.. if your cab is more than a mile or so from the exchange, don't touch BT FTTC with a bargepole.

[pedant]
It really doesn't matter how far the cabinet is to the exchange, unless the speed of light isn't quick enough for you Smiley
[/pedant]

Copper distance/quality from your house to the cabinet on the other hand..
Oh and congestion...

Lovely. Everyone likes a smug twat Smiley

Not being smug at all, smug is being on Virgin and telling everyone you are getting 100 / 150 / 200 speeds.

distance to the exchange makes little distance now, as Batch said it's more to do with the line to the house and the equipment in your house

OK, was told by one of the many engineers that came out that our cabinet was too far from the exchange. But then given that everyone from BT/OpenReach lied and lied again over the course of two months of failing to fix the issue, I'm happy to accept that was one of many things we were told that wasn't true. Terrible terrible service, only thing worse was the "support".

Used to have 100mb, went down to 50mb when I moved. It's plenty fast enough.

I have a cheapo 8mb adsl line at home with plusnet. Surprisingly not that bad at all. The cashback on top basically made it £80 for the year, albeit paid upfront. We watch Netflix every night pretty much and I use a VPN to remote to work if I'm ill and barring the usual Saturday night slowdown it's been more than acceptable. Plus net's customer support are spot on too. Probably the best isp out of a bad bunch.
