Title: Carlisle v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Ardiles on Saturday, February 12, 2022, 17:57:26
Struggling to find somewhere to go for a family meal in Carlisle before the game next week.  New ground for us.  Never been before, so suggestions welcome.  Ideally near Brunton Park...as we're planning to park at the ground.  But happy to try pub food further out if we have to.

Thanks, in advance.

The ground isn't far out of the town centre, very walkable. Don't have any personal recommendations but there's Greek, Turkish, Thai and Italian places all well located. Oh and Nando's if that's your kind of thing.

I am sure The Bronx is where I have been drinking the previous two times I have been there.
Sports bar, plenty of room and no more than 10 minutes from Ground. Serve food and no problem with young kids.

Hope to see you next Saturday.
A few Rangers Fans coming down to support us next week with my old Mate Glasgow Red.

Very welcoming and did do food the last time I went there, pie and mash if I remember correctly although that was a few years ago.

Been a big fan of Tebay for years, and we stop there often.  But no good for us on this occasion as we're driving down to Carlisle, not up.

I once got in a car to go to Carlisle away at about 6:45am, still managed to miss most of the first half due to accidents on the motorway, saw about 60 minutes of football, went for a Toby Carvery and come home.

So I don't think Toby Carvery is too far.

Assuming you're not sharing the driving and that you're in/near Swindon - I'd say yes, just.  But you'll need to be sensible about it, take proper breaks etc.  Most would book an overnight stay, I'd imagine.

I've been covering 450 miles in a day quite routinely for a number of years, and it's usually fine but the final hour or so can be quite tough.  Return trip from Swindon to Carlisle is another 100 miles on top of that.

Drove to Newcastle & back from Chippenham for a Wednesday night game, was knackered on the Thursday after and stopped for coffee a couple of times on the way home.

Wouldn’t do it again now I’m an old bastard, it’s bad enough driving back from midweek home games

I remember ex of this parish HerthaB did the trip to Carlisle and back on a Tuesday but not from Swindon but down here near Yeovil, stopping in Swindon on the way up!

370 miles or so each way, he managed it but said he would never ever do it again!

That's roughly about doing East Mids to Land's End each way (not to be confused with the US clothing firm Lands' End  ;) ) or even Yeovil to Carlisle!

One way is plenty enough in UK capacity fuel guzzlers. Obviously to our American friends (and expats) this is merely a trip to the grocery store  :D

It shouldn't be too blowy, and there's no danger of it being frozen off.  Biggest threat, probably, is the heavy rainfall forecast for Friday.

Mrs Bathford and I are in the Lake District for a  few days. Not too bad at the moment, but local weather predicting 4 - 6 inches of snow on Friday.

If it freezes over it may cause problems on the roads and at the ground.

Couple of good results for us last night with Tranmere and Sutton both losing. Unfortunately, Exeter came back from 1-3 with 20 minutes to go but ended up winning 4-3.

Presume most on here are still targeting the POs

Their home average is only 4,200ish this season so thats bang on pretty much give or take a few. Harrogate only took 37 fans there too.

Fucking shite train services.
My first leg of the journey cross country from Banbury to Wolverhampton cancelled due to strike action.
Same as the Barrow fiasco.

Plan B now Banbury to Moor Street
Moor Street to New Street
New Street to Wolverhampton
Wolverhampton to Carlisle

What could possibly go wrong - Nice early start and late back home.
Fingers crossed it’s still on.
Don’t want to have to drive again.

Memorable journey a few years back. A few Swindon in our carriage and see a few of them now from that journey. Everyone was well plastered.
Works party joined at Preston, what a crack we had with them, all ages, they were all pissed up and just one big laugh. The young girls were entertaining to say the least 😂

Mate, I'd be less inclined to trust the trains this time of year.  If I was coming from the same direction, I'd offer you lift.  As it is, I'm sure you'll be there one way or another, as you always find a way.

It starts snowing here in the Lake District from 1.00AM for 7 hours tomorrow morning. Again around 11.00AM for a few hours and finally around late afternoon for a while.

The windchill factor is forecast to take temperatures down to -12.

Even if the coach company is prepared to travel tomorrow to bring the team up, there’s no guarantee that the game will happen.

We’ve had to delay our return home tomorrow because of the forecasted conditions.

Just over the border, not that far from Carlisle, they’re forecasting up to 30cm of snow tomorrow.

Looks like I may have picked the wrong year to tick this one off!

I have booked a couple of nights stay in Ousby and I'll probably still venture up, weather permitting, regardless of whether the game is on as the family are looking forward to a couple of nights away. Does anyone have any suggestions of things to do/see in the NW of Yorkshire Dales or SW of the North Pennines? We like the great outdoors but my Wife is awaiting a knee opp. so won't be able to walk far.

Apologies if this is in the wrong thread (should maybe have gone in the Holidays one). Any suggestions will be greatfully recieved!

Was going to travel today.
Train from Euston cancelled.
Ticket office at Kings X said ok to use the ticket to go via Newcastle & that all the train companies were helping each other out.
Then gave me a reservation for a service that disappeared off the departure board.
Got to the ticket barrier & it was nope we are not taking Avanti tickets.

Scuppered by Dudley & Eunice.
Who the hell thinks up these names.

Hope the game goes ahead or if not the call off is done early.
Will look at the options tomorrow morning.

Now stuck at Paddington.

Should be better tomorrow mate.
Only challenge the damage already caused by the storm. Getting an update from Carlisle later.

Hoping to use Chiltern services from Banbury to get to Wolverhampton.
From Wolverhampton is “your” train service from Euston.

Failing this option to drive to Wolverhampton if Chilterns are cancelled or drive the complete journey if Avanti cancelled.
Then hoping not too far up North if game called off.

Fuck this weather.

Another lad based in Carlisle said would be surprised if called off therefore just a case of getting there tomorrow.
Early check tomorrow as storm damage on Banbury station.
Few options but hoping it’s not another Barrow type drive at the last minute.

Maybe should have called it off at 10.30 as they must have known there was still horrendous weather forecast for a couple of hours after the decision was made.

Hind sight is easy after the event. The rain could have missed or not been so heavy.

Simeu for Carlisle should have been off there. Dived to win a free kick by falling over Davison who was already on the deck. Then takes issue by grappling with Davison. Eventually gets his hand all over davisons face as far as I could tell from the replay on Ifollow. Davison probably did simeu a favour by keeping him held down!

Title: Re: Carlisle v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Berniman on Saturday, February 19, 2022, 15:31:08
They are a little niggly, leaving the foot in and being generally robust on challenges - the ref seems to be letting play continue when it's them and pulling us up for every challenge.  I think this is by design by Carlisle - probably identified that we have a soft underbelly and are too nice with that side of the game

Title: Re: Carlisle v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread

Take that. Definitely the better team and created the better chances. Worrying the amount of balls that have found their way into our box and not dealt with at all. One everyone just watched bounce between the 6 yard line and penalty box. Basic stuff that could be our undoing again.

Title: Re: Carlisle v Swindon pre match chat and matchday thread
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Saturday, February 19, 2022, 15:39:56
1-0HT

Rather disappointing. We were the better team, but haven't killed them off. There is a definite possibility of another Exeter type result!

In that half I would say that Tomlinson Iandolo and Barry have been making lovely little triangles. Barry though has chosen the wrong option or lacked composure

OBrien has been a beast at the back. He looked head and shoulders above anyone else - both literally and metaphorically. He was turned once but was quick to get a challenge in and stop the threat.

Aguiar looks good going forward but a little lightweight in defending.

Reed has been Reed!

Davison has hustled and bustled and given the defenders a tough time.

McKirdy had a superb finish. But, he's been limping around a lot. Think he is struggling a bit

Quite happy so far, ref is a massive homer giving them all the 50/50s.

Patrick for them is a handful.

JOB and Reed my MotM so far, Hunt not doing badly either and Aguiar is having a decent game.

Iandolo looked lost for most of the first 30 mins then grew into the game as the half drew to an end.

McKirdy loved winding up the angry Northern natives who look like a cage of moody monkeys when hes on the ball, he loves that!

Barry so close to being a good player!

Overall pretty happy with that but need to score another to quieten them

Iandolo replaced by East.

I would have thought it was a good opportunity for Parsons.

Harry Styles, Joy Division & Barry White. What a beautiful tune being played by Town!

Again, a pretty poor side in Carlisle but a win is a win is a win. Scoring goals hadn't been Town's problem (that's 50 now I think), conceding them had. The defence appears shored up after a change and a tactical one also.

If Garniola can show that he can not only adapted his teams on the training ground but also in-play then playing in the league above would not be a problem for Town.

Elsewhere as it stands:

FVR losing
Sutton drawing
Newport/Mansfield drawing
Tranmere winning (boo)
Northampton were winning 0-2 at Colchester - game postponed (the soapiest of titwanks)

A clean sheet for Town would be the Prunus Avium atop the icing!

Massive props to all who travelled today - it seems there is another eye in the storm and things have settled at present. Expect it to whip up again tomorrow and then it'll all become chip paper by Tues.

Huge effort though (away fans all across the country) to commit and especially one such journey as long as Swindon - Carlisle. Would be a decent bit of PR for the club to drop you all a free ticket to the next match (bring a pal) for making that journey in very unsettled conditions.

All of you make it back safe, regardless of direction. Still 15mins to play but "Come on you mighty bastarding reds"

I think a lot of pennies have dropped in the last few weeks.

All the things people were concerned about a few weeks ago have been address by Garner to be fair.

Difficult one to choose a MotM.

McKirdy scores 1 and sets up 2.
OBrien covered everyone at the back.
Davison with a cool finish and his best performance in a Town shirt.
Aguiar was bright in midfield.
Reed glued everything together.

I don't think you can deny McKirdy after 1 goal and 2 assists.  Reed, O'Brien a close second and an honourable mention for Aguiar for me.

FVR lost
Tranmere ended up drawing.

Great gains for both Northampton (who did win  ) and STFC.

it's become incredibly tight again. With Town on 49pts in 7th yet Tranmere sit in 2nd with 56pts. However - Tranmere must be sweating like the Pedo Prince as Town and several others in the POs have two GiH on them.

Are Nailsworth FC starting to buckle?
Have Town hit momentum at just the right time?

Who knows but let's enjoy the last two months of the season and seeing Town really give it a go - even if they fail spectacularly. Going by today they gave it a decent go.

Back to back 3-0, back to back wins - back to back clean sheets. Call Housekeeping and tell them we don't need them!  ;)

We’ve just beaten 2 of the worst sides in L2. I’ll wait until we’ve played a few sides better than them 2 to decide on Garner.

Tbh, it’s not just based on what happens this season, it’s that I’m struggling to see him having an impact in L1 - if we get there.

100% agree, McKirdy MotM for scoring 1 and setting up 1, but the way he dealt with the verbal ubuse all game and relished in it shows hes grown up a lot this season.

Almost faultless performance by the whole team i thought.

Men against boys and tbh we played them off the pitch at times, they had no answer to us.

381 was a great turn out again by Town fans too.

Credit to Garner who addressed the concerns of a couple of weeks ago and i think its no coincidence that we changed to 4 at the back and in both games won 3-0.

I enjoyed that today.

Garner:
- Last two games back to back 3-0
- Better side at half time. Should have been 2-0
- Second half could have had more. Was willing one in for Parsons
- Timing, movement and decisions were good
- Have worked on that in training
- Fantastic ball from McKirdy for third and great position taken up by Barry
- Back to back clean sheets pleasing
- Couple of things to look at at the back. Especially towards the end
- Its not down to formations its down to players performing
- McKirdy maturing as a player and a person. Lovely part of the job when you see players do that
- His ability is impacting games and long may it continue
- Tried to help him get his head in the right place and handle emotions. Let ability and effort do his talking
- McKirdy rolled his ankle in the first half. So protected him for Tuesday
- Really pleased with Aguiar's performance. Really growing and grew in this game. Has nice technique. Decision making and physique has improved this year.
- Davison: Didn't see, but there were a lot of decisions let go and things boiled over then
- Referee made great decision to let things go when we scored, but there were things that were let go (fouls) in the first half that needed stopping
- New manager always gives team a lift. Flynn has a good squad at Walsall. Know them well.
- O'Brien: Really important contribution. Very steady and mature character. Has been improving on the ball. Really pleased at his development.

Barry:
- Really satisfied with the second 3-0
- Dug deep at the end
- Talked about getting the second at halft time. When we did, we eased into the game
- Short, sharp passes: We have worked in training on knowing where everyone is.
- First league goal: Really happy with it. Gives confidence. Hope he can solidify his place in the team
- McKirdy loves the camaraderie and a great team mate
- Frustrating at Ipswich. Didn't play much. Close knit group here. Really good group to come in to.
- The way we play, he is able to express himself. Need to work on getting the simple things right.
- Barcelona experience: Lots of technical and psychological stuff on the pitch. Lots of 1 on 1s talking with Kluivert. Learned a new language.
- Only 18 but has had a lot of experiences.
- Wants to kick on for promotion.

Why the fuck did Hodgetts find it funny that "Joe" had sellotaped 26p to a piece of paper and continued to snigger when mentioning because it his "mum can't afford to pay..."

In terms of impartial public service broadcasting - that's shocking. Show some professionalism regardless of private opinion/thoughts. Must be ok to be a well paid and long term anchor for a regional radio service - who doesn't have the same sort of financial worries. Maybe a "w" should be placed in front of that word anchor.

He really is a bit of a twat - several subtle and backhanded wording from him.

Been thinking about Garners ‘change’ of tactics that has been the subject of many comments particularly in the match day threads.

There seems to be a collective cohesion recently that he has either listened to the forum, listened to other influences, realised things were to predictable and lacking or maybe, just maybe now he has the personnel that he had time to scout to address the short comings he couldn’t do because of the team he had that were hastily put together in the three weeks before the season kicked off and who he couldn’t add too (financial constraints etc) before the close of the summer window? Is it just a coincidence or has it been a carefully managed tweak that he intended to do in January if the opportunity arrived?

It’s definitely because he read my posts on the TEF.

I doubt he's taken advice off the TEF LL. Planned, enforced by injury, not sure

we've certainly stopped playing short from goal kicks as much, and get it forward quicker.

Will be interesting to see if we can continue to do so against better teams. But that's not to take away from the last couple of games

Garner has ears. he can hear the crowd showing their displeasure at goal kicks, passing back etc I guess there is only so much until he has to react. I missed the last home game and so I'm really hoping it has changed as I'm going again on Tuesday.

couldn't watch or listen today. love the recent and look forward to the highlights. coyr

Reed all day long.
Just superb.

Another really good result. Get anything out of Tuesday - against a form side - and we may have turned a bit of a corner. Really glad to see Davison score again. And as for McKirdy, I can’t remember having as creative a goalscorer for some time. We’ve had goalscorers, and creators, not both rolled into one for some time…

Mentioned it earlier Aud  :) Hope you're feeling a bit better by the way.

Again, a pretty poor side in Carlisle but a win is a win is a win. Scoring goals hadn't been Town's problem (that's 50 now I think), conceding them had. The defence appears shored up after a change and a tactical one also....

If Garniola can show that he can not only adapted his teams on the training ground but also in-play then playing in the league above would not be a problem for Town

A clean sheet for Town would be the Prunus Avium atop the icing!

Massive props to all who travelled today - it seems there is another eye in the storm and things have settled at present. Expect it to whip up again tomorrow and then it'll all become chip paper by Tues.

Your following of the town is legendary and having made the trip there when Cooper was manager I can only stand back and admire your dedication, especially with the bad weather of the last few days making an already difficult journey something akin to a Phileas Fogg/Dr. Livingston epic expedition.

On the face of it the expectation is we keep moving forward in terms of personnel, training, tactics, fitness, player understanding and so on. That is this season sorted. We get promoted then I have absolutely no doubt about next season in L1 in terms of not only survival but actually making a significant challenge for back to back promotions.

The 2 pitch invaders went past more people on the pitch than him.
Couldn’t help laugh at the unfit stewards, all were struggling to run.
First pitch invader went up on his arse right into the shins of the first. Was the closest they got to JoJo all game.

Given the 'pressure' Garner was getting, Scunthorpe and Carlisle were the ideal opponents to get back on track. On paper a tricky game, lousy weather, northern outpost etc. It didn't seem to work out like that, the sun was shining at kick off, the pitch looked decent enough!

I have to admit I was a little concerned early on as their left winger Omari Patrick looked tricky and got in behind Hunt a bit too easy a couple of times. Luckily he had no end product and any danger fizzled out. We were playing nicely and of course it was McKirdy who opened the scoring, nipping the ball away from the flat footed Simeu to rocket into the roof of the net. Cue the celebration in front of the Carlisle fans and a half eaten burger thrown wildly in his direction, he really had put the Carlisle fans in a pickle. Second half was all us. I thought Davison might have been offside when McKirdy played it to him (Haven't checked so could be wrong) but it was an excellent finish from him, you can see his confidence growing. 2 minutes later, the game was put to bed, more great work from Mckirdy, swing and a miss from Davison, rattled in by Louie Barry. After that we took our foot off the gas and eased to another 3-0 win against very poor opposition.

It's difficult to say whether going with the 4 at the back has changed things given the standard of opponent. Tomorrow night's game will be a better yardstick, Walsall under Flynn will be organised and came away from Forest Green with 3 points so will be much tougher opponents. I did think we played very well on Saturday, Reed was a cut above and the front 3 looked lively and are starting to form useful partnerships. Cautiously optimistic about the rest of the season but the next 2 home games will be crucial to see just how far this team will go.

Apparently Walsall employed a high press against FGR and tightly man marked Cadden out of his runs down the flanks.

Can expect more of the same tomorrow.

As for Davison's apparent swing and a miss, it looked like he was given a little nudge by the defender which caused him to miss. Karma prevailed anyway :)

He wasn't. It was awful defending though - one of their defenders obviously didn't know the signal to move up because he stayed put, playing Davison on by a mile.

Yeah I watched the highlights back and their number 17, as you say, was much deeper and then had the temerity to put his hand up appealing for offside - terrible line.
