I'm after some advice regarding squeaky bastard flooring. I think whoever the dick was who put the upstairs flooring down used nails, and probably incorrect ones Doh The flooring is a good thickness at 22mm but it's really irritating. I bought some Spax 60mm decent flooring screws to try and sort it. My question is can I just drive these screws in next to the original nails or do the nails need removing? Any help appreciated.

This is really going to fuck with the Big Smith "Samdy is 4D" conspiracy, because I need to do exactly the same thing when we move into our new place.

My intention is to take up the old nails using a small pry bar and then screw through the nail holes.

Can I assume your flooring is original planks rather than modern chipboard T&G? If so your primary concern, certainly in an older house (10 years or more) is where are the pipes and cables? Traditionally pipes and cables were chased along chiselled out notches on the top of the trusses. Many a house holder has come to grief driving a screw through a pipe or cable. Once you’re 100% sure you know where the obstacles are you can screw or nail. If you screw you may find some nails become a little proud where these new screws really tighten the pieces together, just use a nail punch to tap them down.

All though no guarantee the pipes and wires should have been put through bored holes in the joists. Another tip is when the CH is on you’ll have hotspots where the pipes run. Obviously the hot & cold water taps are still an obstacle to overcome. Plasplugs used to do a cable and pipe finder many moons ago. I’m sure you can get one online somewhere.

I'll probably pull some nails and reuse the holes, I do have a pipe and wire detector somewhere in the garage.
