As this is a university city some of the smart ones on here may have been there. Or anyone who has knowledge of Exeter. Anyone give some insight into going out in the day and evening in the city? Places to go/avoid?

I visit Exeter regularly, nice city but I don't go out drinking there just the occassional family meal, almost every one of the places mentioned in that thread have shut or changed hands. Some good eateries but most are just chains the same as you get in Swindon. Constanza spent a few years there at Uni IIRC he could be one to ask. |

Is there such a thing, all the ones up here sell barely in date generic beer, badly stored and are full of old men getting pissed at 11am? |

Corrected for you.  To be fair, Wetherspoons do a decent job in rescuing some nice buildings and putting them to good use. The Crosse Keys in London is a prime example. The George's Meeting House in Exeter is a former Unitarian chapel, perfect for some spiritual uplift. |

If you like that sort of thing, the underground passages are quite interesting.
The night life is pretty dire down here, the Cavern is not bad for indie rock music but check the website as to what is on first.
If you like Moroccan style food Al-Farid by the Cathedral is good.
The quayside has a few restaurants/bars
A trip a little further afield to Exmouth or Topsham is a nice way to spend an hour or so

Just head for the city centre and wander about. Loads of good pubs and restaurants. I recommend Hubbox for food. Their burgers are awesome.

Must admit I didn't overly rate Hubbox when we went there for my 50th birthday, Urban Burger a bit further out serves much better burger IMO. Hubbox smoked slow cooked brisket though is very good. |
