It’s damning indictment that two of our most expensive signings, ever, were fullbacks.  Worse than that was their complete lack of ability to match those price tags.  Robinson was OK but Drysdale was awful, and both of them not what you’d be wanting to spend more than a million on combined.

Robinson had been badly injured before we signed him and never got back to being the player he was beforehand. After he punched McGinley he said it was because he'd been tackled like that once before in his life, and it nearly ended his career.

We got 6-7 seasons out of Robbo and all but one of those was in the 2nd tier. Was more reliable than outstanding and followed Kerslake and Summerbee at right back.

Compared to other signings made at the time he seemed good value. Didn't we pay over £100K for Gary Elkins?

Beauchamp will always be on the list. The biggest regret about his signing is that Gorman backed out of signing Simon Barker from QPR when Beauchamp fell out of favour at West Ham.

Barker had done pre season with us and the type of midfielder we needed plus we let Adi Whitbread go who might have done OK a div lower after the Premier relegation season

2 in 1 year 1981.

Colin Barrett ex man City and Nottm Forest defender, scored in the European Cup vs Liverpool for Forest in the early rounds just the season before, came to us and was a bit shit and very injured.

David Peach came roughly the same time from Southampton for a then club record fee of £150,000. At that time the world record fee was just £1m.

He was an ex England squad member and played for England U21s and England B side and a great penalty taker of note.

Was utterly shocking for us.
1980 I think, not 81. Both signed using the money from our great cup runs that season. Peach was a disappointment, certainly, but stayed for a couple more seasons and wasn't that bad. Barrett was dreadfull though, as was evident immediately. I'd add Glenn Cockerill to those two, signed also during the 79/80 season as a replacement for Ray Mchale. He looked good in his first few games but never settled. Very disappointing because he was obviously a decent player, as he later demonstrated.

Based on nothing other than his name sounding like a really good footballers name, I was pretty excited about Milan Misun.

He might have been fantastic for us, who knows?

He is still playing in the Czech Republic, and still only 30! he must still have serious injury problems as he has only played under 150 games in his entire career.

From recent times - Jonny Goddard.   Young player who scored shit loads of quality goals from midfield in the conference but even in league 2 looked poor.

Most of that team were shit mind.  Tough to pick one out!
