that’s now ironed out. He’s going to be vital this term

My theory on Khan is that he's a high chaos player who is absolutely thriving in a high chaos system. His worst games last season were when he was called upon to play a highly disciplined tactical role pretending to be Louis Reed - that's not him, he wants to be the all action, involved in everything midfielder. There's a bit of Steven Gerrard in him in that way - although his shooting is nothing like as good.

no because he scores more without the need of penalties

I remember him getting a few pens but I don't remember him getting lots of pens, Paynter was a bang average player though IMO who got lucky in 1 season.

Young does have a lot more pace than Paynter ever had and gets in better positions.

Edit: just checked he score 8 pens out of his 51 goals for Town, missing 1 pen, so yes thats a fair percentage of pens.

Paynter was a great striker and was the perfect foil for both Austin & Cox.

Sure 1 of his 3 seasons was a belter compared to other 2 but let’s not pretend he didn’t play a massive part in Cox getting the goals he did.

If you didn’t rate him as anything above bang average you don’t know football & this is a hill I’m willing to die on…

His stats are definitely average for a main striker, a focal point but that wasn’t ever his job for us.

Emile Heskey didn’t have a great scoring record for Liverpool or England but played a lot of games for both to accommodate Michael Owen

skewed by the final year. how many were penalties?

it's a reasonable return 1 in 3, 1 in 4 is about what you'd expect.

he was around in a period of excellence up front though. He was no parkin, cox,  mooney or Austin .

Guess I just didn't see the donkey work/foil that you do

He just needs to stop his hot headedness at times, he occassionally puts his foot on the ball and falls over to lose possession but when hes on his game he is brilliant.

My eldest’s first away game.

Billy Paynter was a lower league average player.
One step too far at Leeds and was signed on the back of an excellent performance scoring 2 in a 3-0 win at Elland Road.
Did well at Swindon and Port Fail.

Just catching up on this, what a performance and glad to see us clicking together.

Only going off of the highlights but the goals looked well worked for the most part and agree with the comments of opposition defences focusing on Austin which leaves space for others to go unmarked. Even Shade managed to get a goal. Hopefully that confidence continues to build through the squad through September as they’ll need it with a tough October coming up.

There’s the obvious discussion about Kemp and Young in January but we always knew this, if they do well then they’ll both be recalled early and both have the luxury of being able to go elsewhere as they’ve only played for us this season. So they’ll either be recalled and reintegrated into their squads (seems unlikely as they were both bombed out) or recalled to derail our own season if we’re doing well and sold on elsewhere unless we stump up the cash. That’s the issue, they’re both not just coming from teams in the same league, but teams that would be direct promotion rivals. Especially if Young continues like this and Hughes gets sacked at Bradford, the new manager will call him back instantly.

So I hope we’re either planning on stumping up the cash when needed or are sourcing replacements ready to come in. Either way, it’s a January discussion point and who knows if the two will continue in the same form.

I am pretty sure both players had fees put on their heads of about £50k up front if we bought them in the Summer, I know Bradford definately wanted a fee for Young and MKD were not allowing Kemp to leave on a free.

I understand we paid a loan fee for both players going by what Flynn said in an interview. He also stated that both were full season long loans and that Bradford and MKD would have to pay us a fee to terminate the loans in January.

So any loan termination fees could actually go towards paying for them if they’re going to be recalled in Jan.

What would the be worth come Jan? Say, Young scores 12-15, Kemp 8-10.

I have been told fees have already been agree with MKD and Bradford prior to them joining if we choose to make them prem deals as we did with Jeff Cott.

My first game watching live.

Well i wasnt expecting that......

Early doors i thought Creepy did us a bit and failed to shoot when they got the chances.

I commented to my mates that the way they played was a lot better than when SL was running the shit show here. 1 zip at halftime was good enough for me and then we handed their arses to them on a plate.

A solid enough start for us, unbeaten in open play.

I always maintain that in L2, if you win at home and draw away, you will get auto promotion.

A bit of a buzz restored in me that i was scared had left me forever.

I think it must be a wind up now but the LSPOD Brewitt targeting continues.

He's the only player they pick out as being at fault for their big early chance.

Not Uwakwe, adding zero value defensively with a pathetic half leg out, not FBT, weak in the tackle and then doesn't get back quickly, not Khan, also weak in the tackle and then ghosted past by their midfielder, not McEachran, who gets absolutely done by a vague shimmy, not Dokes, who charges off like a FIFA player with a glitch, but poor old perennial last man Brewitt, who has seen his team mates part like the Red Sea in front of him and has been left between a rock and a hard place. Their runner with the ball has taken five of our players out of the game... five!

I love the pod and they can say whatever they like (they are doing The Good Lord's work on the ownership front for certain), so making this point out of continued wry amusement rather than anything else, but it does seem that some chosen players will never fall under spotlight (FBT/McEachran for example) whilst Brewitt, who to my eyes and most people's on here was very good on Saturday, seems to have a target on his back.

Dokes, for example, was shocking in the opening stages but not a mention for one of the new golden boys.

I really don't get why some people are still filing Brewitt in the David Duke drawer, especially as many can see that this system leaves him holding the baby most of the time. It will be interesting to see what happens when one of the darlings, FBT for example, has to slot in there.

I guess I'm just interested that people can see games/players so differently but that's football!

I don't listen to the LSPOD at all but Brewitt should not be solely blamed at all, he was excellent again on Saturday, as you state all our defenders made mistakes early on bar probably the ultra reliable FBT.

Although I dont fully agree with your comments about some of the players in the main I get what you are saying 100%.

I often speak to a couple of other TEF'ers post game and we often see the game differently, it is weird how we all look for different things in players. It doesn't mean we are wrong or that we are right its just how we see players.

Often as well you get a different view of a game when you are actually there compared to on iFollow, you see things off camera etc and player runs etc.

FWIW Brewitt for me has been probably our most consistant player so far this season, followed by FBT, Khan and Mahoney.

Thats football and we all love and hate it at times!

I missed the first 25 minutes but have now watched the extended highlights and it looked like we started the game really slowly. That chance that Orsi squandered, would have totally changed the game. Great run by Lolos as well. I've actually read back for once so won't add a lot of what happened on Saturday, scoring 6 without reply (albeit against a Crawley side that folded harder than an Origami class) at home, where entertainment and wins like that had been hard to come by was mightily impressive.

Whilst of course Saturday was tremendous, I do think about future games with caution. (very much what Flynn is NOT doing at the moment) At times we were cavalier verging on Kamikaze. Uwakwe suddenly ended up in a Center Forward position, FBT was constantly marching forwards which got the spidey senses asking - well who is covering for these guys if we lose the ball - the answer was often nobody and a better side, or even one with Dominic Telford in, would have taken advantage. I suspect/hope that Flynn is not going to play that way against say a Mansfield or Stockport who have the players that will punish us in those situations. it is refreshing though to see us going at a weaker opponent. In previous seasons at the CG we have struggled with teams we really should be winning against, and handsomely.

Now August is more or less done, opponents are going to now have an idea of how they can hurt us and Flynn I think is going to have to try and adopt a slightly more conservative approach. Thank goodness all our defenders are comfortable on the ball, they play a huge part in how we play tactically. I love how fluid we are, and in time we'll get more organised and players will be able to cover when Uwakwe goes wandering up front, or a marauding FBT run is halted and he's miles out of position. I'm guessing this is where someone like Kinsella comes into his own, his reading of the play and defensive work is likely to be key.

Oh I almost forgot, another 4 goal haul, like London buses now Harry, Charlie and Young have them in the last 2 seasons.

One other thing I only picked up on watching the highlights.

When they had that chance where Mahoney was way out of his area, I reckon he got fingertips to their attempted shot. Seen by the ref he would have walked. If you look at Mahoney’s reaction he is clearly remonstrating to the ref he was inside his area - he wasn’t.

I'm in 2 minds. Surely if he had got a touch on Campbell's shot, their striker would have been jumping up and down that his 'goalbound' strike had been illegally put around the post by a keeper outside of his box. Instead he sat on the floor knowing he had made a real mess of a golden opportunity.

With that said, Mahoney's reaction definitely suggested he got a fingertip to it. As you say, he was remonstrating about where on the pitch he was rather than suggesting he never touched it. We possibly got away with one there.

Tbh, nobody noticed in real time. Only with the benefit of highlights you can see the ball deviate slightly as it goes past Mahoney’s dive. He knew for sure he touched it - hence the remonstration. Maybe a bit of karma for Wrexham.

One of the Vlogger's got a video of it from behind the goal and it looked like he got a touch to me.

He wouldn't have been making a fuss like he was if he didn't, he would just have been making a fuss saying that he didn't touch it!

Hello again, Mooneyraker.

I actually stated that Brewitt is dragged towards the player because Lolos would have been through otherwise.

For all previous conversations I'll raise my hand and say that I was quite harsh on him (a previous message said it was mostly a bit) but I think this this post is more about your love for Brewitt as our CB than my disdain for him.

None of this will matter once Ryan Edwards or whoever signs this week

FWIW as Ryan Edwards is a free agent, we don't have to conclude any deal for him this week as you can sign them outside the transfer window.

This is indeed true. If he doesn't sign before the deadline then he has until March 22nd (IIRC for restricted transfers ie unnattached players) to sign if he doesnt have a club lined up during the window.

How long is it likely to take for him to be match fit is what you have to ask. Unless he's been training with a club - we've not had any training videos for a while have we?  :sherlock:

Some of that will depend upon his own natural fitness levels, I am sure hes been training in rediness for a move just not having the intensity of game time so far, could be 6 or 7 games before hes near a suitable fitness level I would guess.

Hello again!

I just found it funny that he was the only 'offender' named in relation to that chance when, as broken down, there are many more egregious errors earlier in the phase but the fact they are committed by Dokes/McEachran etc mean they go unmentioned. It was a collective horror show yet Brewitt gets the spotlight.

I think he's a good solid squad player who has really stepped up this year. I don't think he is prime Greer.

I'm more interested in the psychology of why certain players become scapegoats and some move beyond reproach. With Brewitt it seems almost tribal, verging on the culture wars as someone alluded to on here before! Like your manager Germanic, in a roll neck and wearing expensive trainers? If so, Brewitt is a 'limited' semi-neanderthal. More of a traditionalist? Then he's a blood and guts defender of the old school.

I'm genuinely curious to see how anyone does in that role. We are playing 1-5-4 most of the time. I think Van Dijk gets caught out in our system!

I think Brewitt is fine when his sole job is to man mark a centre forward and doesn’t need to think too much about his defending. He benefits a lot from playing in a back three, it makes his job fairly straightforward

I don’t think I’ve seen much from him to suggest he has any real positioning or awareness, and think that a clever side could expose him quite easily. But then I’d also put Blake-Tracey in the same bucket (FBT is better with the ball though). And like I say, playing in a three helps cover up those deficiencies

I'm with Moonraker on this. I really enjoy the LS podcasts and think they are by far the best of the many fan based content providers and of course opinions on players will always vary because they are simply that, opinions. However the criticism of Brewitt (and Khan to some extent) has imo been undeserved, whilst the likes of Johnny Williams always appeared to get an easy ride in comparison, where maybe his Welsh associations (in a man of Kent way) helped! Also the refusal to criticise Huttons defending on a recent podcast did seem somewhat strange.

One thing for sure is that in keeping with other members of the squad Flynn has elevated the performance levels of both Brewitt and Khan, plus in Kemp we have a player that offers 5x what Williams ever did and he doesn't role around on the floor every time he is tackled.

As I said though it's all about opinions.

Can't argue with that and I'm not trying to influence or besmirch.

Easiest solution I can do during my prep is ensure that we are even with discussions on the performances.

For example, I don't think we gave Young enough praise for scoring four goals post-Crawley.

The feedback is appreciated (Mooneyraker included). I don't want to try to please everyone but I think I can try and get us to show our working more. So you might not agree but you can see where we are coming from.

I think it was Terry who said on the LS that we need to stop even discussing Hutton's lack of defending as it's a complete given now that it's a huge weak point in his game. If he was a decent defender also, he'd be in the championship by now. We just have to enjoy this attacking ability. I also lost count of the times Williams was mocked for how much time he spends on the floor when being talked out on the pod.

I get the Brewitt thing but only because it's been discussed countless times how Dan Hunt rates him and the others not so much. So many on here share the opinion that we need a centre back and you can't tell me that it's FBT or UGM that is going to make way with this magical CB most of us crave.

I like Brewitt and he'll be a large part of our squad this year, but with Clayton out till at least end of October, we could do with another body unless Minturn is the plan to step up and FBT comes into the middle which is what Flynn started with in preseason.

Dokes did have a mare the first 15.

Bogus Dave sums up Brewitt quite nicely.

Don’t listen to them consistently but this would have been valid criticism. Was absolutely infuriating

As I've said before, my main feedback is that I massively appreciate and enjoy the Pod. I really think you do a great job and ironically think that being excommunicated (in a sense) by the club has been the best thing for it.

We are very lucky as fans to have such a well put together twice weekly (at least) podcast to enjoy. It provokes thought and opinions and I'm sure that is the point. I take mild umbrage with the Brewitt myopia, that's all!

Started listening to LSPOD recently; really enjoy it. I think it offers an unapologetic set of of opinions (while also justifying said opinions) with some sound analysis and speculation. Football is awash with opinions and you will never please everyone. I don’t agree with everything on LSPOD but enjoy it all the same. May I ask where the name of the pod comes from? Keep up the good work guys!
