The latest Quickly Kevin Will He Score? 90s football podcast features one Jan Aage Fjortoft

Just caught up with this - it's actually a really fun interview, Jan is great value and Ivo Graham is on too, clearly having the absolute time of his life.

Emotional that is bloody gut wrenching. The club needs to do some sort of fund raising to help him and this condition. Talking about heroes, a genuine nice guy.

Agreed, he absolutely loved his time at Swindon, a great and humble man with lots of time for Swindon, the town and the club.

Him and his wife owned a shop pretty much next door to my school, Drove, back in the late 70s and he loved chatting to us young fans back then, had all the time in the world for us. I am pretty sure one of his 2 sons, either Ben or Jack, were born in Swindon too.

I'm one of the morons who hates short corners and Luke Williams has me and my ilk on toast here.

That is impressive. I think basically it boils down to football fans generally massively overrating corners as a goalscoring opportunity as Luke says - towering headers from a corner are great to watch, so we think they happen more often than they do. They're really not common and they never have been.

Not many of our managers would explain their style of play in this way, would they? You can see why Williams impressed people.

Aguiar keeps knocking them in for Worthing. As is Ryan East at Rochdale.

I completely understand what he is saying, and do not doubt it.  The thing with stats in football though, is they are tough to read properly.  He is right, corners have a very low success rate - BUT, so do every other type of attacking move.  It's an incredibly low scoring sport, nearly every attack, of any type, from any source, fails.  I actually think, just opinion as I do not have any data, the bit he talks about that is more important is the speed of play bit.  It is not that the corner is short vs long that makes much difference, it's the playing the game at speed that is.  Just like, again opinion, it seems a lot of goals come from defensive errors/giving away possession in risky areas.  The less time you have to react and generate shape, the more likely the other team will create a chance.

That cannot be the same shrinking violet Luke Williams that said three draws = a win at Swindon Town. Sounds like a totally different bloke.

Turns out that working for the Cockney Spiv with Tim Sherwood marking your homework doesn't bring out the best in people. Who'd have thunk it...

Its bizarre isnt it, awful for us, but every player ive spoken to from that era said what an amazing coach he is.

Guess it was just wrong time for us when he was in charge. Doing an exceptional job now.

I guess also it was in effect his first head coach/managers role and you imagine all the shite he had to go through at Swindon was all part of the massive learning process. Fair play to him for what he's achieved since leaving SN1, learning with Russell Martin along the way.
