O*fordshire is a loathsome construct of the 74 county reorganisation, when the Tories allowed it to steal lumps of historic Berkshire including the birthplace of Alfred the Great and abutt itself onto Wiltshire. A heinous crime.

Berkshire could be considered to have been the traditional eastern extent of Wessex, although other areas were brought in through the Saxon period by aggressive expansion.

What constitutes the ancient kingdom of Wessex has thus been flexible.

So Hardy has Christminster in Wessex in Jude the Obscure.

Happily the scum have crossed the 420 border winless to this day.

Completely agree, Reg (for once) ;-)

I was a Berkshire lad in '74 and was mighty pissed off when half the county was given to O*fordshire as a freebie. Oh okay, the "Berkshire Downs" aren't any more then, eh? The Uffington White Horse, Faringdon, Abingdon, Didcot and Wantage suddenly turned into a foreign place for me. Grrr. Absolute bollocks. Traditional party then, The Tories?

A very good point...I wonder why not? I was always pleased to live in "The Royal County" - not that it meant Jack Shit really. I guess that perhaps the grown ups (I was only 14 at the time) were lured by talk of cheaper rates or by promises of low cost bus fares to O*ford or some such crap...

Oxfordshire is great, apart from it's football team

I've lived here all my life and think it's one of the safest places in Britain.

Excuse me for being really thick, but I didn't know this before. But did Oxfordshire not exist before 1974 then?

And if that's the case, Avon i presume was another 'County" made up and I thought that's got rid of now so couldn't they do the same with Oxfordshire.

Oxon allways existed but was much smaller pre 1974.

Berkshire was a much bigger county but we stole half of it  Cheesy
