Title: Luggy's return
Post by: Weasel on Monday, August 4, 2008, 06:08:23
Obviously he'll get a good reception - always seemed a nice bloke, plus the recent revelations about his illness etc - but i hope we don't sing his name. He still buggered off and left us afterall.

'We are Malpas red and white army'..... anyone?!

Post by: mexico red on Monday, August 4, 2008, 06:14:06
if i was going he wouldnt get a good reception from me, solely for not keeping his fat gob shut concerning diamandis and co. He really didnt need to say anything and i tend to think if he had kept stum they may have gone that little bit sooner.

He won't get a good reception from me either.

He dumped us at the 1st opportunity. Just like Wise, only his escape route  came a little later in his tenure. He's just the same as everyone else, look after #1. Fine, but don't shout off about loyalty and lock ins.

At least he took us up I suppose.

He's gone. He wasn't around long enough to be a leg-end.

He'll get the same reception from me as all managers of visiting clubs get (Unless they're Martin Allen) which is fuck all.................

Couldn't give a fuck about him personally, certainly won't get any sort of nice reception, because as far as i'm concerned he doesn't deserve one. I can't say i particularly liked the bloke anyway.

Sturrock didn't dump us at the first opportunity. He could have gone to Leicester. He still left but to his 2nd favourite club (other being Dundee ofcourse) If someone offered Colin Calderwood the Swindon job I'd expect he would do the same.

He could have gone to Leicester.

Was he definitely offered that job then?

Calderwood would be the biggest idiot ever to leave Forest fr us,

Really rated Sturrock, thought he was a much better option than Wise.
He didn't show loyalty when the chips were down and as Mex says 'he should have kept out of the politics and kept his mouth shut, lost a lot of support with his backing of the old board', when he left we went into freefall for a while which I blame him for the unrest he caused - saying that I wish him good luck in the future, but I wont applaud him, he's not Swindon anymore simple as that.

I cant afford to go. I would neither boo or clap sturrock if I was there. I dont blame him for leaving the crap he had to deal with, Perhaps some was brought on by himself but hey ho...

Title: Re: Luggy's return
Post by: wiggy on Monday, August 4, 2008, 08:22:20
Sturrock got us promoted out of the hell that is League 2, and for that I am grateful. That he managed to bring some players to us against the backdrop of the board/finances etc is testimony to his personal reputation. He should be greeted well for doing this club a great service.

However, I am pleased we have a manager now who is trying to get us to play decent football. Whether it will work this far down the leagues (as opposed to Luggy's more direct approach) will become apparent very soon.

Sturrock was never offered the Leicester job - FACT

As for Calderwood, having spoken to Colin about this very subject yes he would love to manage here "one day" but he would not leave Forest to take a step down a level

And Sturrock....he done well in getting us promoted when it could have gone pear shaped I will aknowledge the bloke but would start jumping up and down and shouting his name, I would merely be polite.

Look I know he left the club, but are people forgetting the situation that we were in at that time? we all need to work to pay the mortgage and bills. I'm sure Luggy's in the same boat. If your company were weeks from a winding up order and you were offered another, better job on more money what would you do?

I'm with Yeovil on his sticking his nose into club politics, but I don't know what sort of pressure to make some sort of statement might have been brought to bear on him by the club.

Title: Re: Luggy's return
Post by: Spencer_White on Monday, August 4, 2008, 13:18:39
Il be clapping him. He got us over the line and we did turn out OK in the end.

His autobiography would be a good read for Town fans should he ever choose to do one.

Just agree with the sentiments against Aljofree as well. End of the day we were very close to having a club robbed of us, and an overpaid, overrated, big mouth centre half's opinion isnt going to change Paul Sturrocks legacy at the club. You can ask Aljofree, but dont tell us what to think. Paul Sturrocks time here was a mixed bag.

Personaly I have no hard feelings towards Sturrock. He's a decent manager who came here and did a job. Not a STFC legend by any stretch of the imagination but he doesn't deserve any stick

ARGYLE will field a young and inexperienced side for the final friendly of the pre-season campaign at Swindon Town.

Head of Youth coaching Mike Pejic will marshal the troops at the County Ground, where former Pilgrims Lilian Nalis and Hasney Aljofree ply their trade.

Manager Paul Sturrock has decided against fielding an experienced team for the meeting with his former club, preferring to focus on training ground work ahead of Saturday's Championship opener against Wolves.

Pejic said: "I was originally under the impression we would be taking some first-team players who hardly appeared on Saturday but that has changed, and the manager is now doing a full week of training.

"It will be a good experience for the kids, irrespective of the score. We have got some first-year apprentices as well as first-year professionals.

"I want them to give a good account of themselves. I have worked on certain things that I will need to see in the match.

"Damien McCrory has worked hard and a lot of them were very fit last season.

"I am going to try Dan Smith in a different role just behind the front man. I am also looking forward to seeing Bolasie in action.

"We are particularly inexperienced at the back with the young kid Jordan Trott. Ryan Brett will fill in at centre-back because Ben Gerring is injured."

Apparently he wont be there tonight by the looks of things .. its our first team versus their youths .. bit of an insult to be honest!

actually thinking about it .. looks like we might have a weaker side out too if Corr and other trying to gain fitness are playing ..

It is a home game for us so it will be a first team workout, but obviously it makes sense as it is a freindly to give Corr, Aljofree, Peacock etc a run out to help them with fitness

Post death his limbs will be severed and sent to the four corners of the Football league as a warning to all football website editors across the land, to not mix up to local rivals, or else.

Boooooooring game, and cold too.

Plymouth's #7 looked a good player on the right for them. Super fast, strong, direct... I am guessing from the list above it was Yala Bolasie. He would be a better option than, say, Mark Marshall, but I can't imagine Plymouth would want to let him go.

Yala Bolasie isn't a youth - he was brought in from Malta this summer.

Easily their stand-out player, gave Aljofree all kinds of problems.

Faster than Ifil as well, which you don't see very often.

Also, you could say tonight proved how much work Pook has to do to win Malpas over. Wasn't in either of the 2 starting line-ups this evening, behind Chris Allen in the pecking order.

No they were there tonight, quote from Plymouth site's match report:

"If the locals were disappointed with Argyle's under-strength team selection, it was nothing compared to a couple of interested spectators - Luton boss Mick Harford and Reading manager Steve Coppell".

Harford is an interesting one - Hopefully Coppell (if it wasn't a botched opposition scout - which is quite obviously was) was watching someone like Dan Smith of Plymouth who has played in their first team.

Think Betsy was in the Arkells heard a few different people talking and apparently he wants to sign for us but he has a year left on his contract at City, so they're trying to sort it out so he's signed before Saturday.

All in all, Nalis didn't impress me tonight, seemed off the boil but understand he needs to improve match fitness and be a bit sharper etc.

All in all pre season wise I have to say I am suprised by Jack Smith.  After pretty much being told he could look elsewhere for a club, he has come back, clearly worked hard and has been performing as well as Ive seen him previously.  I know its only pre season but still.

Nallis still looks a bit poo to me. Joyce was good although a little over-eager. jerel was quality, dealt with everything. Macnamee was entertaining but I think he either needs to get more ball or drop inside to collect it as he was under-used tonight. Will Evans looked solid after a slightly shaky start.

MOM was Paynter in the second half, so many good headers I lost count, Joyce played well off them. Kennedy looked good on the left when he got his confidence up although I worry about his strength on the ball. Smith in goal was good, I'd honestly start with him over Brez.

JP had a reasonable half, better than most of last season.

My ideal starting line up on Saturday would be:

Smith,
Ifil, Kanyuke, Smith, Aljofree / vincent / kennedy (cop out i know)
Timlin, Easton, Macnamee, JPM
Paynter, Cox

Not quite the reaction from a lot of people at the game - spoke to a good few people (including a couple of muff fans) who were under the impression they'd be watching a first team side, under Sturrock and were pretty hacked off he'd seemingly pulled both himself and his first choice side out at the last minute. "Disrespectful" was a word that kept coming up, and this most strongly from those who'd been quite keen on the man himself until tonight.

EDIT: Should have added, thought "disappointing" would have been more the mark, but then perhaps I expect less from pre-season friendlies. Even if you do get a nominal "first-choice" side, they usually play well within themselves anyway, and I wasn't that fussed about seeing a tiny Sturrock-like figure waving briefly from the dugout but maybe that's just me.

Quote of the night goes to Joe, just turned 6 and attending only his second evening game - 10 minutes from the end, he's clearly flagging and tired. "Are you all right Joe?" "No, Daddy I'm completely fed up", "Do you want to go now then?" (in outraged tone) "No, Daddy, I'm staying till the end". Already knows what it is to be a Town fan - totally fed up, but determined to stick it out. I was so proud.

Didn't go myself, would have done but not really any point knowing they were going to put out a youth team. Not a very professional thing to do and considering Sturrock used to be out manager you'd think he'd give the fans who used to sing his name a bit of a show.Even the fact there were obviously other managers there to watch his side its no excuse.Would have been annoyed if i was a Plymouth fan who'd made the journey let alone a Town fan!

Saw Points west and they had a preview of our season, always reasuring to see Fitton talking so much sense. Also Axs got on to it as well, celebrating like a loon in the opening montage, what a star  :D

I couldn't give a toss about Sturrock not being there last night, to me it's an example of the regard he holds Swindon Town and its fans in.

Shame about the tean muff sent though, although it was still entertaining imo.

Aljofree at left back was a bit good. Eliminated the risk when he bombs forward, and looked very good. Would also allow us to play Ifil and Kanyuke in the center together. Callum Kennedy and Ben Joyce were outstanding, Kennedy was steady at left back, but when he moved to the wing at half time he came alive. Chris Allen was pretty good as well. Quite excited about this year, although i usually am at the start of the season, I'm sure it'll wear off in a few games.

I think you've just taken axs' slightly blinkered view and contrasted it with your own. You both have valid points though. Paynter had a good game on the whole but really should have had atleast one more goal.

McNamee was pretty good but I was a bit pissed off that he got a huge round of applause for doing a few stepovers then playing a shite cross over everybody's head. Joyce looked good - he was always getting into good positions and I'd like to see him get some more first team game-time soon.
Can't really comment on the keepers as neither was tested much. Oh, and what was going on with JPM? He actually looked interested! A decent performance from him, perhaps a result of the talk about Kevin Betsy - hopefully he'll continue that in the league.

See I don't agree with this point of view.  Up watching Hibs on Sat made me realise how good it is to see players trying things.  Shiels was running his heart out playing some lovely balls throught the boro defence.

I see McNamee's step overs as the same, he's trying to beat the man, okay so his final ball may have been shocking, but me applauding his attempt shows encouragement, and hopefully him hearing the crowd not get on his back for a shite final ball, but applaud his previous work will make him attempt it again, next time his final ball maybe a killer.

That's what support is, try focussing on the positives for a change.

You're exactly right there JA, one of the reasons why English football lags behind say Spain, is that skill with the ball is driven out of players from a young age, not only by coaches but by crowds, who want to see a bit of blood and guts stuff.

Players like McManatee, can only perform if encouraged....it probably will only take a couple of home defeats before some are on his case.

Title: Re: Luggy's return
Post by: janaage on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, 15:01:07
It one of those aspects of town fans that frustrate me.  Sometimes I'll give a player a "well done" as it were even if their pass goes straight to the opposition centre half, because you could see what our player was trying to do.  Obviously if said player then does exactly same thing time after time then you can say come on fella, that ain't gonna work.

But (and I don't want to go on about this) at Hibs the fans do have a different get behind the lads spirit, the fans don't just turn up and sit back waiting to be entertained they involve themselves in getting behind the team.  Wish the CG regulars were a bit more like that!

I agree. Our players are not going to make that killer pass each time, get a shot on target each time, get the cross in perfectly. If they did they wouldn't be playing for us. You can appreciate the vision of the players and the effort they put in without the need to slate them everytime they cock it up. At times I do wonder what some of our fans expect when they turn up for a game, you aint gonna get premiership quality. I just want effort and hard work.

I want more than just effort and hard work - Pook gives us that. I want to see a willingness to try to play football properly, and judging by the Cardiff friendly Malpas could get the team doing that. Whether we are succesful or not, I don't think it will be boring this season.

In terms of fans getting behind the team, I think its got worse since Fitton took over. We just got used to being terminally bankrupt and usually terminally shit. Shocked me how lazy the crowd were for the Cheltenham game. Yes, the team had thrown away any sort of play off chance. But it really was eery. The fact that weve always lived close to the edge financially has provided a lot of motivation for supporters in the past.

I dont think anyone need worry about the crowd not encouraging McNamee, I think everyone has been won over. There are two players who are going to get it in the neck if they dont perform this season. One is JPM, who if he gets stick, I wouldnt be too bothered at all. But I think if the crowd get on Paynter's back then it might really hurt him and kill off his career here. He works really hard for us, and he needs to have the confidence to shoot whenever he see's an opportunity.

Calm down Jan - I make one slightly less than pessimistic point and all of a sudden I don't know how to support my team? Fair enough the lad was trying things, and yes the stepovers were good. I wasn't suggesting we should slate him for his bad cross. My point was more to do with the fact that had he not done the stepovers but whipped in a delightful ball that was headed wide he would have got no credit. And I agree with you about the through ball straight to a centre back, they can often be verging on brilliance. I just think people are impressed by the wrong things sometimes that's all.
