Not sure if posted yet but a savage assessment from Joey Barton regarding one of their regular centre halves:

JB said today "Don’t forget I’ve known Max from when I was at QPR. He was training with us when he was 20 and the observations of him then haven’t changed much to the observations of the player I’ve found now.

"That is worrying in that period of time, seven, eight or nine years, if you’re still making the same mistakes.

"I think you can only help yourself. He can only help himself first and foremost before you can help any of your teammates."
"Captain when we came in, and I just don’t understand that," Barton said.

"How can that be the leader, the person you set out as the head of your organisation, as the head of your troops?

"He’s got a lot of work to do, the boy. We’ve got to build him back up and it’s not straightforward, and, as I say, I can only help people who want to help themselves.

"We’ve got no time for passengers, and as cruel as that may seem, unfortunately this is not a charity. This is an elite performing environment that is not elite performing at this moment in time and it’s my job to get it there, because I’m a custodian of the building.

That's some interesting man management. I have no idea who Max is and whether or not the criticism is justified, but hanging him out to dry in public like this sure as shit isn't going to help "build him back up". And it would be interesting to wonder what the effect on the rest of the team is - if Max is a bit of a waster that no-one likes, this might actually be quite an effective galvanising message for the rest of the squad. If he's a respected leader among the team, and the fact he was captain suggests that might be the case, possibly less so. Never quite sure what managers hope to achieve by publicly calling players out like this, always looks like a desperate "don't blame me" gambit from a failing leader.

I'd be well pissed off if our manager came out with that in public. Not even Sheridan has done that.

Though you may argue the subbing, stripping and dumping of our captain is worse.

Only difference being Barton will end up having actual fights with players.

Oh there will be fights, although I would say again, comparable.

Should know after the first 15 if that's missplaced or not.

I'm a bit nervous. A draw wouldn't be a knockout blow. Well a defeat wouldn't be either TBH.

Would take a point, but if we play for one, we'll lose.

The players voted him captain at the start of the season. High risk strategy for sure.
