I was in London yesterday and drove into it. First time i've done it and was pretty pissed off because it was, well...congested. How long do you have to pay the stupid fine? Do you get 14 days or something like that?

Thought you had to get it on the day....or in advance - don't know if you can pay retrospectively. Also depends how far into london you drove, it doesn't apply in all areas

Pay on the day (online available). If you went into the zone and didn't pay you now owe at least £50. Ca-ching £££.

What happens if I forget to pay?
At midnight, images of all of the vehicles that have been in the congestion charging zone are checked against the vehicle registration numbers of vehicles which have paid their congestion charge for that day. The computer keeps the registration numbers of vehicles that should have paid but not done so. A Penalty Charge Notice will be issued to the registered keeper of the vehicle.

AND

Following a final check at midnight, the computer will keep the registration numbers of vehicles that should have paid but not done so. We will then manually check each recorded image and issue a Penalty Charge Notice of £100 to the registered keeper or hirer of all those vehicles. As with parking penalties, this will be reduced to £50 for prompt payment within 14 days. Failure to pay the penalty charge within 28 days will result in the penalty being increased to £150.

It's always congested, especially this time of year.  Took me two hours to get from the South Bank too the M4 the other day.

Batch is correct, there's a £50 fine in the post I'm afraid.

50 quid is a bit harsh. They should give you 24 hours or something like that to cough up the fiver in case people forget.

I got a fine a few months ago. I tried to blame dumb saying I was a 'country lad' and was unaware....didn't work though.    Oops
