Title: Hewlett to Rovers & Playing Budget Slashed
Post by: Dazzza on Friday, April 15, 2005, 20:50:45
First off on the Hewlett front Rovers would be a good move for the man.  Local and to a half decent side that should be up there next season, for all of the slagging we give him I think he'll do fairly well there.

Of more concern is the figure the WDP are quoting that King has to slash of his wage budget.  I wouldn't have thought the whole team are paid 200k a season let alone slash that off the budget!

Going back to a Mark Devlin interview a couple of seasons back he confirmed that there was no one on more than a wage cap of 1k.  Now realistically that’s the case for most of the current players with perhaps a few like Evans, Igoe, Roberts and Parkin on a fair bit more.   That’s approximately four high earners salaries over the season.  Worrying stuff indeed.  No quotes on where those figures come from but it’s not the sort of thing that even the WDP could pull out of thin air so there must be some smoke to the fire as they say.

Matt Hewlett last night admitted he has probably played his last game for Swindon Town after he refused an 'unacceptable' contract offer. The midfielder revealed he was the unnamed player manager Andy King referred to when he announced Steve Book and Steve Robinson would also be leaving.

The Daily Press understands Bristol Rovers may be interested in the 29-year-old.

King has been forced to reduce this year's budget - it is thought by £200,000 - and Hewlett would have had to accept a big drop in pay.

He said: "I spoke to the gaffer about next year but the money that would have been on offer was unacceptable to me. It would have meant taking a big cut."

crieky thats a hell of a drop. next season if we do anything it would be a miracle cause surely we just won;t be able to attract decent players on such small salaries

The drop is annual which is misleading and somewhat sensationalised.  That works out as 4K a week approximately, which is not enormous, but it is significant.  I imagine that the wages of Igoe and Parkin, if they leave, will be used to make up these cut-backs.

Have mixed feelings on Hewlett leaving, but really think we need someone better in that role next season if we're going to progress.

but if everyone's conjecture is right, that works out at 4 players to go doesn't it?

No because its been stated some players are now on more than 1K a week.  I would estimate the likes of Igoe and Parkin are on closer to 2K, so it won't hurt us as much.  If we have to shed 4 players from the first team, we're in big trouble as we'll have a threadbare squad.

Wait and see!
Wait and see what Parkin goes for - I expect everyone here is in for a shock.
Wait and see who does and who doesn't stay

King said that the board would  accept 300K for SSP,  presumably although unstated because there was no choice.

With around a 3rd to Chelsea.....the 200K still represents a net gain of 10K for King on transfer deals over his time here....which is reasonable.

We really could be in trouble next season.

Even if we lose our big earners (I'll assume to be Igoe, Evans & Parkin) We'll be offering league 2 wages to league 1 players (who will tell us to piss off and sign for someone else, probaly brizzle) or offering league 2 wages to league 2 standard players who would accept.

If I over simplify the situation and the wages, and assume all these players leave:

Parkin £2k p/w
Evans £2k
Igoe £2k
Smith £1k
Heywood £1k
Hewlett £1k (5k if you believe that post on thisisstfc -  I fucking dont)
Duke £1k
Howard £1k

and we have to cut the wage bill by £4k p/w, we are left with £7k p/w in wages to replace 8 first team players, which includes some of our best players. King might be good at spotting players, but he's not a miracle worker or financial magician.

At that to the transfer window kicking in and it means we're left with a smaller squad containing less quality than this season.

I think the only way we are not going to struggle next season is for king to find a couple of gems on the Parkin scale and to get a couple of quality youngsters in on season long loans.

Doom and gloom prevails.

It seems so ridiculous that we'd have to give money to Chelsea, that 100k would mean absolutely nothing to them but so much to us.

Yeah you are right! Can't remember who it is either!

Maybe we should do it, can't do any harm can it!  And as you say £100k to us is massive whereas one of those greedy over-paid pre-madonnas get that in a week!

I wouldn't say all is lost quite yet.

The transfer window is going to mean it goes one of two ways.  Clubs will either snap up everything with a pulse giving the players the power once again, or it will leave them chomping at the bit at an offer of a contract and likely to bite hands off.

Let's be honest.
Nobody on this forum has a clue exactly what wages people are on, so it is very difficult to say where we will stand next year.

If you belive games like Championship Manager and the like then players are rich as fcuk! and SSP wouldn't have bought himself a FLAT would he?!

Heywood and Hewlett are both on big wages by our standards.

Heywoods contract was renegotiated after he said he wanted to go back up north in the summer after his 'player of the season' award.

Both are on better money than Parkin.

I don't reckon all of them are. I have no idea what our players are on, bbut last year Blackpool were paying Taylor around £600 a week and he was one of their highest earners.

Graz used to share a flat with Invincibile. They can hardly have been rolling in money!

And if they are then 4k is nothing!

No it isn't. If all I had to do to earn a living was run, go to the gym and kick footballs around I'd be over the moon, but I still don't think they are on as much as we think they are.

Heywood is not on loads, as suggested by Mr White.

It is true that with the exception of Parkin and maybe Igoe, all wages are below £1k basic.  It is appearance, win, goal, final position bonuses which boost up everyones pay.

Dave what is your source?  A mate of a mate told me that Matt Heywood was on $25,000 (U.S.) a week.  FACT.  That's why you can always see Matt in Lunn Poly taking advantage of their extremely consumer friendly exchange rates.
