I am so rubbish with computers, thanks in advance if you can offer any advice.

I tried to turn my laptop on as normal today and got this message:

An operating system wasn’t found. Try disconnecting any drives that don’t contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Most of the stuff I found on google suggested booting from a disc and using the command line but it's not having that, just comes up with the same message.

Buy a new one and just bung it in?

Pretty much. You'll need an OS on it as well.

Just try reseating the drive first. And check if it works if you remove all USB devices and any disks in the cd drive

Scrap it and sell it to webuyanycomp for 3 humbugs and a packet of Haribo.

On an aside...the Hard Drive may well not be fucked, it may just have corrupted the boot files, an easy fix with a boot usb/Windows install CD. Never assume it "is definately the HDD broken" because it often isn't.

Alternatively it could be the disk is fucked in which case you buy a new one, fit it (2 min job) and install Windows on it from usb(30 mins)/CD-DVD(1 hour) with the serial number you already have.

Thanks guys Smiley I do appreciate all your help.
It probably is the hard drive as it was a bit wobbly last time I got someone to look at it.

It takes 2 drives so it wouldn't do me any harm to buy one anyway.

I don't know what that means really! I've got an .ISO of Windows 7, will that work?

Yeah that's the OS, but not a task for someone unfamiliar with installing from fresh. Get a savvy relative to spend their time doing it Smiley
