Title: Sony Phone Repair
Post by: Sippo on Monday, June 15, 2015, 07:31:04
Dropped my phone this morning and now the bastard thing won't unlock. One mahoosive crack down the middle of the screen, with only one side interactive.

Any good suggestions on where to take to be repaired?

Wouldn't they be really expensive?

You said good and didn't mention anything about cost.

Just be aware of invalidating warranty and non-genuine parts from the cheapo phone repair shops if that stuff bothers you.

The warranty doesn't bother me to be honest. The bastard sim doesn't fit in my old phone either. Grrr.

What are the places in town like?

What a ball ache.

What model is it?

I've replaced a few broken screens. If warranty doesn't bother you, then DIY would probably be the cheapest option.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact.

Don't fancy a DIY tbh.

I'd ask Sony how much it will cost through their support website. It even has a bit for repairs. You won't get it done cheaper than £130 quid looking around.

Did you have a case on the phone? I've just got the same one and it looks like it would break easily if dropped.

No case.

Dropped on tile.

If it's a lot it'll be a home insurance jobby then.

Ouch. Assume you don't have much excess to pay?

Reading on up on Sony forums the cost from Sony doesn't seem too bad.

Not sure on excess yet, but will pop into town and ask how much they charge.

I've the exact same phone too. You need to get yourself a tempered glass screen protector, they've saved my phone a couple of times already.

It looks like you can get a replacement digitizer for £25, but then you'd probably have to use a heat gun to get it off the LCD. The whole assembly (LCD + digitizer) looks to be about £100.

My only concern about DIYing this phone would be the water tightness.

I've seen the DIY video, and don't fancy that.

Yeah, I just checked the ifixit teardown. It's all held together with glue rather than screws which makes it a lot more difficult and also a lot easier to break things :)

£50 excess on home insurance so not too bad. Until renewal comes up...

Then you renew elsewhere
