Anyone got any experience of humanely stopping squirrels digging holes in their lawn?

Mowed yesterday after a 2 week hiatus and found about 10 holes.

Spent this morning rushing out onto the patio, shouting, kicking footballs at them.

Looking for something more sustainable and effective to do.

Any experience of what has worked for you?

Rats with tails.

Shoot them. I have shot over 150 in my garden in 5 years.
They are vermin and devastate song birds nests.

Kinda proves your shooting of them isn't working then. Evidence available that says squirrels eating bird eggs doesn't harm their numbers.

I have no gun.

I was thinking about an 'owl scarecrow' or a 'solar ultrasonic repellent' but reviews on both are mixed at best.

Domestic Cats by far the worst offender with songbirds numbers down.
Bird population around my house is thriving.
Cull Magpies, Crows and Squirrels......incredible numbers.
All nest boxes were taken up this year. Nuthatches, Great Tits and Blue Tits fledged. The Magpies will take the young birds thus always help them along.
BlackCaps, Chiffchaff nests around the garden intact.

Grey Squirrels rats with tails.

+1 get terrier

Also, I had a rat in my garden a few years ago, nothing worked to get rid of them (traps, poison) - so I bought an air rifle and had great fun shooting the bastard.  Since got a dog and never seen another rat/cat/squirrel in the garden.

And the bonus is, you have a dog!
