Title: The Morning After
Post by: eddiet on Sunday, November 9, 2008, 10:33:49
Woke up with a fucking hangover and I am still angry and embarassed about that shite yesterday. That has got to be the lowest point i have ever seen in 25 fucking years ( and I include Stevenage and Dagenham for those with long memories )

Malpas - do the decent thing and fall on the sword ( i know it wont happen so somebody fucking sort this out ).

Players - if you cant be fucking arsed to work and battle for your shirt and for 7-800 fans who have spent good money pitching up in a village 150 miles away , then fuck off to another club and let us bring in somebody who will. Will you wake up fucking angry and embarassed - I fucking doubt it.

Basically - if we go out of the JPT ( the JPT for fuck sake ) then our season is screwed by November , cos there aint much evidence that we have the ability to go on the kind of run we will need to get up to the play offs.

This shit has gone on too long this season , we have massively under performed ( Colchester , Huddersfield etc ) and this has got to be the last straw.

The newbies in the 5500 will be flocking back ...............

Dave, did you go yesterday? It was abysmal and quite possibly the worst Town performance I have ever seen.

I didn't, no. But on the face of it a top of the table division one team losing at home to a mid-table conference side is worse than a lower mid table league one side losing away to a top of the table conference side.

I take your point about rankings, but I think what angered most of us yesterday was the performance.

It was the most embarrased I've ever been after a football game.

Everyone of the players yesterday, with the exception of Timlin, should be fucking ashamed of themselves.

And the manager, did he perform on the touchline or did he go back into his shell, did he show anger or passion - or was it the Malpas of four matches ago?

I dont think they have dugouts at little village pitches.

I'm sure they do, there is a standard at all levels of non-league football and one of those standards is to have a dug-outs.
Even village sides in the lower reaches of non-league have to apply.

I didn't see Malpas, but then again I wasn't looking for him. What I was looking for was the players. Unfortunately they went missing.

Very poor display, I know it happens in Cup games, but that doesn't make it any easier to swallow. I'm not going to start shouting for the managers head on the back of this result though, the last four league games have shown we can compete in the division and if we get a result against Leicester It'll be a bit more evidence of this.

The fans who went yesterday (on ThisIs) are giving Malpas even more stick than normal - his lack of inspiration to the players, his use of substitutes etc.
Never thought that a JPT Trophy match would be so important to our season, without getting onto a long thread of Malpas Out again, surely a defeat on Wednesday and another against Leicester must see the end of his reign.

I wish Malpas would come for a drink with me down my local, I left early last night, not for ages have I taken so much stick or pisstaking about my side, nearly got a bit punchy, very out of character for me.

Malpas please leave you might not be the problem, but whilst you are here I have lost all hope of Swindon recovering.

I've tried not to think about the result, but I too am still very fucking angry. The players just looked like they thought Histon would roll over and give us the win.

I agree with eddie, should we lose on wednesday then our season will be over in November - unless we get a relegation battle on our hands.

One loss in 4 games. I am going to slit my wrists. It was shit, it was embarrassing, only 4 or 5 little kiddies started chanting for Malpas' head after the game and they were all told to fuck off and grow up. A result against Leicester and that's one loss in 5 games which is not a bad return. Shit result y-day but we can't do anything about it now. We need to look forward.

Cox was just as poor as anyone yesterday. I think the problem is the media, fans, players and even the manager have focussed so much on Cox in the last week, we've forgotten a game is played with 10 other players on your side.

Yes but the latest results in the league and 2 against decent opposition Oldham (which i missed) and Scunthorpe (who are top of the pile) shows that in the league we stood our ground. Yesterday was appalling, Absolute bollocks however this is down to complacency no doubt thinking "they are only non league we will beat them",  Histon had nothing to lose and came at us. They played shit football, we sunk to that level and they outplayed us due to it, They are used to playing that level and battered us. I am not concerned about the result. I would be more concerned if it was a home league loss to Hereford say.  Malpas couldn't do much. He lost one of his substitutions when Smith got injured, He brought on Corr presumably as a target man as the ball spent most of the game in the air and brought on Marshall who played at a similar level last season. He couldn't make 11 substitutions sadly. I would say Malpas got it right. He played our first team, Sadly the players didn't want to play. You can shout and scream from the touchline all you want but if the players don't give a shit then.... what can you do?

Title: Re: The Morning After

So if the players are not responding to the manager what do you do/
Change the whole squad, now that is a impossibility.
Making changes to the playing line up, including regularly swopping your keepers around, playing every combination of the four centre backs, play left footers in right sided positions and vice versa - he has tried many variations.
There is one variation we have not tried yet, it must be worth a go - Taxi for Malpas!!!

Anyone who is pleased we lost is not a true fan at least in my mind anyway. Malpas won't be going anywhere in my mind. The players were to blame for yesterday's loss end of. Every one of them looked shit however the manager chooses the team etc so he is not free from any blame but his substitutions were spot on IMO.

If you can't motivate ....

So Ian Holloway comes in loses 5 on the trot then, we sack him too until we find an immediate winner??? To me again, Yesterday was shit, but if we respond and continue to climb up the league then we have shown we can bounce back, something we were not able to do a month ago. Maybe it's just me being positive but now we are focusing on the league and if we don't get this out of our system we will get dicked by Leicester next weekend. The players have a lot to prove now.

We need to make a change Gazza.
You talk about only one defeat in four early in this thread - if you had gone to the Oldham and Northampton games you would have known it could have been so easily more defeats, lady luck was with us then, against Scunthorpe, Smith had a blinder and kept us in the game, thats what he is paid to do of course.
My problem and many like me is simple, I believe we have players who are capable of performing well at this level, but I believe 100% that the manager is out of his depth.

Northampton we could have lost, we deserved to beat oldham

Title: Re: The Morning After
Post by: Nick Bamosomi on Sunday, November 9, 2008, 12:43:34
This is my take on it, FWIW..

We played well against Scunthorpe last week, and we COULD have won it with a bit of luck, but it was a good result, an entertaining game, and it helped build the confidence of the team up after a real battering over the last couple of months. Coxy scored a hat -trick, and the players (and manager) look to their next match - cup tie against non-league opposition. Now on the OS there was lip- service paid to the "never underestimate a non-league team" by Malpas, but that is all it was - lip service. In the players' minds, having held the League 1 leaders to a draw and with Simon Cox scoring a hat trick and more goals in the last couple of matches, they don't really think there will be anything other than an easy win, and therein lies the problem. They thought they were on the up (as did we a little bit I suspect), and that we had nothing to worry about cos Coxy would knock them in. Whatever Malpas said to them went over their heads somewhat, and yesterday was the result.
Not enough effort, desire, passion or committment, because they went into the match thinking they had it in the bag.
There was little or no proper football played (Histon don't play it and wouldn't let us play it either) and the whole thing ended up being an embarrassment. Clearly Histon had nothing to lose, and  wanted it more (unsurprising really).

I blame the players, not Malpas for this, and I am NOT a fan of his i hasten to add.

Gazza can you explain how you think the subs were correct? A right sided player going on the left ? If we needed ariel targets why not play corr, paynter, and cox up top. If u want crosses going in is it wise to effectivly have no natural wingers?

If Malpas deserves the sack for yesterday's shower of shite, then we should also have sacked Wise and Strurrock immediately after the Morecambe and FGR games in the past two years' first round games. Because they were equally gutless displays from players who think they're far too good to need to exert any effort against non-League opposition because their obvious "class" will carry them through. Like Nick said, yesterday was down to the players and I hope they're ashamed of themselves as we are of them.

Title: Re: The Morning After

I dont know what to say and I obviously wasnt at the game watched the highlights which lasted all of 30 seconds, so I could be totally wrong

...but...it sounds like they dragged us down to their level and beat us with expirence.

As for the manager, I hate threads like this - not to say there arent some valid points but fuck me we seem much more keen to make a fuss and air our views when we lose but when we win every one seems to go quiet or heap praise on the players and players only.

Going out the FA Cup to a club lower than us, isnt uncommon now is it. Histon, Boston, Notts County, Barnet, Stevenage - its nothing new

Lets wait for the response and see what the next two games bring

Gah, you're right, although for the FGR game Byrne/Williams had only just taken over - it was still Sturrock's team, with Sturrock's coaching etc. So we should have sacked Strurrock after the Morecambe game and issued a statement saying "Bah, we're glad you're gone, your side just played rubbish against non-League opponents in the cup, you useless git" after the FGR game :)

The point still stands, the players have a history of going all Billy Big Bollocks when faced with non-league opposition, irrespective of who's in charge.

Title: Re: The Morning After
Post by: sharper on Sunday, November 9, 2008, 13:45:20
Yesterday was disgraceful and embarrassing.....there is no denying that from anyone at Histon yesterday.

I can understand a league side going to a conference side and being 'pulled down' to there level.  In fact this would be offensive to Histon.  They scrapped, battled, shut down, won every second ball, every header, played channel balls effectively etc...I could go on.  We did none of these things.  We were 3rd best.  Even the ref outperformed us.

You could see in the players they didn't fancy a battle.  Fifty fifties were lost continually and the Histon goal summed up the performance.  One of there players wanted the second ball far more than a Swindon defender.

The subs were all wrong.  As soon as we went 1-0 down it was evident we were not going to get back in the game with the same system.  Paytner should have remained on and Malpas should have had the balls to go 3-4-3 far earlier than the last 8 minutes.  Bringing Marshall on was loony.  Macca was completely ineffective in a very physical and direct game......so why bring on the nearest thing to Macca and thats young Marshall!  Malpas would have had better judgement to chuck on young Morrision up front, or if he wanted to keep 4 in midfield bring on Easton, who would at least get stuck in.  Quality alone was not going to win the game yesterday.  If we had matched the effort of Histon we would have got a replay at the very least.

I have followed Swindon since I was 5, travelling the country to see them play and honestly that would be in my top 5 worst ever experiences of following my team.  Worse than Nottm Forest 7-1, worse than Stevenage -we tried that day.

I could have taken defeat yesterday.  Im often pessemistic and could see this game as an upset.  Saying that I still expect the players to give 150% for the cause as the many town fans did to travel to Cambridge, taking up all Saturday.

I haven't got on Malpas back this season over his job, but after yesterdays debacle they man has to go.  Im dissapointed to come to this conclusion but for the sake of this football club I feel he isnt the right man to steer the ship.

Cya on Wednesday.

I was expecting us to win yesterday but the result didn't actually surprise me (if that makes any sense?). For too long now our players (and I don't just mean the current bunch i'm going back a good 4 or 5 years with this) have never really given a toss in these type of games. None of them really care about the club (i guess that's football these days though) but what has been a common trend since the turn of the century continued yesterday.

I don't think there was much more Malpas could have done yesterday either. Sounds like we showed no fight, bottle or passion again. From a managers point of view you can only do so much. You can motivate them and tell them how you want them to play but that doesn't mean to say they will go out and do it. Some of our players have got themselves into a comfort zone i think. People like Aljofree, Macca and JPM who make the starting line up pretty much every week will pick up their wages regardless and therefore it makes no odds to them whatever the result. That's not to say they don't try though. Just that maybe they take it fro granted being pro footballers.

In summary i think we need a player shake up really. At times this season some of the players simply haven't been good enough. Yesterday was obviously another example of that. The manager must take some blame but to be fair to MM he's done all he can to try and turn it around recently and it worked until yesterday.

A - We'd have been a different ball number to histon
B - Why the hell would swindon - Leeds be a telly game?

a - fair enough
b - for the same reason Leeds - northampton was

Leeds against another league team wouldn't have been on telly imo. If leeds get a prem team in the third round then they'd be a shoe-in to be on telly, i think tv bosses would be wary about having them on 3 rounds in a row.

a - not if we drew with histon, we'd have been that number then.
b - agreed, no chance would they have put that on.
