Maybe that's the biggest thing that is wrong with politics in this country. No wonder so many people are apathetic, it's no wonder when the general belief is that most politicians are self serving scumbags with no real ideals of their own.
Summed up perfectly.

...and with it (due to poor alignment), a decline in the importance of counties.

Much prefer the French and American systems which align postcodes with départements and states respectively.  Our system is muddled by comparison.

It was the Tories under Heath, who butchered the counties.

Am I the only one who doesn`t actually like Jeremy Corbyn - reading this thread I reckon so but thought I would ask...the man had nothing to lose - offered us the solution to all our problems in one fell stroke ( well a few ) - an utopia dreamt up by cleverer than the Tories marketing department...we are turning into a nation of selfish souls and Corbyn tapes into it perfectly....sooner we get our minds around means testing the better - the gap between rich and poor is too wide - so those who can afford to do without things like winter allowances and free prescriptions should do so...why isn`t this an acceptable option - why can`t those who can afford to contribute to the NHS do so...I have to pay for my dentist, I don`t need free prescriptions or a winter fuel allowance thank you...honestly in politics just doesn`t pay off - offering free tuition just helps those who can afford it but fuck me does it get the votes in - well done Jeremy...I have voted for all three parties over the years, before anyone says `Tory .anker or worse - Corbyn isn`t the answer in my book....its a sad state of affairs and as always real honestly has gone out for a walk...sad times we live in...

Fuck me, she's a politician. What do you expect. The only one I've had any time for was Tony Benn - never wavered in what he believed in no matter how madcap some of them were.

Being in opposition means you can spout all sorts of nonsense.

You must like JC for the same reasons then?

Means testing is expensive and no one actually knows how expensive because it is expensive just to check! The likelihood is that means testing all pensioners would be more expensive than just giving them all free TV licenses, winter fuel allowance and a bus pass. A good way of handling it would be to make all these benefits available only to those that apply for them. Yes, some people who didn't need them would apply but some probably won't.

Nobody can disagree with his principles - just the means to deliver them. I'm non political and have a healthy distaste for the lot of them.

I expect some level of competence, May doesn't even have that.

Are you old enough to be eligible?  If don't wish to receive these benefits, then you could donate the savings you make to a charity.

How depressing is this - there has to be a way to get people who can afford to pay to cough up and how about the £ 800 million in missed NHS appointments a year - needs to be change - Corbyn may well be a man of principles ( ffs ) easy when you are sitting on the back bench not agreeing with anything any government proposes - do we really honestly believe he would change the world....??

I assume you don't mind people who need these benefits receiving them?  So maybe Jayo's suggestion that you have to apply has some merit.  After all you don't receive a bus pass, unless you apply. I guess you haven't.

I honestly do not mind those people who really do need it being looked after - but I really do not like those who play the system and there are a number out there....why can`t some common sense come to play - man will always be greedy - the benefit system needs to be reviewed but to mention that is seen a heinous crime - we live in a culture of expecting something for nothing and don`t really appreciate actually how well off we are in general terms - I think Corbyn is well meaning in his principles but not a man who could govern realistically - unfortunately you cannot keep all the people happy all of the time....the division needs to be narrowed by all of us not - and no I don`t claim a bus pass Reg...

So your gripe is more with the benefits system as a whole, rather than specific age related examples?

There's a school of thought, currently being tested in places like Finland, that as automation increasingly replaces jobs and many jobs are ZHC...the benefits system could be scrapped by giving everyone a universal wage.

Agree with this, the term 'poverty' was banded around a lot during the election campaign and when you compare it to real poverty in third world countries it's just an over dramatic term here. Most housing association and sheltered housing properties  near me have sky, cars, countless dogs that get their vets fees paid for by the PDSA and a lot of people see it as their right rather than a privilege to have these luxuries.  I have a real issue with tax payers income tax and NI contributions paying for things like dogs (I don't mean guide dogs) as it just isn't where the money should be allowed to go.
You can almost spin Corbyn's "for the many not the few" catchphrase to he wants "the few to pay for the many". This is not a solution to the countries issues either, it shouldn't be put on a minority to bail out the lower echelons of society as yes maybe they can afford to pay even more in tax but there is a limit.
There's no easy solution to find a balance and we seem to be stuck with austerity from one party and socialism at the other with no reasonable middle ground. The wastage in the public sector and from people who play the benefits system is astronomical and would probably eliminate the need for austerity and then some but parties only dabble in reforms as it will impact jobs and may upset some people which they don't like doing as it may lose them elections.
Theresa May is arguably the worst PM we have ever had yet she still won an election (ok no majority) and that's a right sad state of affairs.

I say scrap the whole benefits and tax free earnings system and implement Universal Basic Income. Hard to feel hard done by when everyone gets the exact same benefits. It also solves the problem of people on benefits not being able to take a job without losing their benefits, so even single days of work become easier and more profitable.
