Can anyone explain what the point of this is? How does it work. What is it for? Genuine question.

Mrs Audrey has decided that apart from AirBNB she wants to put our little rental cottage on Instagram.

I’ve had a look and it seems full of people you don’t know posting more pics of other people you don’t know.

She’s trying to get her head round wtf hashtags are used for.

There's not much point unless you're an 'influencer' (someone who posts pics of themselves in a brands clothing and usually paid), a brand ambassador (as above but not 'famous' and mostly unpaid but get to keep the stuff), photographers, designers, artists.

There is an angle that may work but it would require a collaboration. I don't think you're too fussed though. However you could get a photographer to take some pics, then get them to do a piece that features your holiday let (telling everyone how fabulous it is). They tag your insta page and by a form of online 'word of mouth' people get directed to your insta page.

Hashtags ### - They just work as a kind of metatag. The idea is if you type a hashtag in to search for then it produces all the posts where that tag appears. So when using them, make them simple and popular. For yourselves something like #Holiday #Greece #Sun #TravelGreece #GreekRetreat would be a good starter.

Just be sure to include your website, external link or an email because insta is so throwaway. You might get lots showing "love" (tapping the heart) to your post but then it's gone. You have to be constantly promoting everything around it. That's limited with a property (you can't be changing the decor every month like a clothing brand can change styles), so you then become a kind of Tourist Information Service. Essentially your aim is to get them off insta and talking to you about your product/sevice.

In all honesty, it might be more effort than it's worth. A holiday let should sell itself on AirBnB/HomeAway/OwnersDirect etc. All insta will do is showcase the property but it's already doing that on the other platforms.

In a nutshell, on the non-business side.

Never used it; not my cup of tea.

But it can be useful for marketing, or so I'm lead to believe.* At I guess, I'd say that hashtags probably work similar to keywords.

*Having said that --- I work in internet marketing and it barely gets a mention, so it can't be all that great

I use it to post pictures of my dog and put STFC related things on my story. That's about it really. It's social media without most of the vitriol you get on Facebonk or Twatter.

Cannot really understand what is the difference between Insta and Twitter?

In so far as if you have one what benefit does having the other bring?

As Tails said, bile mainly. Kids seem to use Insta more for communicating with their peer groups, along with group chats etc, on casual observation? Seems like Insta is more of a (self)promotion thing, hence why it's seen as important for marketing I guess

Yep. Except if there are any benefits, they're beneficial to much more established brands. A lot of photographers use it as a form of "portfolio" but insta really is just an intermediary or an advert. Everything is designed to direct the user to your product/service.

It's massive for clothing brands when launching a campaign or new range though

It's good for following bands, comedians and both of my best pals live abroad so I enjoy keeping up with their lives.

I have an LSP account to promote episodes and I have a personal account which is full of inane shite and an assorted collection of pretty pictures from the Bratton Camp/Westbury White Horse Hill.

Essential for businesses, especially in hospitality.

Take a pic of the outside of the cottage, the gardens, some flowers on a table, fireplace etc, and get the tags right and it can bring in lots of business.

Kinda what I said but there's more to it than that. They've gotta be prepared to keep adding fresh content to it. The dynamic is different a traditional add. Things go stale quick in that environment. Insta stories is probably a good angle to so flash sales and discount codes but everything has to be continually fluid. Also remember a property is limited to a number of weeks in a year (36 letting weeks on average) so there is only a maximum amount of business you need to attract per year.
