Happy 50th Anniversary STFC.

In 1969
On league cup final day
the Arsenal went to Wembley
They walked the Wembley Way
They thought they'd have it easy
They thought they'd win/won the cup
Along came Swindon Town FC and fucked the bastards up...

I'm surprised that the Town faithful have never sang "Danny Boy" around the ground in tribute to the great man? Maybe they have but never heard about it/missed it. How fitting would it be if all sides of the County Ground, on Saturday rattled out an eerie yet poignant tribute to a great manager, who sadly cannot be here today. Maybe it's a song we could make "our own" and promise to sing until we win the League Cup again (insert chortle)...

Now many of you will say "but it's an 'Irish' song." or a 'plastic Irish' one. However Danny Boy is more closely associated to us than many think. Its 100% an English tune, and from Zummmerzet to boot.

Anyhoo just a thought.  Hmmm

Although I was 14 when I went to Wembley I can remember very little about the day. Maybe the trip down the A4 - pre motorway days - and my mate getting hauled down the steps by some disgruntled Gooners during the presentation of the Cup.

Feel sorry for those who never got to see The Don in all his pomp.

When was this song made up? I had a hiatus from watching Town live, and when I returned sometime in the 21st century those darned pesky yoof had dreamt it up. Who is responsible and when?

Bit  of a late shout due to my computer being rebuilt as it fell over but good friend of my son called Martyn Kent  writes for the i paper and has an article on the League Cup Final and an interview with the Don. I could not buy the paper locally but it is on the web as well.

Ah, January 2010 when took 6,000 fans there. Someone must have written it deliberately. I can't imagine that song growing organically during a game.

Good article. Reminds me that the campaign to get to Wembley was as amazing as the final result itself. Even more amazing, the playing time to get there may be a world record for a cup competition.

Started off in the pub I was in. Not sure if it had spread from others before. That 6000 figure has always irritated me, as that was the away end capacity. We filled the Neutral fans bit as well which didn't count on the away following. There were another 1500/2000 in there with us,

That league cup song has been around at least since I started watching in the mid-2000’s

Mostly anti Pox songs in the pub we were in. Fun day out, the Met had their camcorders out too  Smiley
