Apparently (contrary to the impression often given by the press), English U21 players are getting more Premier League game time than at any time in the last 12 years, and (again, despite what you might read in the press) more than double the corresponding amount of playing time in both Spain and Germany:

The quality of young English players has improved over the last few years.... to some extent academies and coaching have helped, but a lot of talent has come from a smallish area of South London. This is the modern day equivalent of the sort of rough working class areas that threw up talent in the 50's.

It was interesting hearing Chris Boyd rant recently on the state of Scottish football, on how north of the border it has become a middle class game, and thus no longer producing hard hungry players.

No doubt if Chelsea continue to set a trend this season others may follow.... when we beat their U23's under Luke, they had Tomori and Mount in their side.

As to whether this current talent can do anything in a future WC has to be debatable, as for whatever reason we still can't produce proper ball playing midfielders in numbers, a sort of reverse Spain, who still do but can't find a forward.

Foden is the great hope, but he hasn't yet played enough, to tell

And looking at the stats in the article, he's not likely to unless he leaves or goes out on loan. Man City are one of the worst at giving game time to their young players, just 10 minutes this season. For Foden.

Sancho was there and had to get stroppy to seal a move to Germany to get game time... Foden might need to do similar, unless they have told him his time comes when David Silva leaves in the summer?

I think that's the assumption being made by the pundits, have heard that said a few times. Incidentally, something I didn't pick up on in the original story, is that while we're doing better than Italy, Germany and Spain, we're half as good as France where homegrown U21s have made up over 10% of played time this season. The BBC commissioned the research and their report on it is here:

This is where France has the edge, because the domestic league is relatively weak and beyond PSG doesn't have financial clout, it can focus on youth development.

To play devil's advocate, the figures would look quite different if Chelsea didn't have a transfer embargo or had hired anyone other than Lampard... Arguably Mount, Abraham and Tomouri wouldn't have been given the chance. Still, good to see them taking their opportunity and pushing their way into the England set up.

He's only 19, but next season will be crucial for Foden. Either he gets a regular spot in the team or he needs to move on. Almost every other PL club would have him playing week in week out.

Arsenal had a couple of lads in last night, Joe Willock, who looks steady and Bukayo Saka, who I first saw a few weeks back in the Europa at Frankfurt and he looked special.  Difficult to tell just how good he might become, as it's now about what's between the ears, and where he plays position wise.
